Geeze, noisy bike!

Have had my Dragon for about 2 1/2 years.  I have profound hearing loss, and can't wear my hearing aids in my full face, and don't wear them in my half helmet.  Today I was in a rush and threw my 1/2 on loosely and kept my hearing aids in.  Holy moly, these bikes are noisy.  I couldn't get over how much the transmission whine sounded just the like an old school bus transmission.   

Although I sure liked the way the 2BR 6 into 2 sounded.......

I think the tranny whine has something to do with the way the gears are cut...

"Square Cut" or something like that??

I'm sure one of the mechanical guys on here can explain it.

Yes, because of the square cut.  Before today, I've only heard it a little between 45-55, and not so bad.  Was just surprised at how loud they are.

Yeah... I know what you mean.  My Triumph tripple tranny is whisper quiet while the Valk tranny whines like crazy. 

On the same note... I had a BMW R1200C (boxer twin).  Now, that transmission was even MORE noisy than the Valkyrie!!!  It would drown out the engine at times!!!

I have them (about 6 mos.) and it's a joy to remove them just prior to listening to the "honey-do" list", learned that from Steve

I changed to a full synthetic 15/50 oil.  It made a huge difference in my tranny noise.  Oh crap, now I've done it.  Started the whole oil thing again.  Sorry.

Really, my 2012 Rocket III Touring is just as noisy as my Valk. But, it has square cut gears too so they are simular. Doesn't bother me though I'm used to it. (no oil thread please) Also seems to depend on the oil I run. Lighter oil more noise and just the opposite as well. I run nothing but Rotella 15 x 40 and Mobil 1 Syn oil. Both work well except for the wallet difference.

Way back when i had a 54 Ford with that 300 inch straight 6 that was blowing and dripping oil EVERYWHERE. To go 50 or 60 miles required 2 quarts of oil. That stuff just inside the door of my local J & L station in the glass jars was my burn of choice. That was also my first engine rebuild.  Thanks for bringing that memory back.  RIDE SAFE.

I had a 63 Ford Fairlane with I think it was a 170 straight 6 in it? Thing blew more oil than it ever used. The only reason I posted was because the only oil I used was in those glass bottles with the spout in a wire rack.....does that give my age away? In the winter they used to shove one of those blue or pinkish paper towels at the full service pumps in the end of the bottle to keep the snow out. FULL SERVICE?

Did it use that much oil  BEFORE or AFTER you rebuilt the engine..
