Well, my alternator finally took a dump on me tonight.

Was out on a ride (full moon ride) and was about 6 miles from home and the Kury volt meter was blinking red for a couple of miles and she finally died.
Lyn-Del came and rescued us with truck and trailer.  Only second ride in a trailer that I know of.

I have a spare, but will probably go the Wing route and have these 2 rebuilt as spares.

Wish me luck with the R and R.

Thanks to Lyn-Del for the rescue.  The VRCC IS like a big ole family.

tough break, but good to have those who can help when you're in a bind  :cooldude:

I heard Rocketman is a pro at the R/R of these. I'm sure he'ld love to come change yours for you. I did the goldwing replacement about 50K ago and have had very good service from it. Just a thought get new rubber dampers for the new one too. It makes it alot easier to stab in there.

Timing will be tricky, but I'll give you a call.

I am going to give it a shot and if I get in a bind, Mark I'll hollar for help.  Going to order the Wing alt. and dampeners today.
Any quick tips like putting painters tape on the center cover to keep scratches away?

Thanks in advance.

I always take the center cover off.  It's a pain, but it's easier than struggling with it on.  Have a long screwdriver for removal/reinstall of the tip switch.  The triangle on the tip switch points down for some inane reason.  Make sure it's on right.  Make sure the tab fits properly into the rubber grommet at the base of the center cover when you put it back in.
Also, try to line up the fins and dampers by hand before putting it in.  THe dampers are eight pieces, but are attached together in pairs to make only four pieces.  IF the "bands" that connect the pairs are broken, especially at the top, that will make life much more difficult.  If only one or two are broken, move them around so that they're on the bottom, and gravity will hold them in place, rather than at the top, where gravity will pull them away from their proper place.
Make sure it's rotated properly and all set when you put it in.  You don't want to do this twice if you don't have to.

There are a few others, but these are the highlights.

I have never removed the center cover to change the alt. Different strokes for different folks. I just remember to disconnect the battery first or you'll get to buy a new 55 amp fuse too. Don't ask me how I know. I remove the alt. cover and the three bolts and the noise sup. from the alt. and roll the unit to get to the large wire and the other wire and with  a beer or two, the right words, kicking and screaming it just falls out in it's own time. Replacement is in the reverse order with the beers and  right words plus kicking and screaming moved to the front.

Are the quantity of beers and the volume of words and screams directly proportional   :D

I've done it without removing the center cover as well.  However, I find it's easier to do it without the center cover in place, and easier enough to make it worthwhile the pain of removing the center cover.

I know when wizard changed mine, he said that replacing the center cover took longer than putting the alternator did (but was well worth the trouble).

I think you have to be (a rocket scientist or rocket engineer) to install one. No pun intended.

Sorry, been busy getting my game plan together and ordering parts.
87,625 as of right now.  Just checked.  Looks like I am going to need a battery too.  It's been charging all night and all day on 2amp setting and is still about 12.3 V.  :(

Jimmy,
You may not need a alternator if the battery is bad. Maybe you already have tested the alternator with a good battery?

Battery was new last November.....I suppose it "could" be bad though...  Honda dealer installed it when they were repairing the rear-ender damage.  It wasn't cheap either...

My alternator went out at around 50,000 miles.    It was my doings that caused it.    I accidently left the lights on and battery ran down before I noticed it.   I was in a hurry and hit the battery with my charger on the 200amp quick start mode.    Didn't get far till I noticed the alternator wasn't working.      It was a stupid thing I did, so learn from my mistake.

blotar

thanks Houdini,
that's going to be perfect someday. Brand New $147.00 - sounds like a deal. Although I did not shop around. It just sounds like a good price.
thanks again,
