A new addition to the Meyer fleet. Handy for running stuff around and as a backup for all our aging cages...

Little V6, fuel injected, gets great mileage. Runs and drives fine.

I bought a cheap Ford Ranger last Summer for my son (first car) and I've been fixing something new on it almost every week.

Heck...I put $60 worth of gas in it! Increased the truck's value by 20%!

300 bucks can't go wrong for a late 80's S-10.  My guess is a little V6 is the 2.8L vs. the mighty powerful 4.3L V6, but don't see how it gets very good mpg since my brother had exact same chevy s-10 bought new in 1988 and lucky to get 21-22 mpg is about it.  Not very powerful as well and engine leaked oil all over (bad gaskets) before 100K on it.  Ir ran but that was about it.

Daniel Meyer

It's a '91.

4.3 liter v6 I think.

Fuel injected is probably why it gets the mileage. Seems to be around 26 in the couple hundred miles I did today...(LOTS of errands and one long commute!)

If it's a 4.3 you got one heck of a deal.. junk 4.3 motors around here are $300. I've had maybe 15 or more S10's , 2.5 4 cyl, 2.8 and 4.3's. I will never again own one with a 2.8 no matter how nice its.  The 4.3's have good power and decent mileage, our 97 GMC has gotten as good as 25.

You know you're a redneck when the Kelly Blue book goes up and down with the amount of fuel in the tank.

Agree,  I bought a 1996 chevy S-10 ext. cab 4.3L V6 2wd and was a great engine and very powerful achieving around 23-24 avg. mpg not too shabby better mpg and a lot more power than the defuncked 2.8L V6.  Good motor, so-so body but well worth 300 bucks if engine runs good.

Nice. You don't find em like that in Indiana much. Usually the road salt has ate holes in them large enough to throw a cat through.  :'(

A very good buy Daniel.   For $300 you can't go wrong, you can junk it out for more than ya got in it.

I have been working on and testing vehicles with the 4.3L V6 in them for over 17 years.  I have pulled a 7000lb trailer behind a full size 4.3L pickup on the Dragon (the guy who set the trucks up on that trip hooked the wrong trailer to the truck, they are only rated to pull 5000#).  It was a little sluggish, but pulled it no problem.  Point is, I have never had ONE engine failure in those 17 years.  Granted, we usually only put about 60,000 miles on them before we sell or scrap them, but that is because we have to start working on the next model year.  Over the years they have evolved through Throttle body injection, Sequential central port injection, and port fuel injection.  The fuel injection system is usually the weak link, but with proper maintenance and a little Techron once in a while, no worries.

The new Gen5 V6 is even more impressive, Al block and heads, direct injection and Active Fuel Management.  Tows very well.

Yah, GM royally screwed up going with the wimpy and very loud 5 cylinder in the coloroda/canyon that replaced the S-10 4.3L V6.   My opinion, but GM also messed up getting rid of the reliable, extremely fuel efficient, and somewhat powerful 3.8L V6 in the impala, lesabre, park avenue lineup by going with 3.5L or 3.9L V6 engines that don't get any better gas mileage and in my opinion, not as reliable.  That is technology for you??  Now GM is going by the way not only of Government Motors but CM = China Motors.

A friend of one runs a service company and ranthe s 10 4.3. He ran them for 400,000 plus miles. He sold one to my son in law for one dollar it had 423000 on it and he drove it for two year to work I'd say you got a good deal.

I've been lookin for an S10 just like that for the small block sittin in my garage

I have had LOTS of them.  3 blazers, and 2 pick-ups.  One lifted standard cab.  The ONLY NEW vehicle I have ever had, and another that was the 4 door version.  Plus, I had a boat that had 2 different 4.3 liter engines in them.  Not it's fault, I let it FREEZE.  :-\

They are very solid, and dependable.  Not too fuel efficient, but an S-10 is a real truck.  I need to scan some pics of my 92 that was lifted.  I LOVED that little truck.

Good Deal! I know you plan on using it as a glorified wheel barrow, but if you do plan on keeping in nice or needing body parts etc. LMC truck has a noce catalog for all the parts an pieces. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cst/t.aspx You can almost build a second one from all the crap they've got here.  (Not affiliated yada yada, just happy with their stuff.)

Contrary to what some here think :) (given the dirt usually on my Valk) I DO tinker and maintain my stuff in pretty much as top condition as I can.

Hey Daniel,

What do you mean "when it gets wonky"? If it gets any more wonky we may have trouble surviving it.

BTW, I agree that $300 is a great deal, and that the 4.3 is one of GMs better motors.  :cooldude:
The key thing is to wake up breathing! All the rest can be fixed. (Except Stupid - You can't fix that)

Q: When does 6.25% of $300 equal $135?
A: When the State of Texas does the calculation.

Must be that new math...

Texas has a 6.25 % sales tax on used vehicles.

The problem is...when the sale is between individuals, the sales tax is not assessed on the sale price, but rather, it's assessed on some random price the state pulls out of its ass for your particular car. This magic number value is not adjusted for the actual sale price or condition or any other pricing factors. Running. Not. Smashed. Restored. Doesn't matter. That model, that price.

They call this debacle the "presumptive value tax".

So, basically, I paid 45% sales tax on my new-to-me little truck.

How is this fair?

Its not fair...its the government.  And the ones to thank are the liars that have historically bought a used car for $2000 and lied and told the DMV it only cost $300 to save on tax.  You would never do that but believe it or not lots of others try it all the time

Here's a little test you can do, to make sure its a really good truck.

LOL! You're so fortunate the federal government hasn't adopted that tactic.

IRS guy:  "Mr. Meyer I know you told us what you said you made, but you look like one of those obscenely wealthy people to me.  We're only going to tax you at the 12% rate, but we'll apply it to your presumptive income of 1.5 million dollars."

The state of Wa did that to me when I bought the wifes 97 Jimmy..paid 2700 and they charged me tax on 4700. I was so teed off, I sent an email to the Dept. Of Licnensing complaining about it.
Told them I spent a year looking for a special deal, found this rig needing work and bought it. Actually got a reply telling me to take the estimates for the repairs needed and send them a copy. About 3 month later I got a check back for $285 bucks.  So, it true when they say the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
