On July 28th last years we lost Debbie's oldest son  22 years old  Josh . This has been a really hard past year and this month has been extra hard .
We had thought that we would get on the bike on July 20th and head in the general direction of inzane . But after spending a full day on the bike last week in +- 100 degree temps and being misrable the whole time ,we have decided to head in the general direction of Niagara Falls...not really caring if we make it there or not.The heat index shows twenty + degrees cooler temps . We plan on riding thru the Pocono Mnts and any where else that looks interesting .
Any of you guys and gals that is knows the area and routes to keep us out of the hustle and bustle of the citys.....we are open for ideas.
Deb say that she needs to be here with Josh on the 28th but other than that she is up for whatever.
We didn't change plans soon enough to do passports ...but hey we can see the American side if we make it that far. Really looking forward to a no plan...no time...no expectation , fly by the seat of your pants ride...And very thankful that our long time riding buddies and friends DWayne and Mindy will be with us every mile.

Wolf,  Have a safe trip and remember that the deer are in abundance in those mountains!  Keep a sharp eye for them.
Enjoy the ride and I hope to see you both next year somewhere in good ole W.Va.!

Central Pennsylvania has a lot of great riding and some great places to visit. A few to consider:

Routes 219 or 119 are both really nice scenic roads up through central PA, both with nice sweepers and run through small towns and farmland.

Once you get north of I-80 there are some nice destinations to check out...

Just outside of Warren, PA is Kinzua Dam along the Allegheny River and near the Allegheny National Forest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinzua_Dam

Right near there is the Kinzua bridge, an old, huge, railroad trestle. Most of it was blown over in a tornado years ago, but some of it is still there over the Kinzua Gorge. They just opened up a observation deck on the remaining part of the bridge this year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinzua_Bridge

East of the Kinzua area is Cloudersport/Wellboro, PA and the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania": http://pacanyon.com/

Once you cross over into New York, is the Finger Lakes region. This is a nice area with tons of vineyards and wineries if you like that stuff. Also lots of scenics: http://www.fingerlakes.org/

Once you get in to Buffalo area... scenic? Not so much... run the freeways to the Falls. The American side is definitely not as nice as the Canadian side, but you can see the Falls non-the-less.

I might suggest if you have the time, I would run Route 3 along the east shore of Lake Ontario up to the Thousand Island region on the New York/Ontario border VERY scenic up through pine and ash forests to the St. Lawrence River. In this area they have vacation homes built on small islands in the river; hundreds of them...from small cabins to mansions. Really nice area with tons to do. Take one of the river cruises to really see the area. We were there a few times and really enjoyed it:

If you are running the Poconos and then heading for Niagra, ride RT6 the whole way across PA. The run to Tunkhannock from Harveys lake used to be nice. Joes grotto pizza at the lake is still supposed to be good still and there are other decent places to eat there. I grew up 3 mi from there.

OR

Cut out across 118 through Lehman from Wilkes Barre, and head to Ricketts Glen. If you are bringing camping gear and want to stretch your legs, there is a 7mi and 17 (?) waterfall hike. Pretty but not for the faint of heart though. would be a heck of a nice place for a break anyway. Then cut north and pick up 6 and go west.

When you get to Buffalo, be ready for wind off the water. When I rode up there it was steady but took a bit to get used to riding at a angle.

If you come south early off 6, the 62 will take you along the river and there in not much built up so you are looking at 2 lane cruising.
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

Wolfe,

The ride you've 'planned' is the perfect ride IMHO... that is, no plan to speak of! There is simply nothing else like riding around on an unscripted journey of discovery... the sites you will see, the new things you will learn, the characters you will meet... the absolute best therapy that I know of. I'd tell ya to enjoy, but that would seem repetitious and unnecessary, as I know full well you will have a superb time!!! Looking forward to hearing about it later...

Don't just dream it... LIVE IT!

See ya down the road...

I work 5 am to 3 pm M-F, but would be up to showing you Letchworth State Park, one of the most beautiful places East of the Mississippi River. This Friday a small group of us are going to Port Dover, Canada for the Friday the 13th event. Call me if you want, 716-572-7252, and maybe we can share some wind in Western NY. I am an hour from Niagara Falls.
Ride safe,
Bill
