:uglystupid2: I've got my carb sync so screwed up I don't know if I'll be able to get it fixed or not. Is there an initial setting..turns out etc. I can start from?  The bike was, I repeat was, running fair with a little lope (miss) at idle and up to 1800 rpm after that was fine. I'd ran carb cleaner and seafoam through the tank 5 or 6 tankfulls and still had the lope. So....I decided to adjust thus mis-adjust the sync. by ear ( I think I'm deaf) and now it seems beyond help. Any suggestions? I'm not sure I want to take it to the dealership, kinda feel like they may try to sell me a $1000 carb overhall or worse. Anybody in the south Miss. area with a set of gauges and the know how that can help?

make sure that the adjustment tabs are moving when you turn the screws. I've worked a bunch of Valks and sometimes when you screw in on the screw then back it out the 2 shafts are stuck in place.

You can't mess with #3.  Get a set of vacuum gauges and the service manual on line and follow the procedures.   Set them all to #3 and your all set.

Hopefully, someone in your area will step up.

Good luck.

I am sure others will chime in...but, let me beat the dead horse first, and if I have missed a post somewhere stating you have already done the basics, I apologize.

Be sure your vacuum caps and hoses are in good shape.  Also, check o-rings under the intakes.  They are bad about leaking after a few years.  Tighten the clamps on the carbs.  If you haven't replaced the o-rings under the intakes, they are not hard.   If you have vacuum probs, a sync is a waste of time.

A set of vacuum guages is a must for good synchronization.  You haven't ruined anything, just need to start at the baseline #3 carb and go from there.  Maintain engine rpms while syncing, proper cooling to keep the fans from coming on etc..

There are some write ups in the tech section of the f6rider board that may help.  And of course, the wealth of knowledge and opinions posted here will broaden your sense of knowing and well being!   ;D

Maybe someone is close enough to help you out.

Good luck!

You can set the carburetors mechanically with a little work.

The end of a drill bit makes a good gauge to use for the job.

Have to remove the air box in order to access the butterfly in the carburetors.

Set all the carburetors to match #3 carburetor.

Whenever attempting to synchronize the carburetors, a thorough lubrication of all the linkage is recommended.

There were some recent posts about this.. A lot has been written on this over the years.. As you found out, ears won't work.. I use a simple single vacuum gauge that works just fine as well as fast and easy..

:) Thanks to all that offered suggestions and direction to get my problem resolved. I went to the shop talk area and made a modified version of Ross Spoonland's sync gage setup. I used a secound gage on #3 so I would have a constant reference point and used a water mister manifold from Lowes to set up a collector for the other 5 clys. with a gage on top and cut-off valves to isolate each cylinder. All worked out great and the ole valk is running better than ever. I learned my lesson, no more ear tunes!

Can you send some pics of your setup.  I'm thinking of doing the same.
