C V N 65 U.S.S. Enterprise-a fond farewell

I spent two or thre nights on her in 1964 catching up with my ship-U S.S. Yorktown C.V.S. 10. I just heard on my local news they are going to decomission her in 1 Dec this year. Supposed to take 3 years to remove the nuclear fuel and cut uo her 90000 tons and sell the scrap. I M H O she is a very proud ship. As an ex Navy airedale swab jockey i will miss her. Enterprise-no longer going in harms way. Fair winds and following seas Enterprise. JOBS WELL DONE. Hand Salute-2.

What's really sad is that such a Fine and Proud ship is going to be cut up into scrap, instead of becoming a museum for all to enjoy.

One of my favorite memories of her is her "supporting roll" in Star Trek 4.

I was stationed on the Harry S Truman for 4 years, always docked right next to her in Norfolk. Definitely was showing her age and lack of technology compared to the Nimitz Class Carriers. It was a pioneer ship in its day, starting the trend of the first Nuclear Carrier and Super Carrier.


It's best role was in TOP GUN by far

I believe it should be a museum as well.

I took this picture a few years ago when we made a dead of winter ride to hang out on the ocean . We stayed in Myrtle Beach but did a day ride down to the museum ship USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point Charleston, South Carolina. The lady told us if someone did'nt come up with some much needed maintence money the USS Yorktown would be taking on water in a few years from lack of maintence 
Maybe why they plan on cuttin' up the U.S.S. Enterprise

Offcoarse they would dock your for unprepared steel.

I did a quick check and scrap's going between $265.00 and $ 240.00 a gross ton.

Talk about a rush-not only working on the flight deck but catapult shots and arrested landings are pure adrenaline. If you've had either you know a motorcycle is a very close second. That would be a nice road trip for you coming to South Carolina to check her out again after all these years

I was actually there at Charelston and aboard all 4 ships that are tied up there. I made the mistake of opening my big mouth when a wanna be was talkin out his poop chute. Next thing i know i have a crowd asking me about the ship and our ops off Viet Nam when i was embarked aboard her. This was in 06 or 07 i was there and after all those years i finally got to the bridge and the engine room. Patriots Point is well worth the time and money. You are correct Joe-i need to go again on my Phatt Ghurl.  RIDE SAFE.

Fair Winds and Following Seas USS Enterprise (CVN-65).

Had the opportunity,  a few times, to be onboard her but not stationed on or assigned to her.  I visited while assigned to other ships (conferences or meetings).  Had friends (counter parts) assigned to her while I was assigned to the Theodore Roosevelt and the Nimitz.  Was home-ported with her in Norfolk Va and again in Bremerton Washingtion.  She is an old ship, the only one of it's kind..... with spare parts hard to find, and well deserving of retirement.

With Nuclear reactors buried down deep in the ship, it makes sense to cut her for scrap when you have to cut her apart to get the reactors and associated stuff out of the ship. 

If I had the money, I'd buy her and convert her to a floating house of ill repute. 

It no doubt already fulfilled that mission when women were assigned to ships....      But that ship would have had waay too much upkeep, maintenance and operation costs to be properly funded solely by a little house of ill repute action.

As much as I sympathize with those wanting to make her a musuem, I heard several calls over that past few years for donations to keep them afloat and up to standards for tourists to safely be on board.  Wasn't long ago there was a battleship in Texas that was listing because it was taking on water. 

It's sad to see her cut up but, who's gonna pay to keep her up?  Some times, all that's left is the pictures and memories.     But, that doesn't mean she doesn't need to be replaced.

My father in law was on the Forestall during the fire - he was an ADJ in McCain's outfit.  He was on watch when the fire broke out.  Had he been where he normally would have been, he would have been killed in fact the Navy had called the family and reported that he had been lost in action, then called back the next day and said never mind, we found him.

Forever a breeze over the bow.
I got to do an arrested landing, controlled crash, and an assisted launch off the Ranger back in 197*garblegarble. Back seat, in an F-4J with an Ariflex movie camera held tight to my chest.
Turned out, not quite tight enough because I got attacked when the Catman dove.
Totally BITCHEN thing to do though.
I always thought a cool comercial would two pointy nose go fast guys talkin between planes and one of em saying, "Look down there, That guys riding a VALKYRIE."

I am also on ClubGP, a forum for those of us with the beloved Pontiacs. One of the guys on there went on a "Tiger Cruise" where family members of a sailor can board the ship and see behind the scenes. I'm unsure of the exact details but that's the jist of it.

I am including the link to the thread he made. LOTS of pics. Looks like he had an unreal experience, probably only to be bestest by those of you who actually served on her. I am very amazed and jealous. Enjoy the pics.

PS...there was also a burial of a veteran while at sea. Moving to say the least.

Served on the Big "E" from July 1966 to July 67.  Served during a 6 month plus duty off the coast of North and Central Vietnam.  Could see the large flashes from the bombs going off over land in Vietnam.

After about 4 months we began to see out planes coming back with bullet holes in the cockpit.

She took me to Hawaii for 5 days, the Philippines many times, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Alameda, CA.

There is an initiative to name the next Carrier after her.
