Ever been to a NASCAR race and not watched a race?

Arrived at AMS last Thursday and set up the 50 x 50 foot vendor space we were allocated right next to the Coca-Cola Stage in the Fan Zone. Lotsa live music all weekend. Lotsa live music with the same songs being played Fri, Sat and Sun. Oh well it was better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.


Friday up bright and early before everyone else arrived setting up all the gear that could have "walked" over night if left unattended.


We were going to be sampling the four Jeff Foxworthy Grit Chip flavors and selling them as well along with 4 different types of monster bratwurst.


Friday was busy and a taste of what Sat and Sun would be like.


Each day was hotter than the previous. I reckon I drank between 20 and 30 small bottles of water each day. The heat radiating from the blacktop was merciless. I had so much sun screen on I looked white.


By the end of each day as the Fan Zone shut down I'd had more than enough fun and was quite happy to park my butt in a chair and let my plates of meat recover whilst everyone else went to watch the drivers go left.


The highlight of the weekend was watching Jeff Foxworthy meet "his peopl" during a 90 minute autograph session. I was responsible for filtering the aweful to him in an orderly manner and so could hear the conversation he had with his fans who ranged in age from the young 7 or 8 year old boys to men in their 70's. Along with the odd tipsy woman.


Foxworthy made each and everyone of those people really special for the time he spent with them. For that brief moment all was focused on was them. What a great guy. It may have been an act and if so he's very accomplished.


Fans were telling him they went to school with him, that they knew his father or mother or aunt or uncle. He really has quite a wonderful connection with them. Male hands shaking as they offered him their offerings to be signed.


One woman told him an VERY off color joke which i will not repeat here to which he replied "You know, my preacher tells me that all the time". I had to restrain myself from cracking up. She then kissed him twice on the cheek, slapped him on the butt and said "Tell your wife I said hello!"


I spent Sunday night at AMS in the RV so as not to fight the traffic and got home Monday morning.

Sounds like an interesting day to me, if long and tiring.  I think with Jeff Foxworthy, what you see is just the way he is.  Sounds like you need better boots/insoles, and a wide brim Panama straw hat. 

This has to beat driving a school bus.  At least for a while.

Yes.  Went to TMS in a luxury suite for one of the 500 mile races.  Watched the start, then proceeded to the bar to enjoy the free libations.  I think there was a wreck at some point but not sure.

Sounds like you had a grand time and it's good to know your boss Jeff is a good 'ol boy.

I thought it was just a bus driving job, not having to setup and tear down and work the stands.

Gee,  seems to me like 'real' work you have there, but in a better environment than sitting in an office.

I bet the views are certainly better than most office jobs except if you happen to work in Oss's secretarial pool division.

Yes, as a matter of fact I have been to a NASCAR race and not seen much of it. A few years ago, my daughter was playing softball on a travel ball team here in southern California. Through out the year they would have fund raisers all over to raise money for the team. One of them was a food booth and a beer booth at the speedway at Fontana. I went to work the beer booth with a coach and my wife. I wasn't sure how this would work out since I'm not much of a people person usually. As it turned out, I was one of the most fun things I've ever done. The coach, Tim, had done it before and was a great help and tons of fun to be around. The day flew by.  We were right under the grandstands, so when it was slow I could walk out to the seats and watch the race. It's amazing to watch those cars in person, they are so fast. We made a ton of money for my daughters softball team and had a great day at the track even though we didn't see much of the race.

when I was a young lad fresh in the military a slightly older gal (I was 18 she was 20 something) asked me to the drive in movies.  We watched the dumbest movie I  had ever heard about.......I kept wondering why the heck she wanted to go see this if whe seemed so mad at watching it..........till I got back and my friends had to tell me why she wanted to go there.......DUHHHHHHHH  Oh well, I didnt know

I once took two gals (roomys) to the drive in in my van, backed in to the spot, opened the rear doors, and shared space on a comfy singe mattress in back watching on our bellies.  Drank vodka thru the first pic, and I won't tell what happened during the second.......... but I smiled for several months thereafter. 

No brag, just fact.   

The drive-in movie was a great American institution, long gone.

We used to let our girlfriends in before the last movie ended, a really good girlfriend also brings a 6 pack or so
and then lock up the place and go back to where they were parked

Of course we would bring whatever was about to go to waste from the concession stands as well....
need to keep up your strength right?

I know the forum is PG13, but you have not lived until two girls try to touch their tongues together thru both your ears at the same time.  Then there was the skinny dipping in the pool after the show.  But really, trying to competently satisfy two 20 somethings over an evening is considerably more work than you might think.  I did my best.  Today, I'd just run away............

Only been to the NASCAR track once, I could spend the whole time scoping out the fans.

I worked for a track vendor for a decade after I retired. I've been to many Nascar, Indy car and even an F1 race in Indy. I doubt I've seen 50 laps. Sadly I was in the infield at Daytona in '01 and got out of the trailer to watch the last lap of the race. A bad ending to a great week in Daytona.

Yes. Brickyard, MOTOGP, Indy car, etc. But I did watch a lap or 2. Its cause I was working. But I love people watching. Esp when it rains.

There are times when I cook for some of the teams.. Usually we get to see of the race,, other times not.. Didn't get to see any of the Watkins race,, but,, did have to stop Tony from trying to beat the crap out of another driver..
