Test says your guard dog won't protect from intruders.

I don't have a dog. I've read here where some of you have dogs that might be the type to provide protection against intruders. Do you feel confident that they would really protect your home and would they attack an intruder if you were not at home?

I don't think this was much of a test and could have been a lot better with a wider sample. But it is pretty interesting. Basically they're saying that unless your dog is trained to guard and attack, it won't.

My house dogs are all ankle high so they won't protect but they will bark like crazy.  If all 6 got to a burglar, he likely would be licked to death.

we used to watch a show called 'it takes a thief' hosted by a couple of former burgulars.

many times the house dog was bribed with a hunk of meat from the fridge and led into a side room or back yard.  even the dobbies were sissies, I only saw him get nipped by one dog a mutt as he ransacked the house on camera.

Our first burglary our 2 labs were in their kennel while we were at work and they were drugged apparently just to shut them up.. They were never right after that..

However I do have a good neighbor friend that loves his reputation of having the meanest dog in the county.. A number of years ago ' Thor ' [ rottweiller sp] jumped out the 2nd story window to get the UPS driver..  Thor however was actually a sweetheart.. His dog now ' Dutch ' [ doberman] is absolutely nuts !! He is even afraid of him.. This dog will kill someone.. He is the biggest nastiest doberman I have ever seen and drank his water from rain off the roof that emptied onto a sheet of lead.. This is one brain damaged animal !!  And I should say,, we've had junkyard dogs [ for the junk yard]..

I guess it depends on the dog.  I used to have a pure bread shepherd.  He was solid black and weighed about 120 lbs (and he was skinny).  I nearly had to buy a mailman, two meter readers, a neighbor kid and a cocker spaniel (not all at once).  He really really didn't like strangers to come into the yard. I think he had planned to eat the cocker spaniel.  I couldn't imagine what he'd do if he encountered a stranger in the house.

I lube my drive splines with Guard Dog 525.
If I put a container at both my front and back doors, I doubt if it would deter any intruders.

But our 9MMs might do the trick. And my dog would bark his fool head off if we weren't home or asleep.

Our Sheltie, the Molly monster will bark and pee all over everything while hiding behind your legs. Go towards the twins ( our boys, now 2 and a half) and things go in a southerly direction quickly.  I guarantee the cable guy never pats a kid on the head EVER again.  He was leaving after a Svc call at our house and got about half way to one of the kids heads and she went from quiet laying in the corner to snarling, foaming, teeth out monster.  Scared that guy and my wife pretty good.   Cant even get up in the middle of the night to take a wiz with out getting atleast growled at.

I have had quite a few dogs over the years. I had a chow that was a big pussy cat with us - but let a stranger, friend come up and he would attack- without any training! It was aggravating at times and had to get him put up when we had company. We lost him a few years back and the one we have now is the very same way. They are one family dogs only and will fight to the death to protect their family! What was funny is when Red, our first one was a little puppy was a big bully trying to jump one a 150 lb. Rott. and a 100 lb Dobbie!    But they were smart enough not to hurt him then. The Dobbie would also attack but never bit anyone bc when he showed his fangs- that's all it took!

Giving a dog gun powder and raw meat is not a good idea unless you chain it outside awayfrom people, because the gun powder affects their brain, makes them crazy. We had a minuature schnauzer that ate 3 shot gun shells and emptied a bag of black powder( not all at once) and he attaked anything that moved. I mean to kill it. He was nutz. Not reccomended at all.

Haha, I also read it tears up their intestines. I had a chow growing up. Nala was her name, went everywhere with me, walk across the fields back to the pond to fish she was always by my side. Had jahoves whitness (spelling) stop by one day and she was at the drivers door growling and barking. He cracked the window and said "god will protect me". I said you get out of that car you will meet the devil cause no one will protect your dumb ass. She ate really well that night and got to sleep on the back porch for a week. Dad was proud of her.

He's a good guard dog, just keep his food dish full, and don't disturb him while he's sleeping (which is about 20 hours a day).......

 I had a break-in once...I was gone to the store for 10 min. the alarm went off and my Bouvier laid the guy open pretty good, took 150 plus stitches to close the guys wound. My dog did not have a scratch on him... Long story short cops found the guy in the bathroom. The cops had a good laugh over it. They were more worried if my dog was ok.

That's all a person needs is a good outside dog that barks when someone comes up and one on the inside. They could poison the outside dog- or the meat trick but can't do that to the inside one. Like Jabba, I just want enough time to do what I have to do. Now add an alarm to that and that's the best it gets.

I think everyone thinks they know what to do when an intruder is in the house,, however,, most are at least smart enough to break in when you're not home.. I've been burglarized twice and now think I know enough to prevent it,, at least its worked for the past 20 years..
Remember my liberal union official neighbor ?? He is convinced that his unloaded shotgun in the bedroom closet with the shells in the nightstand is all he needs.. He says no one could get in his house at night without waking him in time to be ready.. It must be nice to be able to go thru life looking thru rose colored glasses..

You are right about the installers..if you get the wrong one but a good dog will work. Yes that fellow is living in a dream world if he thinks he has time to load his shotgun!  There are quite a few home invasions and alarm or not, all they have to do is kick a door in...deadbolts and all! I tried it one time on a rental house where the tenants locked me out, all I had to do was step back, kick there at the deadbolt and I knocked the door off the hinges and it was a solid door!! Just a few seconds they are on you- alarm or not! People are crazy these days!

I was a locksmith in NYC for a few years back in the mid 80"s.  At that time, and probably still true today, most break-ins (car and home) and not done by professionals.  Most are grab and goes for their drug fix.  A dog that barks when the home is approached is a better deterent than an alarm system that goes off after the home has been breached.

Someone who make a living at it will case out the home for a few days.  They will take note of your schedule and see you walk the dog a few times.  THERE IS NO DEFENSE AGAINST THE PROFESSIONAL.  Like I said before, the alarm goes off after the door or window is already open and then the average police response time to a home break-in is 25 minutes (in my area).  Good deadbolt locks and locked windows are the best you can do against the professional.

Trained dogs are a different story.  I have a relative that lives up in the mountains on the island of Jamaica.  He has two mastiffs, a rotweiler, and a german shepard protecting his home.  He has to have dogs because he's pretty much isolated and the police would never get there and not even considered in the equation of protection.  One of the mastiffs is so mean that he has to be put away even when friends and family are around.  The german shepard mauled a "street" dog that wandered onto the property.  My cousin is also trained in the use of semi- and automatic weapons which he has strategically placed around the home and property.  You figure everyone is stoned in Jamaica, why would he need such protection, right?  Well, there's a lot of poverty there and very little opportunity nowadays.  My father-in-law, a native of Jamaica refuses to allow any of us to enter the country through the Kingston airport.  He's says they're crazy there and will steal the clothes off of your person.
