i have a pair of softail rear crash bars that are the length of my progressive shocks and can be bolted to them. would this affect the shocks function?

It would eliminate the shocks function.  

btw....."technical" questions should really be posted over on the tech board.  That's what it's for.

Just what are thinking ?? Are you thinking of installing these crash bars using both the top and bottom shock mounting bolts ?? If so,, you'll end up riding a hard tail.. If you're going to only use the top mount bolt then you'll be OK..

if thats the case i should be ok, will make a two ended bracket and bolt the lower part to one end of the bracket and the other bracket end to the swing arm area.
