Gone crazy, where does it end. You can not buy ammo or guns with out getting screwed in the pricing. Ky. had 260,207 back ground checks in 2012. In 1998 , 31,869, to 2012 2,589,358. That is a LOT of of folks trying to buy a fire arm.

just got back from shopping at walmart, no ammo to be had. 1 100 round box of .40 one 20 round box same cal. a few boxes of .22 rim. NO other rifle or pistol ammo to be had. shotgun ammo is in short supply as well.

I'm glad I don't have the money to buy right now I'd just be SOL......

Just got .38 sp 100 rnds of WWB for $34 at Wal Mart. Plenty of .38 and 9 but not alot of others.

I was thinking, why didn't the ammo makers anticipate this and ramp up.  But maybe they did.  Possibly they couldn't increase production quickly if they are already right-sized in production facilities - that is, already operating at 90% capacity (or so) already - not much reserve capacity, as that would be capital assets not earning their keep. I'm glad I already have a stock of ammo - but wish it was a lot more - just in case King Obummer has any success in his dictates agenda.

NY just had some 'emergency' gun law changes which are more restrictive than the new federal stuff will be. I don't know if this is nation wide or not but here in NY there is now a background for buying ammo. Crazy.
If anyone wishes to read the new New York laws, its interesting how stupid they are. Our legislators in their infinite wisdom forgot to exclude law enforcement.

Would depend on many factors....in addition to how often you shoot, how many guns of each caliber you have as well.  If you have 4 - 9 mm guns, you surely wouldn't want the same as if you only had one .40cal gun.  I would say, 1000 minimum per gun (regardless of caliber)..... so if you had 4 - 9mms then 4k rounds.     And.... with .22s being so fun and fast to go thru, I would say 5k per .22 gun is a good start.

And consider this.... since you are saving gas by not riding during the winter, spend that money on ammo instead.

I was watching the site I've been buying ammo from and Friday night they finally had some 9mm come up. It was disappearing before I could get my CC info in. It would go from 68 cases of 1,000 to 0 before I could get my info in.

I finally did manage to pick up a thousand for $279

If stored properly, it's more or less indefinite.

I regularly shoot WWII surplus ammo, or even older, and, on quality stuff, I've never had a misfire or any other problem.

(Only problems I've ever had with it was some really crappily made Turkish pre WWII stuff that was so bad the bullets would literally fall out of the cartridges if you turned 'em upside down.)

When the 'Chairman' first came to power there was supposedly a rush and subsequent shortage of ammo supplies around the country, but it never reached my area. This time around however, most of the shelves of every store (Wal-Mart, Meijers, Gander Mountain, Dunhams, etc) I've tried, are empty. All I'm looking to do is add more .22 ammo and I simply can't find it. Seriously; it's just not there! Amazing.

As for the question posted above concerning 'amounts,' I believe 2000 of EACH caliber is the 'minimum' starting point. 10,000 would be even better! Of course, 'goals' and 'planned for' circumstances could dictate otherwise.  IMO also; Offensive oriented calibers (i.e. most rifles) are the LESS needed. I would concentrate on short distance, quieter, small game rounds AND defensive rounds.

A good starting point (for discussion if nothing else) is the answer to the question I asked here a couple years ago; what TWO guns can/are you going to take when/if you bugged out? Again, IMO, I can't imagine 'many' situations where I WANT to shoot LONG range.  Not many things 'good' can happen in return and a whole world of 'bad' can be dumped down on you when you make your presence known. But. . . what do I know? Let the debate start!

I was at sportsmans warehouse today and they said that they have people showing up in the parking lot at 2 am. They camp in line waiting on the truck to deliver ammo and guns. The stock never hits the shelves.

Prob my .40 since it will be on my hip already and my Winchester lever in .45 Colt. (I dont have my AR outta layaway yet  )

I just checked 'Sportsman Guild' and ALL of their .22 ammo is on backorder. I was surprised by the price increase! Granted; I haven't purchased it 'by the case' since we were shooting competition, but still, there was some serious sticker shock! I never really purchased other rounds in bulk until the last few years, so I don't have any comparison as far as what's considered normal... I'd say the .22 ammo has a little more than doubled in price since the mid-90's. Sound right?

doubled? i used to buy 22 LR for a dollar a box now its 10 bucs a box,,
