The 2'nd day of youth season and the kids are rockin'

The kids in the family are doing great this year. This is my brother-in-laws Grandson who just took these three today. These are his first three deer, he took them near our deer camp, what a way to start. 



I was in the area today too, but I was on the scooter enjoying IN 234 among other great area roads.

Only thing that would be more awesome is if he got all 3 in 1 shot - congrats on the youngster bagging 3 in 1 day, pretty impressive.

Just don't let the elder folks in your hunting party take a white spray can and put spots all over them smaller deer.  My older brother did that once since I shot a very small 1st year doe size of a big dog when a youngster.  I wasn't going to shoot it but decided last day of the season and very easy shot and besides,  you can't eat the horns anyways and younger deer the meat is more tender correct?

You need to send those young men in your family down to The Great State Of Tennessee and let'em kill some of the deer around here...Better yet let them kill'em all

Yeah, the younger ones taste better, at least I think they do. If I'm processing them myself I'm all about shooting younger does. If I'm paying a processor I prefer to shoot bigger does since it's the same fee ($60 usually) per deer. I try not to shoot small bucks though, I'd rather let them grow. However, sometimes like in this case it's darned hard to tell which is which. One of these is a button buck but he didn't know it till he recovered it. The same has happened to me in years past.

I've got one blind setup way back in the woods this year. Not sure if I would shoot a big doe back there or not. I'm not gettin' any younger.

With us, when one of the adults shoots a really small doe there is usually some good natured ribbing involved but nobody really minds it. But, intentionally shooting a small buck could make you unwelcome. There is a lot of time and money invested in food plots, trail-cams, bows and guns. We also do some supplemental feeding after season if it's needed during a really tough winter. Intentionally shooting small bucks under those circumstances is like shooting yourself in the foot.

With the kids, and it's all about the kids, we teach them to be safe and ethical first and foremost. No matter if their first buck is a monster or a mouse, we're proud of them either way as long as they do it right.

I always like seeing the younger generation get out in the woods and learn why we hunt and enjoy the outdoors. I cant wait until my son is old enough to take out. We went yesturday and checked our stands and moved a couple. I picked out a great spot on a ridge point where I can see 300 yards down in the bottoms. That will be a good muzzleloader spot.
