alternater dampers

My alternater died, and I am installing a new one.  I can't get it to go in to go in the dampers.
The dampers were bridge out and over the fins on the engine side when I took the old alt. out. I'am not shure thats how the dampers should go. I had an Indy hack install brushes about 60k ago amd I am not shure he installed the dampers right. What is the best way to get the alternator into the dampers. I don't have a clear picture of how the dampers should go in the downloaded service manual.  Thanks

Put some oil on tbe dampers to hold them in place.
eyeball how the fins need to line up with the dampers.
put the alt in and pray to god the fins do not turn.
had mine in and out twice in about 15 minutes each time.
just be patient...

It's a pain in the ass it's a guessing game to get the fins to line up.  if it doesn't go in you gotta keep rotating the fins until WALA .  dampers ca n only go in one way as far as I know. Alternators suck...

Jruby38-consider this your baptism of fire. All of us that have changed out our altenators have wondered the same thing-just exactly W T F was Honda thinkin when they designed this?? And the main wire to the altenator goes on after the alt is in. Not that this will make your day any better but i understand the starter is way more funner. Hang in there-learn a few new curse words-and welcome to the proud brotherhood of  Valkyrie ownership. RIDE SAFE.

Got a brand new one delivered yesterday...Last two big rides I was on two alternator's left the rider on the side of the road     I'm pulling my working 80,000 mile alternator and putting a new one in and having the old one re-built to carry with me on road trips....Not looking forward to the install I've seen ( 3 ) being installed and its a bitch

I amgood to go. Local dealer hooked me up with a new goldwing alt. for $230 +tax was $243 total. What a bitch to get back in and line up with the dampers.  14.4 v on meter now.  Only issue is another piece of cheep Jap plastic chrome bites the dust. Top tap on alt cove broke on take off. It was all starting to peel anyway.  It will match the broken tabs on my chrome side covers and the peeling rear brake cover.  I have more epoxy, archery plastic glue, and gorilla tape holding this crap together than you can imagine.  Only nice chrome are the valve covers and some HD pling I made to fit.

From what I've seen it's all in how you hold your mouth when installing....I'll get it in as I plan on ridin' this bike to InZane. Putting in a new battery as well and installing the removed one in my 450 Foreman.

I removed my alternator today......took 5 minutes, it took longer because I couldnt bend my back so I had leverage problems.  The secret is either remove the center panel, or as I did just remove the two mounting bolts so it can move around...gives you JUST the space you need

Joe Im so stir crazy right now.....if my Dr told me I could ride without causing any damage Id ride up there and change your alternator for you.  This house arrest stuff is for the birds.  The good news is....I should be right here if you get ready to do it, I aint goin anywhere.......good luck
