Friends and family have portrayed Mrs. Lanza as a paranoid "survivalist" who believed the world was on the brink of violent collapse.  She is thought to have trained her sons, Adam and Ryan to shoot, even taking them to local ranges.  Her sister-in-law said she repeatedly talked about her preparations for the economic and social meltdown.  Apparently part of a survivalist movement which urges people to prepare for thhe breakdown of society by training with weapons and hoarding food and other supplies.  :o

Combine that with a mentally disturbed child, perhaps Ausbergers (sp) syndrome, and likely heavy use of first-person shooter video games at an immature age, and you have a deadly recipe.

Since I started taking my daughter shooting when she was 4, bought the triplets their first rifles at 16 weeks gestation, and let my kids play "violent video games", I guess you'll be hearing about my kids in the news in another 10-15 years...

I would not jump to too many conclusions. A lot of mis-information came out early. A tragedy no matter the circumstances.

Mark do you even know what Aspergers Syndrome is?
My son has Aspergers as do many. He is also a avid deer hunter.
1 in 88 kids born today are on the Autism spectrum.

Just a thought, the US is trillions in debt and there is no plan to get out while we downgrade our military. Europe is bankrupt, the Chinese are floating a blue water navy, and the Russians are arresting punk bands for lyrics. What is the paranoia again?

We can, cold pack and my kids hunt and have shot games match high power comps. IAW you, I guess my family is a time bomb.
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

We had a massive ice-storm in the late 70's...we were without power and transportation for 9 days.

We "extremist preppers" enjoyed our vacation and fed/provided heat and basic sanitation for three households of neighbors.

Of course, we didn't know at the time that we were "preppers"...we just thought it was common sense...

Between our own beefs in the freezers, garden grown food, and normal canned food, I am sure we could go several months without  buying anything.

Now, fresh stuff would run out, and the selection would get thin, but we would survive!

We are NOT preppers, just ND farmers and ranchers!  Two years ago, power was out for 15 days here, and we were the lucky ones!  January, and the temps dropped to -20 at night.  Hit zero during the day.

Kept a 4020 diesel running a pto generator.  Cost me about $100 a day for diesel fuel.  I will NEVER complain about an electric bill again!  I have electric heat in the house, well pumps for the cattle, and heaters in the waterers to keep them ice free.

MUST be prepared!

1 in 88 kids born today are on the Autism spectrum.

There was an expert on the subject who said the CT shooter had Asperger's, on one of the many reports I saw.  No, I can't say who it was so I can't back that up.  But I can look Asperger's up, so I did.  I'll wait and see what REAL experts have to say on the subject, and if they concur he had Asperger's.

This is only the beginning of a long article on the subject on wikipedia, not a clinical authority but folks who author articles there are supposed to know their subject.

"Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger's syndrome or Asperger disorder, is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical (peculiar, odd) use of language are frequently reported.[1][2]

"The syndrome is named after the Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger who, in 1944, studied and described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication skills, demonstrated limited empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy.[3] The modern conception of Asperger syndrome came into existence in 1981[4] and went through a period of popularization,[5][6] becoming standardized as a diagnosis in the early 1990s. Many questions remain about aspects of the disorder.[7] There is doubt about whether it is distinct from high-functioning autism (HFA);[8] partly because of this, its prevalence is not firmly established,[1] and it has been proposed that the diagnosis of Asperger's be eliminated, to be replaced by a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder on a severity scale.[9]

"The exact cause is unknown. Although research suggests the likelihood of a genetic basis,[1] there is no known genetic etiology[10][11] and brain imaging techniques have not identified a clear common pathology.[1] There is no single treatment, and the effectiveness of particular interventions is supported by only limited data.[1] Intervention is aimed at improving symptoms and function. The mainstay of management is behavioral therapy, focusing on specific deficits to address poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness.[12] Most children improve as they mature to adulthood, but social and communication difficulties may persist.[7] Some researchers and people with Asperger's have advocated a shift in attitudes toward the view that it is a difference, rather than a disability that must be treated or cured.[13][14]

Whether he had that specific disorder, or another one, or no diagnosed disorder, he was clearly disturbed, as evidenced by what he did.  So it matters to you who may have a relative with a specific diagnoses, not wanting to have a commonality with the sick perp.  I get that.  If it turns out the perp had some other diagnosis, then accept my apology for repeating what I heard some expert say.  I don't presume to know anything about mental illness, haven't studied it, only have some exposure via the media as pretty much the same understanding that Joe Plumber has. And my experience has seen that the media gets it wrong more than they get it right.

Aspergers Syndrome usually manifests itself in the inability of the person to pick up on and grasp social cues. They are typically geeky, withdrawn and have few friends. The list goes on on on but they are rarely violent.

NBC News, this evening, reports the perp's family and teachers say he had Aspergers.  This is a second source of this information, confirming the first report this weekend. So I stand behind the statement.   I'm sure there will be more reports on the subject - but at this point - I AM RIGHT THE PERP HAD ASPERGER'S SYNDROME.

I believe the point that was trying to be made was not that he isn't on the Autism spectrum (Or has Asperger's Syndrome if you prefer) but that the relevance of someone having Asperger's syndrome to someone being a homicidal maniac is about the same as saying someone's got red hair.

However bad the shooter's psychiatric issues were, his mother (who had to know him better than anyone, cloistered away in their home together for the last four years) made a huge (and perhaps criminal) error in judgment allowing her guns to be available to her son for her own and 26 other murders.  If she locked them up at all, it was apparently a lousy effort.  He tried to buy a rifle three days before the shooting, but couldn't make it thru the background questions, and failed.  Without her guns, he would not likely have had access to any at all.  One also has to wonder if she sought and obtained adequate care and treatment (and medication) for that son.  Money was not an issue.

We are still in the dark on much of the background in this case.  And some questions may never be answered.

For any given mental disorder, psychosis, neurosis, the degree of impairment from whatever the particular diagnosis is (and there can be several diagnoses).......... varies widely between individuals.

You're sure I think Hilter [sic] had this disorder too.  Really intelligent comment pal. Supported how?  I didn't make a "statement that's the reason he did it."  Learn how to read, or at least don't fabricate quotes.

The point here is he had the mental disorder I said he did so I'm not talking out my ass, as several have said in different words.  I agree that Asperger's syndrome doesn't usually have a relationship to violent behavior, according to several experts I've read.  The point I'm making is, the shooter had a diagnosed mental disorder, and that alone - regardless of what the specific diagnosis was - would have got him denied on the application to buy a weapon, if he didn't lie about it.  He was clearly mentally sick, one official diagnosis was Asperger's, and there may have been additional diagnoses as well, we don't yet know.  Perhaps much more serious psychotic illness.

Let's put the blame where it really is.
My grandson has Aspergers & with the love that is given to him, he has at 13, turned out to be someone I am proud of.
The real problem is the ease of access in the USA to firearms & the right through the Constitution for ownership ( and use ).
In 1997 the Australian Govenment identified certain firearms they were going to make illegial to own, unless special circumstances could be given.
Over 650,000 were bought & destroyed by the Govenment.
This removed semi-automatic weapons  from the domestic market.
A similar program in the United States would take more than 40 million firearms off the streets.
While this program may be too contraversial for the US, at the least a start needs to be made.
Otherwise the next mass killing will surely happen.

Austrilian people must be scared of their government. Watch and see what happens if they try to take americans guns away. The people will rise up and overthrow the government. Its past the point of the people having the power, obama has all the power and he plans to use it. It will blow up in his face and start a war between the people and the government.

Yeah we REALLY want to go down that road.................  :uglystupid2:

QuoteIt is a common fantasy that gun bans make society safer.  In 2002 -- five years after enacting its gun ban -- the Australian Bureau of Criminology acknowledged there is no correlation between gun control and the use of firearms in violent crime.  In fact, the percent of murders committed with a firearm was the highest it had ever been in 2006 (16.3 percent), says the D.C. Examiner.

Even Australia's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research acknowledges that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:

•In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.

•Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.

•Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.

Moreover, Australia and the United States -- where no gun-ban exists -- both experienced similar decreases in murder rates:

•Between 1995 and 2007, Australia saw a 31.9 percent decrease; without a gun ban, America's rate dropped 31.7 percent.

•During the same time period, all other violent crime indices increased in Australia: assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.

•Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.

Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.

•At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8 percent: rape dropped 19.2 percent; robbery decreased 33.2 percent; aggravated assault dropped 32.2 percent.

•Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women.

While this doesn't prove that more guns would impact crime rates, it does prove that gun control is a flawed policy.  Furthermore, this highlights the most important point: gun banners promote failed policy regardless of the consequences to the people who must live with them, says the Examiner.

A gun ban will not make the united states safer. I own 43 guns, does that make me a crazy killer? They are all locked in my gun safe at all times, unless im using them and one handgun I keep in the bedroom. The safe is bolted to the concrete floor and only I know how to open it. Lots of members here are gun owners, we feel the same about oir guns ad we do our valkyries. the united states is a whole different kind of living compared to austrilia.  Dosent the government own most of the land there?

There's a big difference between Australia and America.  We have two countries that we border.  One of the two countries has a government that supplies us with illegal immigrants, and a good supply of narcotics, with the narcotics you'll get some pretty good automatic weapons and drug dealers that aren't afraid of killing people.  So getting guns into America isn't hard, and once our government outlaws guns, yep, you guessed it; only outlaws will have the guns.  I am not a gun owner by the way, sold my guns when my youngest child was born.  Mainly because I never wanted them to accidently get a hold of any of my guns and have an accident.  I have nothing against gun owners either, only when they feel the need to take the law into their own hands, then there's an issue. But that's another story.

Now, as for the "prepper" mom.  From what I've read about her, she wasn't a very good mother.  I would in no way blame Asperger's syndrome, mainly because I know a few kids with it, and they're not violent in any way, I do believe that the kid was "brainwashed" into believing that the world was going to end, and that in his own mind he believed he was doing the children a favor by putting them out of their misery.  We will never know for certain if my hypothesis is correct, but it's just a theory I have.  I blame our government also, for not creating a more promising future for the children of this country.  What future are we giving them when we add another trillion dollars of debt to their future each year?
Promote world peace, ban all religion.

Neal Cavuto had a person from the Sandy Hook School District on, who had worked with the shooter for years while he was in school.

He said he met almost weekly with the mother, as they reviewed and went over school plans for the shooter.  He said she was a very good and involved mother. He said she was working with him all the time.

So, those of you who attack and demean the mother, without knowing anything at all about her, please get some FACTS, not opinions.  You are as bad as the ones who automatically say ban guns!  LOL

The fact that cannot be disputed is the shooter used mom's firearms/ammo....... to her everlasting shame.

Combine that with a mentally disturbed child, perhaps Ausbergers (sp) syndrome, and likely heavy use of first-person shooter video games at an immature age, and you have a deadly recipe.
You sir, have no idea what you are talking about.

OK Mr Know it all. Perhaps you can enlighten us.  God forbid I should have an opinion or repeat part of what another said without heavily researching everything there is to know on the subject.  Come on, expert.  Bless us with your incredible knowledge and wisdom.
I wasn't going to say anything until your response. My 12 year grandson has ausbergers and he is no way mental disturbed. I have read plenty on this once I found out about it. So instead of popping off put your mind in gear before mouth in motion.

I know they said he had Asperger, just your statement that's the reason he did it and mental disturbed. Don't judge others who has it and think they are disturbed. I'm sure you think Hilter had Asperger also  :crazy2: I get very upset when people think my grandson is mental disturbed. It's the way they were raised. Most kids with this aren't violent.
David

While my Hilter quote was out there in left field, the point still remains, until you understand Asperger and experience being around someone with it you and the all mighty news have no ideal what you are talking about. I know if you hear it on the news are net it's got to be right. So this is my last post on this. I can see clearly you have tunnel vision.
