Indianapolis Hotels for Brickyard 400

Planning to go to the Brickyard in July and was looking for suggestions for a decent hotel. Would like something out of downtown maybe 30 minutes to track with places close-by to eat and have a couple drinks. Coming in from the east from upstate NY.

Speedway is on the 'west' side. Its been awhile since I been there but the only hotels are near the airport on that side. To me its on the 'scarey' part of town. I personally would stay downtown. Its a short drive from there, less then a 1/2 hr. Alot to do downtown and everything is walking distance. The hotel I stayed at on the upper west side is the Clarian at the Waterfront. Nice (cheap) hotel and it has a bar inside it. Again, 1/2 hr from the track. Its off of I-465 and High School Girls Rd or something like that. Its been 6 yrs since we stayed there.
If you want to wow your spouse book the Omni downtown. Its a fancy place. We stayed there in 06 and got a room for $70. Rolled up to the valet in leathers. Boy did we get looks!

Greenwood would be a great area to stay. South of indy id say within half an hour from the track. Jabba will fill you in he knows the area a little better than me.

Last time I went, we stayed in a tent in the parking area right outside the track.  Probably not what you're looking for...at least if you're wanting to get any sleep!

Actually now that I think about it, every time I've gone...NASCAR or Indy car...I've stayed right there at the track in a tent.
