Thinking about selling.

   The miles just haven't been being logged for the last couple of years. The only real reason for keeping the bike is the knowledge of knowing that it's out there in the garage whenever I feel the urge. Sad thing is that, it's probably worth more in parts than as a complete bike.

Sometimes that's enough to make something worth keeping especially if it's paid for.  Just my two cents.

I think about it every winter until that first ride.  Then I take off on it and my blood pressure comes down to normal again.

If paid for and even if only put 2-3,000 miles on it per year, still worth keeping around.  What can you get in a power cruiser very comfy for under 8 grand? Not much out there else to consider for the price range in my book.   The only other cycle I would consider from Honda for the price range is a VTX1800 but that is still a V-twin and not as smooth.  I sat on one but never have driven one and didn't seem to fit me very well for some reason.  As soon as I sat on the Valk I/S at the dealer, I said to myself, hey, this fits me pretty darn good.

Then again,  if you really want to get out of riding cycles entirely or downsize for something smaller and cheaper,  I'm sure you will get all kinds of offers from us on this board.

Amost any bike a few years old is worth more as parts than whole. Depends on how many parts are left over. Keeping a bike that is paid for, but is never ridden, is bad cause when you decide to ride it, it won't run right. But if you ride it enough through the year to keep it cleared out, it's worth keeping. Why are you not getting the miles? No interest in riding? Too busy? will it change? I sold mine a few months ago, and am already looking for another to take it's place. I'll never get another one for what I got for mine, but, looking anyway. What ever you decide to do, hope you keep on comming to the board.

I fully understand where you're coming from John.  Been there myself a few times with different passions but, I gotta tell ya.  Living starts getting in the way, other things take the tome and energy you would like to use in the saddle.  Yep, I've been there but, I always regret the decision later on.   Some things just can't be replaced or replicated.   

You're also right about the value.  Whether it's a car, a motorcycle or a ATV, it's always worth more in parts than it is as a whole.  Hows about we plan and go for a ride, you tell me when and where and I'll do my best to make it happen on my end.  Let's Ride.  Or at least get together for a lunch or something.

I have owned a brand new VTX 1800 R and VTX 1300 R in the past, and there was no comparison to the Valk. Power was OK on the 1800 but handling was not good IMO. I wouldn't trade the Valk for 10 VTX's if I had to keep and ride them.

     I hold onto things pretty tight, I still own my first car, a 1964 Barracuda and two other cars I've had for over 20 years. While one of my riding buddies has been though about 10 bikes since we both bought 99 Valkyries, I still have the one that I've made a lot of memories with. The last time I had the bike out of town was on the ride with you and the other guys when we all met up in Bardstown. Health issues, the economy, life in general has gotten in the way for a couple of years now. Currently, I'm spending a lot of time traveling back and forth to Nashville and Saint Thomas hospital, my 90 year old father-in-law is not well and his wife, who is at home is not well either. I have quit making any plans and take one day at a time (spent Thanksgiving at the hospital). Not crying in my beer, I don't drink but I am really ready for things to start a turn around. If everybody can get healthy, I'll take you up on that ride.

I'm up for that ride Not too far from you. Going through similar thoughts about my ATVs. I knpw there might be times I'd regret getting rid of them,but I just don't ride them. In a world where so much attention is needed for other things, time just doesn't allow.

The FINAL decision of course has to be yours. I believe anything i or anyone else says may not sway your decision. BUT i will say this-whatever YOU decide make 100% SURE it is the CORRECT decision for you.  And i also realize not only how addicting riding is-i also realize how addicting our Phatt Ladies are.  Jest be sure yer kewl with yer decision.  RIDE SAFE.

f6john, I can certainly understand your situation with the father-in-law and his wife's health issues.
Hopefully, 2013 will be a better year for both of them.
I doubt I'll sway your decision on whether to sell or not, but I was in an accident in 07 in which my bike was totaled out..and me partially totalled out.

I was without a bike for over 2 and a half yrs. My family was very much against me ever riding again. But after my recuperation, it was murder every time I saw a bike go by. I finally convinced my family how much I loved to ride. I eventually told them, "If I die tomorrow riding a bike, I'd rather have that than being an 84 yr old, afraid to get up out of my rocking chair and missing out on life." They finally agreed. So far, so good. I haven't looked back.

Sure understand the issues you are facing. My mom is going in for surgery Monday. I am New to KY and starting to look for another bike. If you do decide to sell, let me know.  Also an idea, with horses, people do leases.  Insure them, take care of them, including all expenses and in turn get to ride them yet ownership never changes.  Maybe something like that could be agreed upon. Just a thought.

Sorry to hear about your circumstances.

My Valkyrie has been up on a lift in my garage since May, 2010 and is parked right next to my '07 Rocket which I haven't ridden since then either.  Major back surgery and continuing pain, along with the probability of another 7 or 8 hour operation this winter has me in the same predicament.

The Rocket only has 2000 miles on it since I bought it in July, 2007 mainly due to a long string of issues and I believe that I will probably sell it some time in the next 6-8 months.  The Valkyrie is a different story....I could never replace it with one in better mechanical or cosmetic condition and I've owned my '99 since new.  It was paid for a long time ago and I have enough spare parts squirreled away to keep it in top condition until I'm long gone.  I doubt I could ever sell it even if I can never ride it again.





Good luck with your decision.  If there is a possibility that you might want to ride it again, even for 5 miles, you might want to just leave it covered and parked in a nice, safe place.
