My brother has a question about the Buffalo Bill Museum there and if it is open now. He heard they were going through a very large renovation. He was wondering if it is complete already.  We are planning a trip that way in March and thought that would be a good one for the check off list.  We are going to do several days (about 18 or so) and may even wander into Canada on our trek.  We are trying to plan some sort of itinerary for neat places to see, but really, we are going to wing it and just let each day have it's way with us.  If ya'll have any advice as to ,"must see places", let me know. We are starting a trip planner now and hope to see a lot. We both are kinda into the old western stuff and enjoy old towns and such.

Hey, better plan on a middle summer or later ride.  Lot of those passes would be still closed in early spring  (April/May).

All great suggestions, but in March you will not be able to get to some of these.  Also try Spearfish Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mon and Deadwood in the Black Hills.

late july the Highway to the Sun should be open
It was still closed last week of June this year    Someday I WILL get there

but Chief Joseph Highway and Beartooth   two freakin big thumbs up best roads list winners right above Million Dollar Highway in my book

If you have enough gas Do it both ways. at least a few times. because you can  Gig says he did it 3 times but I think over 2 days he will remember Top off the tank leaving Cody and there is Gas in Red Lodge and the 1st motel on left going into town was reasonable and has a pool..Great buffalo burgers across the street

Lolo would have been more fun if the entire length of it wasnt cold rain but it was STILL fun

Check with Bear in the House, I think he was at that museum this year

thanks for the suggestions, you too Britman,(I knew that,LOL). We are looking at Last week of May and into June right now.
Joe, I may make the GOTF ride this year, we'll see.

Put Nebraska on your list. One of my fav states to ride in. Lots to see on the west side. Something Kit & I do when we go west is stop at the local museums. Very interesting tales in there.


For some old west stuff...

Front St in Ogallal Ne. Good buffalo burger here.


Oregon Trail wagon ruts. 3 miles from here is signature cliff. Pioneers would sign there names in the cliff as the headed west. I passes cause of the road it was on.

The Buffalo Bill Museum is (or was in 2010) in the same building as the Firearms Museum. It's worth the ride from Indiana just to see those Museums. Lots of good roads mentioned in this thread already. And the ride from Cody to Yellowstone is a great one too. In March the weather will probably greatly limit what roads you can ride or even drive. We rode past snow on the Beartooth in August of 2010. Same with the "Going to the Sun Highway" in Glacier Park. Of course, there's a reason it's called Glacier Park. 

Here's a pic we took on the Beartooth on 8/02/2010. No snow on the road but it was within a foot of the road in some places.

to be honest with y'all I never even looked down when riding up 14 till I was at the top of all those switchbacks, just kept looking thru the turns one after another   same on the top of beartooth
there is pull overs for the sightseeing part

Bodacious mountain road for sure, the first of many mountain ranges that trip

16 was down to dirt according to Bear and Alan because of road construction so I had the awesome experience of riding 14

can only wonder at the great pics I could have if my wife was sitting in the passenger seat for that trip

Those are some magnificent places, for sure.  We'll see some of them. My brother is a great photographer, so we should have some good pics of this trip.
