I'm afraid there's all kinds of copycat events going on.  And it's just going to get worse, with the economy getting worse.  Soon there will be a big push to do something, both from the Obummer and other liberal venues - including our wonderful LEFT govt in CO.  Particularly with this latest attack having killed a lot of kids.

Isn't liberal Connecticut really restrictive on CCW?  I'll have to read up on that.  Also - don't let it pass your notice that this shooter picked a venue where there is sure to be unarmed victims.  That is, no adults with CCW, and no guns on campus, even under lock.

The female anchor on Fox was rambling on about how the shooter was wearing military BDU's and so even if law enforcement was quickly on scene, they had little chance of stopping him since he was wearing this military equipment.  BDU is Battle Dress Uniform - basically black or camo ripstop nylon with a lot of pockets.  Why do they let ignoramuses do the reporting?  Then the reporters were going on about not knowing yet WHAT THE MOTIVE WAS.  What the F does that matter - as though this is a reasonable person and so needs an understandable motive.  THE PERP IS SICK - MOTIVE IS IRRELEVENT.  They were also focusing on what weapons were used - didn't know yet.  IT'S NOT THE WEAPONS THAT MATTER PEOPLE.  IT'S THE SICKO.  But just watch - your autoloaders are in jeopardy, and so are larger magazines.

I just hope the coming knee-jerk legislation doesn't result in the baby being thrown out with the bathwater.  I would think a "sensible" legislation might include keeping mentally sick people from buying guns legally.  Sensitive subject - and I am all about the 2nd amendment.  But some legislation is likely to be driven by this and previous incidents, so the NRA and us conservatives will likely need to start a dialog or just be overidden by a WAY too restrictive answer.

This is truly a tragedy.  And I am very worrier that many on this board's first concer is protecting gun rights - let's get our proirities in order.

What type of sicko would go into an elementary school and randomly shoot wild and kill 18 kids ages 5-10 and 9 adults as of now?  This world is full of nuts!  Only good thing is the shooter is dead and not wasting taxpayer money on a deadbeat worhtless spec of the scum of the earth.   >:( >:(

Right.  Let's get our "proirities" in order.  Let's confiscate all the guns and let only the military and police be armed.  Oh by the way, that helps the Obummer do anything he wants, including being a dictator since no one will be armed except the criminals, to revolt and throw him out of office.

We need a balanced solution.  And that includes ESPECIALLY PROTECTING GUN RIGHTS.

Just think, if an adult at the school had been armed, perhaps the shooter would have been stopped before he killed 26 people.  Taking away gun rights will not prevent this kind of insanity.

I know at our schools here in Willow Springs Mo. BEFORE you are let into the building you have to talk on the speaker and be viewed by the camera. If the person in the security booth does not like what she is hearing or seeing she calls the cop-the ARMED cop that is on duty all day at our school. It appears to be working well-at least up til this point in time. RIDE SAFE.

I heard that they have a similar security program there. You have to be identified on screen before they will let you in. They said the shooter "has ties to the school" What ever that means.

I don't think they had armed security, but he did have to be buzzed in.
His mother taught at the school and the class he shot was his mother's class (that's what I heard anyway).  Oh, and he killed mommy before going to the school.

It has to do with the 2nd amendment existing to protect the rest of our Constitutional rights, and the Obummer goose-stepping all over the Constitution already.  You're not aware of this?  Wake up.  Read the news.  There is already an obvious need to keep our guns because if the Obummer continues on the path he's on, we may very well have to remove him from office - forcibly if necessary, and that is in jeopardy if this incident results in us losing such absolute power in the hands of the people.  Yeah get over it.  Wake up pal.  You have the freedom you do because of guarantees like the 2nd amendment.  And incidents like this add ammo to the liberals agenda to give all power to the govt and none for the people.  And with the 2nd Amendment gone - what's next - the First Amendment?  Why not?  Let's just go ahead and call the Constitution a "Living Document" and revise it willy-nilly.  Oh wait, the liberals are already calling it that, advocating easy mods to our fundamental definition of The United States.

Oh I whole heartedly agree that the liberal press does a good job of jumping on gun control every time something like this happens. I agree that something has to be done to keep guns out of the fruitcakes hands. I own several guns, and will not give them up easily. I don't think that politicians want to take on the second because the vast majority of people will revolt. The thing is, How do we keep crazy people away from guns. Arming everyone would be one solution, but what about the people who won't carry? When someone comes up with a real workable solution, let me know.

sugerbear

" but what about the people who won't carry?"

that's their right to not carry. if their ever in a situation like that, they'll do nothing. unable to defend themselves. BUT. it's their right.

I guess the total score is now up to 29, including the shooters mother and school principal. I haven't heard any mention of the type of gun used.

Comrade Obummer just said he's going to "do something about it regardless of the politics involved."  That means gun control.  Herr Obama is likely going to issue another illegal edict, driven by an emotional mood in the nation (did you see the wiping of the crocodile tears? Actually they weren't there, but he had to make the big gesture.  Reminded me of Jesse's sobbing.)  And the fact he isn't worried about being re-elected.

The 2nd Amendment and your guns are in jeopardy - if you haven't already, support the NRA.

I wonder if the unbalanced out there see this as a way to heap fame on themselves.  We have at least two that still haven't received punishment ( like a firing squad) and have lawyers that are working the system.

Shooting children takes a real act of courage.  At least this arsehole is gone.  If I were a trained LEO arriving on the scene of a shooting like this, the perp would have numerous shots to the head and then read his rights.

As far as the comment about ownership of guns, the 2nd Amendment is more important than the 1st.  However, Obama will take advantage of this and do his best, legally but more likely illegally, to advance his agenda against guns.  After all, he, and his cronies, consider the Constitution as a mere inconvenience and a living document to change as he sees fit.

As Connie mentioned, one civilian carrying legally, might've put a different end to this story.
We, the legal gun owners have a rough four years coming up.

We need to spend a little money to hire armed guards at schools.  Just use off duty cops or other law enforcement.  My Grandson's school district has armed officers at the middle and high school level, time to put them in the elementary schools also. They man the entry areas as well as patrol outside on the campus.  I am glad to pay the extra tax it makes necessary. I did five years on a university police department after I retired from the fire service.  Hoser

As a teacher in a large high school, 2500 students, I shudder everytime this happens. There are things that can be done to make our schools safer, but the thing that scares me the most is I am in a room all day long with 30-35 students and it has only one door.

Would I like to carry my weapon to school, yes, because I am capable and know what I am doing. Are there many teachers at my school that I would like to have their weapon with them..heck no.

Not sure what the answer is but I would sure like to have a classroom with 2 doors. I hope the families get all the support they need.

This is a tragedy. One of my big concerns is protecting our gun rights. Take away guns from the non criminals like me and most other members here and what you have left is only criminals illegaly having guns. I for one will illegaly own guns if it ever comes to that. I will protect my family even if it means im breaking the law. Sorry if I offend anyone when I say this, I have no use for anti gun folks.

Any Gun Free Zone is a guaranteed Heavy Casualty Zone for any nut bent on desctruction. In the Middle East where guns are everywhere, people use explosives to blow each other up. Had the nut in CT thrown gernades in the classrooms, what would be the response from the anti gun crowd? Outlaw gernades, which are already outlawed. Same as murder, it's already against the law regardless of the means used to carry it out. In China today for example, some nut bent on destruction slashed 22 children with a knife.

What's next, everyone with a car goes to jail for a week just because some drivers of cars kill innocent people with them?

Time to arm "some" teachers and school staff, (and properly train them). I heard on the news that he started shooting in the office during morning announcements and everyone heard it. Maybe a few armed school staff would have saved 20 kids today.....

Well that's a partial solution.  And might have changed the events today.  Though the kid had his brother's ID, his mother was a teacher there, and he was buzzed in the door - so he passed at least some security.  However an armed LEO with metal detector might have slowed him up or stopped him.  Or he might have whipped that Glock out and blown him away first - then continued with his plan.  It was, after all, planned - they are reporting he dressed for the occasion including armored vest.  Of course the report could be wrong too.

But I believe since he just wanted to kill a bunch of defenseless people, he could have simply picked another venue, if the schools were protected.  Like the Mall.  Or a Chuck-E-Cheese.  Or any other place with "No CCW" signs on the door.

Or get rid of guns sold to crazies.  Oh wait, won't work, he stole the guns that were legally owned by his mother - whom he also killed.

Or get rid of guns.  Wait, won't work, what's going to stop him from making a bomb vest with black powder and 20 lbs of steel ball shrapnel - pick the right venue for that - like a theater - and kill 300 people with one blast.  He's going to suicide anyway, so the bomb suicide idea sounds OK. Make charcoal, saltpeter, and sulfur illegal?  How about an ampho bomb?

The solution here is cultural.  And requires good parenting.  And similar methods.  And that's a tough nut to crack.  I said 20 years ago, these first person shooter computer games are a bad idea - desensitizes kids to death and the value of life.  But the game makers squacked, "HEY, we have a First Amendment right..."

No I don't have answers.  But I'm sure there needs to be a dialogue.  And taking guns away from the law abiding isn't the answer.

Teachers need to be armed. It's sad to say, but it's true. It should be a prerequisite to teaching, at least at the elementary and secondary level. They should be trained on how to respond with force in their environment. All schools should have armed security, locked doors with cameras. Doors should be opened by security people at the doors, not buzzed open by office staff. This is the world we live in. The sooner we acknowledge that the better off we will be. I find it sad how the LEO show up in force, after the fact. What a joke, stalking around with guns drawn, after all the damage has been done. Once we have procedures in place that will truly nullify these things happening, then we can turn our efforts to figuring out why.

We've gotten to the point that we're forced to use "resource officers" (uniformed police officers) full time in our schools now, so arming teachers would be the next logical step.

I have commented before in relation to comparing gun control in the USA & Australia.
What a sad day this is.
If gun control happened in the USA people seem to want to blame the President.
I thought the laws of the land were set by the peoples elected representatives after much discussion & not just the passion of the moment.
Doesnt it say something when you have to go through a identification process to gain access to a school.
It is really the bottom when it is suggested that teachers be armed to protect the students.
Something isnt just right with the existing system.

Man with knife injures 22 kids at school in China
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2012/12/14/china-school-stabbings/1770395/
OK so what would be the priorities here?? NO gun but a knife. I wonder what the real motives are behind the shooting? It is interesting that it would come at this time when gun control legislation is such a priority to some. I don't by O's tears either he's already signed legislation that does essentially the same things to the elders and some others. While I am deeply sorry and grieved at this event it is the anti gun nuts that make this a issue to be concerned about. Not because of the lives lost but because they are like ad men and jump on every opportunity to bad mouth what the constitution gives us the right to do own guns. How callous that we even have to think this way worried that our personal freedoms would be limited because of one nut case. Its the anti gunners that are responsible for the paranoia that we as Americans cannot rest in our personal freedoms. Drunk driving, texting while driving, teenage drivers all kill more than those with guns so why are we not stopping them. Don't make a political issue out of this let us rest and support the families of this tragedy. Let us find the real culprit and then decide what needs to be done. We have more laws now than we ever have in the history of the US and more laws are not the answer. But we have the government telling us how to raise our own children and tell us what cannot be done. Including spanking and other things that kids can be taken away from parents for. So where is the real problem?

No mention of the guy in China that just killed 21 kids with a knife at a school. No mention that the guns were taken from his mother, who bought them legally. No mention that he was to young to legally be in possesion of a hand gun or the ammo for it.  So tell me again how more gun laws will stop this.   Say a prayer for all those affected by this situation.

WayneH

One thing that you can't get away from is that a man, with a gun, shot and killed a lot of innocent people, including children.  This is a fact.

No person in their right mind would kill innocent people, especially children.  Therefore, as others have noted, this guy is a "whacko", deranged, mentally ill.  This is a fact.

So... how does a deranged, mentally ill guy get his hands on a gun?  Might have been many ways.  Stole it.  Bought it and then mentally deteriorated.  Or was already primed for this act, and just went out and bought a gun to do this.  It would be a good thing to reduce the number of whacked out people who can get their hands on a gun.

Two lessons can be learned from this tragedy.  First, it is a fact that gun rights such as we enjoy will result in a higher level of firearm deaths, accidental and planned, than in a country where firearms are banned.

Second, yet another whacko has shot and killed people in a short period of time.  If the gun lobbies do not begin to support legislation that controls access to firearms by those that should not have them, then there will be a far larger backlash that may result in much more onerous gun control laws.

There is a lot of middle ground between doing absolutely nothing to try and control access to guns, and implementing a gun ban.  A proactive move by gun owners to "clean up their own" would go a long way to heading off more onerous and stringent gun laws.

Patrick

I don't really think armed teachers or security guards are the answer, they can easily make mistakes, their human. We have metal detectors and at least one police officer in some of our schools. Its expensive and ridiculous, but, apparently a must today.

I believe that this morning a bill was signed into law in MI that will allow CCW holders to carry in schools and churches in MI IF they take additional training.  I don't know all the details nor am I positive this has passed.

I did hear that the additional training consisted of firing an additional 94 rounds and I believe a couple more hours of instruction.  When I took my CCW training I thought it was a joke.  I was a military policeman for 2.5 years and open carried a .45 on duty (because they don't make a .46).  All you vets are probably familiar with the clearing barrels before entering barracks and mess halls.   I was always amazed by the number of un-intended discharges at those things.

My sentiments exactly.  Security carrying and at least one other school employee teacher etc. as a backup armed.  Sad but needs to be done.
