Friend tells me they have a model that once up to speed runs on 4 cylinders.

I've done a quick search and can find nothing.

Is he correct?

Google Tahoe cylinder deactivation. It is an option

Skinhead

It is standard on some of the V8's I believe all 5.3L V8's have it, it is called ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT.

What Skinhead said. It disables 4 cylinder by "turning off" their lifters. You can barely tell its doing it unless you have the Drivers Information Center set to read it. Its good for fuel mileage but you have to keep the oil changed on a regular basis or it could clog up the little screens in the lifter actuators...

Its a pretty neat engine management system. I have a friend that averaged 26mpg in his 2500 silverado. With 4 wheel drive.

Oops, on a trip from Pittsburgh back to here. About 350 miles.

I have it on my 2011 Tahoe.  I also had a 2007 Avalanche with it.  It works good.  You can't tell when it goes back and forth between 4 and 8 cylinders except if you want to watch the drivers information center display like Mad6Gun stated. I had a flowmaster muffler on the Avalanche and you could also hear the change, but with the stock muffler I have on the Tahoe, you can't hear it.  I was a little skeptical when I bought the Avalanche, because of the old 4-6-8 Cadallic that had some problems, but the 5.3 with the active fuel management is rock solid and I have had no problems with it.  (just my 2 cents and 100,000 miles worth of experience with it)

Thanks guys.

I read that it is NOT as fuel efficient as he was telling me.

The Caddy 8-6-4 engine was a piece of crap. They never worked right and always needed repairs. Most of the time customers just wanted them disabled. The new Active Fuel Management is a lot better.
