Hey, Im new here and have a few questions.
I just bought a 2001 standard with 12k on it out here in colorado and love it!
So far I changed plugs, coolant, oil, brake fluid, clutch fluid, air filter, and final drive fluid.
I am going on long ride, approx 3k miles and was wondering if anyone has any tips on
things I should check or parts I should take? also looks like battery is stock and not sure
how long factory ones last.  much appreciated!!

Check your tires.
Heat and high speeds will devistating wear out your tires very quickly.
Always check tire pressures when cold.

The Valk won't let you down, but be prepared for extreme high temperatures.
You may want to add one (or maybe a second) drink holder.

Check out the hill climb races and the flat track races too!
Have fun

If it looks like your battery is stock go ahead and get a new battery. 11 years is a long time for a battery. They do not cost that much. Better than being out on the road and battery go out. OK? Other than that it looks like  you are good to go. 12,000 miles on Your Lady. You still breaking her in. Be careful. Have fun. I am jealous.  :cooldude:

You might want to check the rear splines before you leave. And the elusive third O ring. RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.

Check the date code on your tires. Even if they have tread they might separate cords if they're too old. It's a 4 digit number crudely molded into the sidewALL. a code of 2304 would mean the 23rd week of 04 being the manufacture date.

I am going over my bike today for the journy to Sturgis Monday. I'm doing the oil, tire psi, tightening the header nuts, etc. I carry a u joint all the time and everytime I go west I also bring a drive shaft. This year I'm taking a alternator. Been reading about alot of failures lately. I trust mine to be good since it was serviced 20k ago. You never know. I would get a new battery.

Where you staying?

Chips the best place for excitment.  But bring earplugs if you plan on sleeping, and you'll be covered in a layer of dust every morning.  That is if you ever park your bike.  But it is the best time! :uglystupid2:

I would tear the rear end apart and service the rear final drive, and clean and properly service the driveshaft and pinion cup.  It's an easy job if you're handy at all.

You'll need plenty of sunscreen, liberally applied.
