I was a little nervous when a baby black bear walked in front of me across skyline drive in the Shenandoah valley
a few years ago, and our bears are dinky compared to those bears. I hear that grizzly bears can leave
a mark! Have you seen the video of the guy on the Valkyrie getting head-butted by a buffalo?

Not only would I have left the bike running, I might have left my arse in the seat and pulled my camera out with one hand.   At least you were not in-between mama and the cubs.  And you don't want to be between a Moose and her Calf either, not even in a car.

Several years back when I was still living in Wy and was hunting, I went on a last season elk hunt South of YellowStone Park.  I was walking on 2/3' of white stuff with trailer type snowshoes.   I came around a small patch of fir trees to come face to face with Maw Moose and her kid.  When I say face to face I mean I was looking her in her eyes.  Moose are rather tall (I am 6' 4" and standing on tope of 2' of snow).   We were less than 15' feet away from each other.  I was able to back away (very difficult in trailer type snowshoes) while telling Maw moose how nice she look and that her kid was really handsome.   Yes, my rifle was in my hands pointed towards them and the safety was off.   AND I did get a nice cow elk later in the day.

As a side note, those who hunt in the northwestern part of WY, need to be aware that Grizzlies have figured out when they hear rifle shots, that a critter has been shot.  That means a free meal.   They start heading toward the shots.

Yep, a quick one.
We were in the mountains in Wyoming on a scenic loop when we came upon a bunch of cars, everyone was photographing a mama bear and her cub up a tree. People had these zoom lenses like they were photographing the moon, but they kept getting closer to the bears.(They were only about 75 feet away) I told my wife to get in the car, we're leaving this idiot crowd before that mama get a wrong whiff of something and charges everyone. ...  Wonder how long it would take a bear to cover 75 feet?  4 seconds??
I could just see mauled photographers and cameras with 3 foot long lenses lying all over the road.

  i have seen the buffalo butting Valk video several times.  last year in yellowstone my buddy and i came around a curve on a narrow 2 lane road and 2 buffalo cows were standing in the road and blocking us.  as we slowly inched up, a herd of about 20 were slowly walking up to join them.  some BIG bulls. i got very nervous as they closed in to about 3 car lengths. we revved our motors and honked our horns and they took off letting us through.

In our many travels we've seen some pretty stupid things people do with wildlife, picture ain't worth it, go buy a postcard!

...we werre cruisin through Custer State Park when this "momma" suddenly came out of the tree line right a long side us....baby in tow....I tole Chili....quick..get a shot !!


....Then I looked at that big ol brown eye....looken at me....and I knew...





.....suddenly...She charged ! ....and all I could hear was Chili goin...Go ! .. Go ! .. Gooooooooo !!!!


...so I tweeked the throttle and off we shot...up the wrong side of the road....she gave up pretty fast.....friends riding behind us got this shot..

My fairly close encounters with moose came when the girlfriend and i went to Alaska to get married. My future father in law(worked for the Alaska highway dept)and my future wife explained very clearly WHY i should do everything in my power while driving up there to NOT hit a moose. Saw enough vehicles after contact with moose to know i DID NOT need that experience. RIDE SAFE.

Dan , it's not a Jimmy T story, you have the pictures to go with your story. I don't have pictures but a few years ago we were snowmobiling in Vermont. I was running on a woods trail, maybe 25 MPH, looked right, 50 ft away a moose was keeping up in 3 ft of snow. Legs were flying with no effort. It was cool for a moment but I slowed up thinking he was going to turn toward us.

Dan, nice pictures of the family "Grizzly". I'm glad it wasn't a too close of an encounter.
A dozen years ago I brought my pedal bike on vacation to the Great Smokey Mtn. National Park, on Wed. and Sat. mornings Cades Cove is closed to car traffic for hikers and bikers. As I completed 10.5 miles of the 11 mile loop a black bear walked out in front of me. I don't remember how, but the next thing I know I'm pedalling the opposite way on the one-way ribbon of asphalt. When I got my head together enough to look behind me I saw that the bear had continued course on into the woods. When I got back to the spot where he went into the woods... I saw no signs of the bear but there was the donation box!

The truth of this all is you are a threat to the life of the bears. You're "bravery" could have indeed provoked an attack by the mother bear. Had she attacked and killed you a death sentence would have been issued to her. If the bear died that would have been the only great loss in this case. We have plenty more stupid tourists around but the bears are in short supply lately.

Next time you're out riding through the bears "home", stop the bike get your pictures and be on your way. Enjoy the rides and let the wildlife live too if possible. Do that and we all will know you're a great photographer and grand LD rider.

Yeah I know, kinda harsh but I like wild bears more then people who needlessly threaten their long term existence.

Yellowstone about 6 years ago.  Me leading on BluByU.  Kind of a scary situation.  We're not as close as it looks - this is a telephoto shot. My tentative plan was - if Buffy stopped leading and turned around or gave me the stinkeye - a hard banked turn and full throttle past him before he could react.  Figured I could launch faster than he could get traction with hooves on pavement.  Glad I didn't have to test it.  He eventually trotted down the road, off to the shoulder and I went around him hastily on the other side of the road.
