Young Un-Americans (Not an anti-Bowie post)

Got a text from my daughter who is a freshman in American University in Washington D.C. that read like this:

"Have a paper to write on my cultural identity.  This class is really weird because no one wants to identify themselves as an American.  So mine is going to be my sole identity as an American because I've never felt that I belonged to another country."

Kikelomo Ogunofowra is her name.  Her mother (my wife) was born and raised in Jamaica and her father (she is my step-daughter since age 2) was born and raised in Nigeria.  Everyone in her biological families retain their accents and speak their local languages to each other when they are together or on the phone.  During the Olympics, it was strange being in a room where 20 people were rooting for another country.

And THIS is the only person in the class who identifies as an American (in a class at American Univ. no less).  Not a Jamaican-American or a Nigerian-American, but just as an American.  And even though she is immersed in the bastion of liberalism, she feels strong enough about this to go against the current.  I just hope that the teacher isn't liberal enough to penalize her for being and unhyphenated American.  Oh, the irony!

Kudos to her for knowing her heritage.  She comes from diverse backgrounds BUT she knows her home.  Reminds you of immigrants of old who came to America and embraced being called an "American".
I went to Ellis Island and you see what people went through and the struggle just to enter the country.  Pictures of people weeping.
Sorry got caught up in it.  I highly recommend if any one on the board gets a chance to go to New York or New Jersey to go to Ellis Island.

I'm glad you posted this, it restores my faith in American youth,  That's how I feel, but I thought it was only shared by other old farts like me.  I've always said that our Americanism should NEVER be hyphenated, when you do it is diluted and weakened.  It's certainly OK to be an American of African descent, but not a ........  I can't even type it!   Thanx again for sharing.

This little experiment in democracy, started over 200 years ago, was supposed to be a 'melting pot' of cultures in which the final product would be the creation of AMERICANS.

I don't think our forefathers would have approved of all the hyphenated identities.  All these names are good for, is to promote biases, grouping and inequalities.

It's both funny and refreshing that a young lady with such cultural diversities would be the one to recognize the importance of just being an American.

I know what you are going thru brother. Good for you on raising her. My oldest who is a sophomore at Angelo State University sends me similar email and text all the time. Atheist and communist professors at that place also that are forcing their believes on the students under the pretense to provoke dialogue. Two days ago our Texas Governor was speaking in the campus library and not a single student was notified of this event! ....I think the gloves need to come off!

Kudos to Kikelomo, when the people that live in a blessed country, not a lucky country as Obama claims.

Begin to hate the Identity of thier own country, our leaders such as our president should hang thier head low.

I am so happy I am an American.

Never owned a slave.

Never shot a foreigner yet.

I have nothing to be ashamed of.

Pay taxes that get sent all over the world to help people, even those that hate you and I.

Would lay my life down for the cause of Liberty.
