Or this lovely bit of journalism from our friends at the New York Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/10/nyregion/taxing-bullets-as-de-facto-gun-control.html

Gotta love this line. I just stared at it for several minutes with a "WTF???" look on my face:

Quoteproposed exorbitant taxes on hollow-tipped bullets designed to penetrate armor and cause devastating damage.

Where can I get some of these armor penetration hollowpoints they're talking about???

Of course, it could be far FAR worse... I weep for our brethren in non-free countries. (And people wonder why we fight so hard against ANY encroachment on our liberties!) This breathless story from the UK (Albeit from 2006) lamenting the extreme danger and unbelievable breakdown of law and order from someone finding an extremely dangerous .22 short round on the street would be laughable if it weren't true...

If that happens, there will be no US of A as we know it.  I think that your are seriously underestimating the determination of us to keep the Second Amendment intact.

Canada doesn't have a Second amendment, maybe they don't need one.   However, our forefathers were smarter than it seems.  Madison in the 46th Federalist Papers attested to that.

The GUNS ARE HERE BECAUSE IT IS OUR RIGHT.......Sorry your wonderful country doesn't give you that right. Now knowing the guns are here and suddenly making it unlawful for LAWABIDDING CITIZENS to no longer have and keep them in my estimation would indeed be total anarchy......

Lessee, respectable US citizens cannot bring guns into Canada, (and i respect that) but criminals are getting guns from the United States .  Do you mean all illegal guns come from the US?

I think that we better drop this subject, I'm outta here.

QuoteAmerican police officer bemoans lack of guns in Canada

08/08/2012 1:01:00 PM

by Sameer Vasta
A police officer from Michigan was tempted to pull out his handgun after a seemingly-friendly encounter in a Calgary park. I, for one, am glad he wasn't allowed to have one with him.

If Walt Wawra had his way, a simple and friendly meeting with a couple of Calgarians could have ended in injury, or even death. Thankfully, in Canada, people like Wawra don't have easy access to handguns like they do in Kalamazoo.

Yesterday, the Calgary Herald ran a letter by Wawra, a police officer from Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he bemoaned the fact that he was not allowed to carry his handgun into the country with him on his recent trip to Calgary.

According to Wawra, while he and his wife were strolling through Nose Hill Park during their recent trip up north, they were confronted by two young men who asked if they had gone to the Stampede. When Wawra and his wife didn't answer, the men asked again — Wawra then said that they had nothing to say to the men, and walked away as the friendly Calgarians watched them, bewildered.

Wawra decried the fact that he wasn't able to reach for his handgun during the confrontation. His letter made it clear that he would have felt safer if he were able to brandish his firearm instead of walking away politely.

Here's what I have to say to Walt Wawra: you are ridiculous. The men who approached you and asked if you had gone to the Stampede did so not because they wanted to harm you, but because they were friendly. In Canada, it's not abnormal to be cordial to the people that share the park with you and make conversation; it's especially normal to be asked about the Stampede while in Calgary during the Stampede. The bewildered look you got from the men wasn't because they were threatening, but because they were confused why you wouldn't just say "yes" or "no" and respond to their friendly banter.

If you had pulled out your weapon, Mr. Wawra, I guarantee the situation would have got worse, not better. If you had access to a gun and had brandished it in this situation, all the friendliness would have disappeared from the confrontation and instead be replaced by threat, fear, and confusion.

Nothing good comes from fear: people make stupid mistakes, and those mistakes end with people getting hurt.Mr. Wawra — the reason we don't allow concealed handguns in our parks is to protect ourselves from people like you. The fact that your first instinct in an encounter, friendly or otherwise, was to reach for your weapon, shows that the people we have to fear most are not happy Stampede-goers, but overly-suspicious, gun-happy gun owners that think violence can act as security.

If you had your gun, Mr. Wawra, what was probably just a friendly encounter with two boisterous and happy well-wishers could have ended with the unfortunate and unnecessary loss of life. You may have felt unsafe without your gun here, but I feel safer knowing you don't have it..

Guns in the hands of good people are good.  Guns in the hands of bad people are bad.  Same can be said for baseball bats.

For all who do not believe guns in the right hands are good (and not coincidentally bad for bad people), please do a search for Kennesaw, Georgia and it's crime statistics after making gun ownership compulsory for its citizens.

Aw hell, I'll do it for you...

25 years murder-free in 'Gun Town USA' (WND)

Kennesaw, where everyone is armed by law (Financial Times)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennesaw,_Georgia

THEN, do a search for what happened in Australia or England after legal gun ownership was hindered.

Or how 'bout this tasty tidbit from my hard drive's Guns & Crime folder.  It's not the most current, but it's not antique, either.  It's also not meant to inflame - I've loved everything about my time spent in Canada.

Canada's Crime Rate 50 % Higher than U.S.

Press reports that Canada is a Shangri-la – an America with free health care and less crime – may be short sighted.
In fact, statistics show that the violent crime rate there is double that of the United States.

It seems Canada is looking for a scapegoat, too: Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin is blaming the United States for his country's violent crime wave. He says his southern neighbor is eagerly bringing guns over the border.

According to the Second Amendment Foundation's Alan Gottlieb, writing in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Martin is wrong for blaming Canada's rise in violent crime on criminals smuggling guns from the United States.

Gottlieb says the blame instead belongs on Canadian crooks getting guns from wherever they can.  "Blaming the United States for Canadian crime is an argument that does not pass the smell test," Gottlieb wrote. "Canada's experience has simply demonstrated that no matter what kind of gun control law a government passes, that law is doomed to failure because instead of keeping guns out of the wrong hands, the law disarms the wrong people.

Canada's gun control scheme has not just failed - it has failed disastrously. Clear evidence of that can be found in a comparison of the crime rates for Canada and America."

Gottlieb cites an article by Canada's National Post columnist David Frum where he revealed that "Canada's overall  crime rate is now 50 percent higher than the crime rate in the United States." Moreover, "Since the early 1990s, crime rates have dropped in 48 of the 50 states and 80 percent of American cities.

Over that same period, crime rates have risen in six of the 10 Canadian provinces and in seven of Canada's 10 biggest cities."

He also cites the most recent complete data available from both countries that shows that in 2003, the violent crime rate in the United States was 475 per 100,000 people; while up north, there were 963 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

The figure for sexual assault in Canada per 100,000 people was more than double that of the United States: 74 as opposed to 32.1; and the assault rate in Canada was also more than twice that of the states: 746 to America's 295 for the people.

Moreover, he cites research that showed the figure for sexual assault in Canada per 100,000 people was more than double that of the United States: 74 as opposed to 32.1; and the assault rate in Canada was more than twice that of the United States: 746 to America's 295. Also, in 2005, Toronto had 78 murders; that's a 28 percent increase in homicides since 1995.

"The situation hasn't improved for Canada; it has here," he wrote.

"Moreover, this shift in crime rates between the two countries has occurred while dozens of U.S. states have adopted 'right-to-carry' and 'shall-issue' handgun laws. During the same period, Canada's gun laws have gotten more restrictive, with the national gun registry being implemented," he added.

"Since declaring war on guns under former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Canada's Liberals have presided over the sharpest rise in violent crime in the nation's history."

Gottlieb wrote that "Frum put it best when he claimed, 'Gun registration and gun bans ... do not work,' adding later: 'It is not guns from across the border that threaten Canadians. It is the weak and cynical policies of home-grown politicians, and especially the Chretien/Martin Liberals.'"

Martin and the Liberals are not the solution to violent crime in Canada, Gottlieb wrote. "They're the problem."
Gottlieb concluded that "the disparity in crime rates says it all about how well gun registration works to stop crime, as opposed to actually carrying guns to deter criminals, and fighting back if necessary."

Gun control history of republics around the world
http://members.iinet.net.au/~nedwood/guns.html

1-----Nazi Germany established gun control in 1938 enabling the government to round up 13 million defenceless Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, mentally ill and impaired human beings, imprisoning them in concentration camps, and by a conscious process of attrition, destroyed them.

2-----The Turkish Ottoman Empire established gun control in 1911, proceeding then to exterminate 1.5 million Armenians from 1914 - 1917.

3-----The Soviet Union established gun control in 1929. Subsequently from 1928 - 1953, 60 million dissidents were imprisoned and then exterminated.

4-----China. Gun control laws were enacted in 1935. Between 1948 - 1952, 20 million Chinese, unable to defend themselves, were likewise murdered.

5-----In the United States the first gun control laws were enacted during the Civil War era to prevent guns from falling into the hands of black slaves who might be inclined to attack their masters and thereby keeping control in the hands of the latter.

6-----Guatemala. Gun control laws were passed in 1964: as a result, between 1964 - 1981, 100,000 defenceless Mayan Indians met their deaths.

7-----Uganda. Established gun control measures in 1970. Predictably, from 1971 - 1979, 300,000 defenceless Christians met a similar fate.

8-----Cambodia. Established gun control measures in 1956, subsequently from 1957 - 1977 one million Cambodians met their deaths.

9-----Closer to home, Indonesia, another Republic, has a similar record. Out of a population of just one million people in East Timor, 200,000 have been killed over the past twenty years until the recent bloodshed when it still unknown how many thousands more have been murdered. Being promised freedom these brave people elected to vote in a referendum during which the United Nations guaranteed their safety and still they died unarmed and defenceless.

WHEN YOU CAN'T TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF DON'T RELY ON THE GOVERNMENT TO DO IT FOR YOU

Next time someone talks in favor of gun control, ask them, "Who do you want to round up and exterminate?"
With guns we are citizens. Without them we are subjects. Don't let the liberal media control your mind with their propaganda blitz. They want to blame crime on gun ownership to justify eventual gun confiscation, but they're soft on crime law enforcement

Adrian, I don't like the course of this thread.  I have to speak up.

In 1990 the wife and I drove to Niagara Falls NY and crossed over to Niagara Falls Ontario.

Two days before our trip, I broke two ribs at work.  Didn't keep me from going.

Our stay on the Canadian side couldn't have been better.  Our host were perfect,  our sightseeing left us with a "Canada Know how to Do this"  memory.   Since I couldn't drive very well, we took a tour bus to see the Canadian Falls and the lengthy park along the Niagara river.

One thing stands out in my mind to this day.  I stopped at a rest room area, it was late. It was near the 'floral clock' , I think.  Not only was the rest room clean and welcoming, I had a sense of security at this late hour even though I didn't see any park police.

Overall,  A good experience for both of us.  12 years later my wife had passed but this is still a fond memory for me.

I prefer not to get involved with our two countries different "upbringings'  and I shouldn't have.

For all of us, let's get off this subject.

The anti-freedom people never give up, they just keep hoping to slip some new anti-freedom crap in on us while we aren't paying attention. And, if we stop paying attention we will lose.

As far as how our liberties stack up compared to the rest of the world. That was addressed by one of our Founders many years ago.

"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens
of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with
arms." (James Madison, The Federalist Papers #46 at 243-244)

If at some point in the future our society decays to the point that we lose our freedoms or we become too stupid to exercise those freedoms then our descendants should rightfully despise the generation that lost our country, as should history and the world.

And, the people that live here afterwards, without that most basic of civil rights, the right to self defense, will hopefully not defile our memory by calling themselves Americans.
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.
And... moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.''
-- Barry Goldwater, Acceptance Speech at the Republican Convention; 1964

That's where common sense and a knowledge of how firearms actually work kicks in.

A .22 SR contains 4 grains (260mg) of powder, contained in a brass (in this case) case, with a 29 grain (1.88 g) projectile.  The casing is very thin (can't find a thickness measurement), and when the round is fired, the only thing holding the explosion inside the case is the chamber of the firearm, not the brass.

If a round, even a .22 short, is set off outside of a firearm chamber, you will have a pop and possibly some brass flying, but by no means, a bullet flying through the air with the velocity that it would leave a muzzle at.

I was raised around firearms, still have'em. My next door neighbors son was one of the 12 killed in the Colorado shooting. Matt was a good kid who died a hero protecting his girlfriend from some nut. It hits awfully close to home. If you fail to recognize the human aspect and only see the black and white, you are trivializing a real problem. This young man won't be voting this November, get married, see his family or become a dad; someone else made those decisions for him. Not all unarmed people are subjects, some are called victims. I agree we have a problem.  And it is the gun control movement.  Matt's death was a tragedy that could have been prevented.  If Matt had taken his date to the range for target practice, I can practically guarantee you he would still be alive because 1) he would have had a means with him to defend himself as opposed to being a shield to defend his girlfriend.  2) the shooter probably wouldn't have chosen a shooting range where most people were armed, as opposed to a "Gun Free Zone" where he was the only armed person until the police arrived (after by the way, the damage is done.  Oh, and they WOULD have brought their AR15's with 20 rd mags.  Why are they the only ones who need that kind of fire power to protect themselves?)

Gun control isn't the answer.  Quick and severe punishment for criminal acts is!

BTW, all the people who are in favor of outlawing "assualt rifles", Semi-auto shotguns, and large capacity magazines, take a look at the "arsenal" the authorities bring with them when they come to call.  One guy with a pistol in hostage situation and a swat team shows up.  There is a reason for this, it is called overwhelmingly superior fire power.  The police want to be safe and want to defend themselves, why should the average law abiding citizen be denied that same protection?

I'm not trying to discount in anyway the loss of Matt and the others, but banning assault rifles would not have saved them from a determined criminal with no regard for the law.

Bscrive. I have heard this argument many times. "What does a citizen need with an AR15 or a handgun".
Its getting real OLD. I belong to a local gun club. We have matches every month using handguns and AR15 rifles in competition. An AR15 makes a fantastic target rifle. I compete in action pistol matches using handguns with high capacity magazines. We also shoot three gun matches using hadnguns, shotguns and rifles. We don't used 100 round AR mags but 30 rounds are the norm. My point is that these types of guns can and are used for things other than killing people. A gun is a fairly simple machine capable of injury and yes death if used by a evil person bent on killing. these killing in the last few months are very tragic and I pray for the families of the dead and the injured. BUT the guns did not do this on their own. Blaming guns for murders is like blaming Cars for drunk driving deaths.

On another note. I have been to Canada several times. Enjoyed myself every time. I am friends with Adrian (Chrome). I have been to his home on all of those occasions. He and his lovely wife Sue are great people and I am proud to call them friends. I would have never have thought to bring a gun into your great country because I respect your laws. But I sure would have felt more secure having one when I came back into Detroit on the way home.

If it came down to the US government trying to take away our given rights to own firearms as secured by the second amendment. I am sure there would be another civil war. The second amendment  was put in place  by our founding fathers to protect us from a out of control government.

Bscrive if you ever find yourself in NE Indiana. Call me, I will take you out to the range. You can find out how much fun shooting is .......

I agree, more laws aren't the answer, enforcement of our current laws and policies as well as punishment as certain as the wrath of God would go a long way. If you ban boards with nails it's just a matter of time till someone comes along with a bigger board and a bigger nail. Weapons are the small part of the problem; lackluster enforcement is the problem!

I do second my son's offer.  you're welcome here.

Firearms have always been a fun thing for me, ever since I started hunting in 1943.  I'm glad that I live in a country  that was founded on the principle of private ownership of firearms.

'Nuff said.

i just think that carrying a gun around is not necessary.  I also believe hand guns and assault rifles should only be used by military and police.  The average citizen does not need an AR15 with a 100 round magazine or an automatic shotgun.

Evidently you don't understand the reason for our second amendment:

"Thomas Jefferson and the founders did not craft the Second Amendment to protect the right of hunters and target shooters. It was included – right after the First Amendment guareenting political speech – to ensure the right of citizens to violently oppose a tyrannical federal government if need be.

AK47s and other "assault" weapons are the sort of tools that will be used if push comes to shove and the people must violently oppose the government."

Exactly, Trynt.

The 2nd amendment was put there to protect all the other rights we have.  They would not conceive taking away hunting guns.  Or self defense.  They put it there, so "the People" would be able to throw out a government that was out of control.

It drives all kinds of liberals nuts when you say it is there so that the common people can overthrow our government, but that is what it is.

Of course the crooks have guns up here, where do you think they got them??  The good ol US of A.   :2funny: :2funny:

I am just not agreeing with you that anarchy would ensue if you had to give up your handguns and assault rifles.  There are many countries around the world where their citizens don't have these and there is no anarchy.  although there are many countries that do have crap loads of these guns and there is plenty of anarchy.

Please stop sending any vehicles into the USA from Canada THAT THEN KILL AND MAIM US ROAD USERS.

Don't forget it's the vehicle that kills. NOT the driver  :2funny: :uglystupid2: :2funny:

Don't get me wrong guys, i don't think that all guns should b taken away.  i just think that carrying a gun around is not necessary.  I also believe hand guns and assault rifles should only be used by military and police.  The average citizen does not need an AR15 with a 100 round magazine or an automatic shotgun.  While these would be a blast to shoot, they do not need to be on the street.  I know that pandora is out of the box and to put it back in is almost impossible but it has to start somewhere.

Everybody likes to associate gun control with the Nazi's and the Soviets but these were not democracies in any shape or form even before they enacted the gun control.  You see gun control in lots of counties, is it perfect...no, but what is??

Disco,  You should do more research before you post things like that.  It is a total fabrication and they skew the results to meet their agenda....just like Al Gore.  and we all know he is full of crap. :uglystupid2:

the average citizen might need these weapons when faced with this....

BS.  Sensationalist media.  Scare the unknowing public into our ways.  I despise sensationalist media.
"quote"

Absolutely!

'bullets' instead of rounds,  'assault weapons',  using the word 'arsenal' for more than one gun,

'spray', it goes on.  These arseholes are either the most stupid or the most biased people around, or both!

Amen.  How many heard about this story on the evening news?

You probably didn't because it doesn't fit the agenda.  It might give people the idea that if you ban one particular device, nut jobs will just use another.

MadDog6 and Solo1, If I am ever in the area I will surely look you guys up.  You guys seem like real great guys.  Also, I loved shooting although I have not done it in a while.

If anyone ever thinks that us Canadians don't have any guns you are totally wrong.  I know several people who own handguns and all manner of rifles and shotguns.  We just have to transport them in an approved manner.

I used to have several guns myself.  I owned several semi-auto 22's.  One looked like a M16 (with folding stock) and the other looked like an AK47.  I also owned a Remington 760 pump action 12ga, a 303 British, Condor over-under 12ga, Winchester 7422 lever action rifle (really loved that rifle), a Winchester 30-30.  But, I sold them all though many years ago when I lost interest in the sport.  I never once though, bought one thinking of using it for self defence.  I just like shooting them.  I have also shot a FN C1A1 and a C2A1 (automatic) when I was in the Army cadets in the early 80's.  I had also reached 'Sharpshooters'  which was a cross rifles with crown patch for the FN and I was on the rifle team.  So, I would never say I know a lot about guns but I do know enough how to handle one.

So, If anyone thinks I am against owning guns, they are totally wrong.  I just don't think they are the answer to anything.  I would have to agree with the fact that the laws need to be harsher for criminals.  What Canada and the US need to do is punish those that commit crimes not try to rehabilitate them and put them in Club Fed.

Also, I don't think your forefathers ever thought that the weaponry of today would ever exist.  I think that if they did they would have been smart enough to limit the second amendment.  They never envisioned a mini-gun that could fire 2000-6000 rounds a minute.  It was the late 1700's it took them  about 30 seconds to load and shoot.  Then again, maybe they would have not done anything different.  I wonder if they would have done anything different though if you went back to that time and showed them present day Detroit or some of the other places where drive by shootings happen almost daily???  Think about it.

If global warming is happening...why is it so cold up here?

That may be true but on that same line of thinking. Do you think they would have made the First Amendment say what it said if they knew about TV and the internet. A lot of crap is spewed in the name of freedom of speech. As was said in this post. The second was written to protect us from a out of control government....

"I just don't think they are the answer to anything".

They are not the answer to EVERYTHING, but they certainly are to some things.

You can sit defenseless in a restaurant, with a nut walking around, shooting the patrons one by one if you wish.

But, I would prefer to pull my CCW, and at least have a chance.  I might lose, but I have a chance of survival, you would NOT.
