Here's the issue.  Everytime I get a new (different) bike, my wife goes ape crap when I start buying new stuff for it.  So I go and buy a Craftsman Bike Lift and get it home with out her seeing it.

I unpack it.............

Assemble it............

And then stash it in plain sight!

I wonder how long it'll take her to find it!  Shhhh...don't tell her.

Now how can I make the adapter mod I found on this site without getting caught?

Need to scuff it and wipe some grease on the paint.  Then you can say, "What, that old thing, what do you think I used on the other bikes!"   ;)

ajm

It will probably take her about as long as it took my wife to find the pool table I didn't tell her about. :)

I recommend that you stick with chrome. My wife can't see chrome. The Valkyrie has so much of it to start with that a little more, even a lot more, won't get her attention.  :cooldude:

Keep reminding me why I'm single. I have 2 motorcycles because nobody tells me I can't. Two bikes is better than 2 girlfriends. I can ride one and the other doesn't get jealous. AND they live in the same room.

Guess I'm lucky, my wife doesn't care what I buy.... as long as the bills are paid. Separate checking accounts works for us. She's a doll.

I guess that I'm the winner!  I have bought an airplane and two motorcycles without telling my wife.  And the guns, she has never had a clue.  Used to buy, sell, and trade at all the gunshows within driving distance.  Guess that I have a keeper!  Sure hope that she stays around another 42 years...Jim  :)

Jeeeeezzz, Mine tells me to get what I want. Then "oh, thats nice".
She has everything she wants and if she needs something I say get it and, "Oh thats nice".
I found that on Valentine's day, about 6 boxes of shoes stashed around the house is "nice".
That is a nice jack. Use 1" ratchet straps to hold the gal to it.

I have a wife of 21 years... and two valks... well one I say is HERS.  The IS.  If she wants to sell it... it's GONE.  otherwise... I am keeping the Standard.

Plus I have a quad, and lots of other toys, including guns.

I wouldn't trade my wife for anything or anyone.

Got sympathy for ya bro.  Your post might have been intended in jest, not really looking for advise.  But I'll tell you what I do anyway.

I'm afraid your addressing the issue on individual purchases is treating the symptoms, not the disease.  She needs her attitude adjusted and that can be tough to do now that precedent has been set.  I use a combined approach, and prevented the precedent.  First off, I encourage her to have a lust for toys - she has her own bike which also needs chrome etc occasionally. I'll even do custom mods on it for her sometimes, as well as fix problems which amounts to wizardy to her.  She is still responsible for her own routine maintenance, and she has the dealer do that - I won't allow her to dump the whole owner's responsibility on me.  I'll suggest purchases she might like, particularly good values I hear about - like the great jacket deal we just saw here - not as good in her size, but it was still under $100 for a $230 mesh/convertible jacket.  That kind of keeps the pump primed towards purchasing as a regular occurrence. Sometimes I'll buy something for her, install it if it's a farkle, and just let her discover it. We have separate bank accounts, and most of my bike parts purchases are business expenses, in support of my product platforms - everything to do with the business is emphatically NOYB to her, and that is enforced. I don't even hide it - basically DARE her to mouth off about it and she knows better, she'll get her head snapped off so doesn't go there.  I don't allow her to even ASK about my business or finances and she is NEVER allowed to see bank statements, while passwords to accounts are secured.  Allow a woman into your business once, and it will never stop. Yeah I even have two safes, one has the guns and important family papers (she has access to) and the other is my private safe for securing my stuff.  Lastly, purchases that may be appropriate for her to be involved - like the hot tub - I'll bring it up before buying it, just a general discussion on the topic, getting her interest on it.  Then if I buy it, take her input into account, like the color or other options, and conduct the purchase myself and surprise her with it.  She is not so skilled in negotiations on purchases, or says the wrong things in front of a salesman when I'm negotiating - like leak her true interest in it giving the salesman leverage - she'll say something that should be covered in Barter 101 and wind up costing us money in the transaction.

Yeah this is wife #2.  Learned some things about the female's brain; how women can't MYOB with #1 and so took care to establish the rules and procedures up front before #2.  Yeah I know, chauvinist statement lumping them all, I'll allow if you're female and reading this you may be the exception I haven't met - but I'm going to work with the averages since I can't know them all.

I think if I was you - I'd just buy the stuff and install / introduce it slowly and not say anything.  If she brings it up - the farkle is for SAFETY.  Surely you can always come up with that justification. Maybe even state a policy, you figured she would always be in favor of keeping you safe so you didn't bother her with it.  Trivialize.  And use your private bank account.

Oh yeah.  Don't fail to mention what a super-buy it was, you'd have been a fool to pass it by.  Women are great-buy addicts.

One other trick - keep the garage messy so she can't stand to go in there.  That's mainly why clutter is appealing to me - she thinks I'm just a slob - actually it's female-repellent.

Is this good advise?  Sure I think so.  At my age, who needs the cookie anyway?

We were talking about this recently in the parking lot at a ride... "If I asked
you if you wanted to go on a ride to XYZ next weekend, would you have to
ask your wife, or could you just agree to be on the ride right here and now?"

I'd probably want to ask her if she knew whether or not I was already
planning to do anything else next weekend...  :coolsmiley:

Heck my wife's a jewel!
She works as an bussiness analyst for a major automotive supplier. She works part-time as a certified MSF instructor.

I'm on SS Disability, but I also teach (as needed) Motorcycle Safety classes.

I have three Valkyries and altogether we own ten motorcycles.

My wife doesn't care if I buy new tools, accessories, or even more guns. As a matter of fact last year she bought me a M/C lift table so it makes it easier to work on our motorcycles.

She can turn a shoot better, ride better, and turn a wrench a bunch better than a lot of guys.

I never have to hide anything from her.

This week I went to Atlanta on business. My wife, out of the blues, asks me if I have any new Valkyrie "stuff" ordered that may be delivered while I'm gone so she can watch the front porch for packages. She loves me  :) and my 2 Valkyries!

Dr Bobs Patient

Got caught tonight!  Had the Valk up on the lift to replace the rear tire and didn't get it off and on fast enough.  She came into the garage to ask what I wanted for dinner, looked around and said what's this?  Pointing to the new lift.  I should have scratched it up and made it look used.  Had to fess up when she asked in rapid succession...when did you get this?  How long have you've had it? And how much did it cost?

I have learned by now that when I'm caught dead to rights, I just bite the bullet and tell her the truth!

I have a couple of policies regarding purchases and the wife.

1.  I don't keep any purchases secret from her (excepting, of course, gifts for her).

2.  I don't ask permission because I don't need permission.

What works for me may not work for you.   ;)
