Just a thought here; my car, like many others, has keyless entry using the same technology. It senses via RFID my presence with the keys in my pocket and all I do is grab the door handle and it unlocks. However, as an experiment, I wrapped the remote in tinfoil....it no workee.

a couple years ago i got a passport card.  it has a built in RFID card, i stuck it in the microwave for a second, took care of that chip......  then i went to canada, the RFID part didn't seem to work, but it's still an official card so i didn't have any issues getting in, or getting out.  also used it to go to cozemell mexico (by boat) didn't have an issue then either.

My phone gets turned on if my wife reminds me, especially in the mall or a large store. It's always...."do you have your phone?" "Yes." "Is it on?" "Uh...now it is!"

If anyone needs to track me via the cell, they'd have a difficult time. I don't have it on in the car and I have the Bluetooth disabled both in the car and on the phone. I guess they're handy but I'm sure not tied to one.

Basically, there are tons of cameras out there, stationary and mounted on many cop cars, recording license plate numbers of vehicles going about their business.

Seems innocent enough? Think for a second. A database that has your license plate, GPS coordinates and a date and a time, cross referenced with state records of who owns which vehicles.

Quite easy to construct maps of when and where you go, every where you go, every day.

Not something I like anyone having that easy access to personally.

Turning off GPS will prevent numerous applications from getting automatically fed information on where you are at any minute (check a facebook post you made from your smartphone.  Depending on your settings, it may show precisely where you posted it from.)  However:  That will not prevent the service provider from knowing which towers you were near at any given moment.  If your phone is communicating with that tower (and it is whenever it's on and in range), the service provider has a record of it.  That's how most smartphone "GPS" services work anyway, I believe.  Cell tower triangulation.  Not actual GPS.  (The last statement is only my understanding, and may be wildly inaccurate, but feel free to repeat it as if you heard it from a reliable source).

Most large corporate buildings have systems that track there employees every move. You are required to carry your ID around your neck like a damn dairy cow. They can read your e mail and track every key stroke on your computer. This is nothing new and will only get worse.
I commend anyone that can slow it down but I think technology will steam roll right over them.
My doughtier plans to home school our oldest grandchild. I have been against the idea from the start but now I wonder if she may be on the right track.

Do you guys know that they can listen to you through  your cell even when off and there is no noise to detect them listening? The only way to combat this is take out your battery but the iphone doesnt have a removable battery HHUMMMM? I wonder?

It doesn't need to be a smart phone. The vast majority of all cell phones these days have GPS, and all will by 2018 (Per the FCC).

AND, they don't need GPS to find where you are. Just by measuring the signal from multiple cell towers and using triangulation your location can be pretty well pinned down.

There are other methods too. There are geographic databases of WiFi APs, and by measuring the WiFi signal and AP names it's pretty easy to get a semi decent fix on where you are.
