Won't start

Hi Folks,

I need your help.

I took all the tins off my 99 Standard several months ago and sent them to paint. The bike has been in my heated garage and on a motorcycle jack. When I got the tins back(this week) I reconnected all the wires to the rear end, completely reassembled the bike and now it won't turn over. All the lights come on as should. THe headlight goes out when I press the starter button but not a sound. (Kill switch is not on).

I have a brand new battery. (I think the old battery was fine because it did the same thing with it in the bike). I have taken apart the starter button and cleaned it up. I have checked all the fuses that I could find. I have since gone back and checked all connections on the wires that I had previously hooked up. I have checked the batttery ground. I'm not sure where to go from here.

All suggestions welcome and appreciated.

I would try to jump the starter relay. The relay may have frozen up. Good Luck I am sure more will chime in soon!

First, jumper from a known functional battery (vehicle not running).

I'd check the interlocks. Is it in neutral, clutch in and kickstand up?
Damn thing gives me the grins every time I get on it!

Including the center cover  :roll: ?

When I took my center cover off, I put the tip-over sensor back on upside down.
So I had to take the center cover off again, and put the tip-over sensor on right.

Well crud Mike. I did take the center cover off. Which way is the sensor supposed to be sitting? If it is installed correctly is the flat side up or the rounded side?

Move the ground strap off the aluminum engine block, to the steel frame.  And add a ground strap between engine and frame.  This is something that will likely cause a problem for you if it hasn't already.

Been there, done that, so simple but so embarassing!  Good catch hubcapsc. Hoser  ;D

Well...I am a bit embarrassed to say but I installed the bank angle sensor upside down.

She is up and running Thanks to all your help especially Hubcapsc for figuring it out early.

Unbelievable what one can learn by reading various threads!   :o   Who would guess it was an upside down bank angle sensor and it would cause so much havoc? Great call hubcapsc!  :cooldude:

I have an occasional problem with starting on my Interstate.
I have traced the problem to the switch that connects the gear lever while in neutral to the starter / switch.
When in neutral the instrument light shows I am in neutral and it SOMETIMES requires the gear lever to be jiggled to get contact and start the bike.
While I am living with it at the moment I would like to fix it once and for all.
I need help in identifying the location of the wiring switch.
To either clean it up or replace it.
Can anyone advise where to look.

Everynow and then my bike's neutral light comes on when it is not really in
neutral... so I mash the starter button and the bike starts rolling  :o One day you'll
read in my obituary about how I knocked down all the Valkyries at Inzane like
a line of dominoes...

That particular switch is inside the motor, behind the cover on the front of the motor.
