Brings to mind a similar idea at Bishop's Castle in Colorado.  In unincorporated Wetmore CO, built as a lifetime project by an extreme-right Libertarian named John Bishop, whom many suspect is playing with less than a full deck.  Though he's obviously a whacko, he seems to be harmless.  He has anti-government signs posted all over.  Had a friend who used to tease him - do things like put on an OSHA baseball cap then walk up and ask Bishop, "Do you have a permit for that?"  Bishop would implode...

Thanks for the grammatical lesson but I meant "Implode".  If you saw Bishop's face when he was getting his chain yanked, he'd turn red and look like he just swallowed a bottle of ipecac or alum, mouth would pucker only THEN would the hot air burst forth...  So it was more like implode then explode...  Yeah I got the first name wrong, just working from memory there.  I'll have to make sure to research everything before I post, & then ad footnotes...

I interviewed him a few times over the years.  He was always there, working on the latest addition.  Don't know the source of his funding.  But he's building his inspector's nightmare as a lifework, just keeps adding scary & sometimes flimsy flying buttresses or scaffolds and bridges - though he usually just keeps adding iron braces until whatever is flimsy isn't anymore.  That dome on the top, he says is to communicate with UFO's.  Told ya - might be about 41 cards in his deck...

I guess I got the timing out of order.  I only saw it once.  We were there in 2006.  I looked at pictures recently and was surprised at how much he'd added.

He's a unique character.  I only remembered his name because in his tirade he claimed he'd had the name, Jim Bishop, copyrighted.

On the subject of the original post, I really hate to see the state of Tennessee step in to bully the creator of what is obviously a big tourist draw for them.  As for his bringing it up to code, I don't see their allowing that to happen.

But glad the government continues to look out for our safety......

Pretty soon they will open the Tree house back up after they declare it a State landmark, set aside $10 million or so for engineering studies, handicapped access to all areas, yellow warning strips on all stairs not to code( or rebuilt all the stairs to code, keeping state funded carpenters in a Job for the next 10 years), Elevators for those who have had too many Sausage Gravy N Biscuits with a Diet Mountain Dew, shortened the Swing and put safety belts on it, Taken the Chapel out and put in a Multi Cultural Friendship Worship Area, upped the entrance fee to $25 to fund it (and require a state park sticker) and Mowed the Jesus Garden and replaced it with a memorial of all those who died climbing the treehouse (none so far that I have read or heard about).......

Oh and by then they will have outlawed all 2 wheeled transportation as a menace to public safety and we will have to ride out on our converted to 4 wheels Valks (electronically speed limited to 45 max of course, because speed kills) in mandated full body armor and full face helmets, and park in the paved lot a quarter mile out because they would be deemed a possible fire hazard to the tree house and take the tram to the site, because walking anything more than a quarter mile is deemed to be hazardous to the pubic safety...........

Isn't the future going to be sooo adventurous?

On Bishop's Castle - I talked with him a few years ago - he was working on building a homemade elevator, put together with obviously bad engineering and execution - don't know if he planned to let visitors use it - but I'll bet if he does, he's in for some serious conflicts with the gov't who WILL step in to stop him from killing somebody - unincorporated codeless zoning or not.  Besides that, when somebody does get hurt from his negligence, I don't think all his disclaimer signs on the entrance will save his butt from litigators eager to shut him down & take all he owns...
