I'm going to be doing a trip 2-up with my spare wife next week(my wife doesnt ride and I do. MY buddies wife likes to ride and he won't).  We've made a few practice runs as I've not done any 2up on a streetbike till last weekend.  All  my prior experience is on dirt bikes/dual sports.  Any tips?

No its all good. We've all known each other for over 10years. WE spend as much time with our legal spouses as we both do our "spares" .  More like my sister than my wife.

Cruising  two up is not a big problem , Just make sure your passenger knows to wait for your signal before mounting or dismounting the bike, It saves those embarrassing parking lot stories.

Your passenger has as much control over the bike as you do, maybe more.  Make sure she plants her ass where she is comfortable and just leans with the bike, not you.  Stopping is an issue with the added weight, so plan accordingly.  If she has to move around to get comfortable again, make sure she lets you know in advance so you can prepare for it.   Don't let her get on or off (the bike) without your telling her it's ok.

So, what does her hubby and your wife have planned... ??

I did 2up alot in my dual sport days, and shes rode 2up for years, So this is by no means our first rodeo,  ahd she has ridden 2up with me on the Dual sport.  As for the plans for my wife and her husband....Maybe ignorance is bliss....

Keep saying that to your wife and maybe she'll keep believing it....for a little while longer....

Ok, on the serious side...If set on doing this I'd suggest before you just head out that you take some quality time practicing with your rider on the back.  Find a large parking area and practice just like you would if you were working to hone your individual riding skills; stops, starts, figure 8's. You may need to adjust your shock sag, the bike will handle different.  Practice communicating, and be sure your rider understands your expectations when it comes to cornering, getting on and off the bike.  Comfort will could be an issue, appropriate gear for the weather.

my wife has a friend who has ridden with me many times when Bonnie cant ride

She is a good passenger except she wont stop talking

I NEVER USE the intercom when I am with her, I can hear her over the stereo at any speed

She has a boyfriend now, but he dont ride    Apparently he has hearing difficulties so a match made in heaven for them

This gal may go for her license as I am not available for rides since I have the 1 seat beemer and I ride that most of the winter

Long as you Dont crap where you eat young pup and keep it clean like you have it and you will always have a passenger ifn you want one

With a passenger I think it's more important to get off the front brake during the last couple of feet when coming to a stop and to keep your forks straight when stopping. Don't misunderstand me, I don't mean in a "panic stop" but just during a normal stop staying off the front brake the last foot or two before you drop your foot will help you avoid awkward stops.

Some say incest is best... ;D  And ignorance can be bliss... ;D  On the serious note, all good tips here.  Especially the communication between rider and passenger.  Stay on the same page in all circumstances.

A simple technique geared for success is.... do not have her get on and off just anywhere, but at the easiest locations (for her and you).  For instance, when entering a gas station, have her get off away from the pumps in a level spot, gas it alone, drive away from the pump to a level spot aiming to your exit, then have her get on.  If backing out downhill from a front-in parking spot,  point to the spot where you want her to get on (near your exit).

You tap her leg when she is to get off, she taps your shoulder when she is ready to go.

Tell her to sit neutrally and never put her foot down at any time (unless you are falling over).  She is to become part of the bike, and you do all the driving, alone.

The proper technique for getting on is for her to put her left hand on your shoulder and right hand on the sissy, left foot on passenger's footrest, then step up and right leg thru to a seated position. Reverse to get off.

If she is wearing a half helmet, note that her elevated position often sticks her head directly in the wind/bugs above the windshield protection.  A snap on visor is often helpful.

She can put her hands anywhere she is comfortable...... except your lap is not a proper handhold.

Young Pup, what you do is your business but I have seen a bad result in a similar situation. I worked with two guys that tried that same thing only it was fishing instead of motorcycling. Spent lots of time with each other mates and thought it was really cool. Used the "she's more like a sister line" and all was good for about three years. I'll skip all the details but the end of the story was one man and one woman dead and one man to prison for life with no chance of parole. Good Luck.

Alien

Dude...this can't possibly be a good idea.

Flashmac

On my first ride with my wife she asked which way she needed to lean when we turned. I told her to lean straight back against the back rest and I would handle the driving. That is what she does now and I never even know that I have a passenger now.

Besides the longer distances to stop and slightly harder slow speed maneuvering, make sure she doesn't squirm around too much while cruising down the road, it can upset your balance enough so that if you are not haning on tight, it could make you wipe out.   Also, make sure as others say to let her know when you are ready to steady the bike so she can get on and off.  When fully loaded down all 3 I/S bags, me being 275 and wife 200, stops can be a little too top heavy and make sure your feet are squarely planted while stopping and DO NOT stop on those painted white lines in the crosswalk, they are slippery with shoes on for some reason.

Also, no one mentioned insurance.  Make darn sure you are fully insured if you are carrying passengers outside your family and they are covered in case of accident for medical expenses, etc.  I do NOT have coverage for medical expenses on my cycle at all since I ONLY take my immediate family on my cycle which is covered thru my work's health insurance plan.  If you do not have insured coverage for passengers outside of immediate family, do NOT take the friend's wife on since you could end up being in the poor house out of your own pocket if an accident happens.

Tonyfan, You are a thinking man!  :2funny: The incident was over thirty years ago and we were all a whole lot younger. Don't know what happened to her but she may be old and wrinkled now (LOL).

I've told my wife to try and become part of the bike, no leaning, just sit up straight and hang on tight. I lean her with the bike, no flopping around, no sudden moves, no waving her arms about and no hitting me in the back of the head when she wants to pull over for something. And don't ever pull on my arm to get my attention again !

You all are kinda busting his balls over another woman riding with him? No one knows their situation like him and his wife knows. My partner and I are close and Kit knows it. I tell Kit everything. She is ok with me giving my partner a ride and stuff. I even let me go shop with her a few months ago and I bought her a VS gift card for her b-day.

YoungPup, I just want to offer a little experiential observation that may be contrary to what you've been given.

First, the advice about coordinating with your rider for dismount and mount is very good.  that's the time the passenger can most impact you balance on the bike.  I prefer to have my rider put her hand on my shoulder and one foot on the passenger peg to mount pretty similar to how one would mount a horse.  this is done with me holding the bike upright (off the side stand) and the front brake held.

Beyond that moment. I disagree with some of the advice about having the passenger be careful of how she moves on the pillion.  The Valkyrie weighs in excess of seven hundred pounds, approaching a half ton with you added.  Unless your passenger is very heavy, she could dance back there and you'd hardly even know it.

Marital advice (unsolicited) -  Alone time with any female who is not your wife is a risk to your marital relationship.  The closer the friend, the greater the risk.  That doesn't mean it will destroy your marriage.  It just means that you need to be aware of the situation and the risk and place appropriate boundaries.  It seems some of our readers are assuming that you're going off on a trip alone with another man's wife and your own spouse is staying home.  I would rather guess that the two couples are taking a trip together with his wife on the bike and yours in the cage.

cookiedough

Don't know about the dancing behind by the passenger part.  My wife is no lightweight pushing 200 lbs. and if she moves back and forth it does throw me off kilter a little and I don't like that, especially if loaded down all 3 I/S bags.  The Valkyrie's are very balanced and although near 800lbs., any movement while riding does alter my balance some but not to the point of fearing to lose my balance, only a few times at stop signs on uneven ground with wife and loaded down does get tipsy though.

IMHO, the ONLY way a passenger on MY bike leans, is INTO me and 'tho they do not have to hold their feet up off the pegs, they are not to consiously press down (to shift seat position) as that foot peg is tied directly to the handle bar and WILL move it left or right!! They CAN shift around - IF they keep it from transfering to the peg....try it and you will see what I mean.
