Well, I know noone asked but Id like to throw in my two cents.  (maybe worth less) as Willow says may be worth even less than you paid for it.

I think Humanity on a whole is decling as far as morality, integrity and how we care for each other.  America right along with the rest of the world has shared in this delcine in my opinion.

Is America the greatest country in the world.  I still have to say yes.  Are we the smartest people (book smart wise)?  No.  Are we the smartest eaters?  No.  The list can go on and on.  There are a lot of things other people in other parts of the world do better than us.   That neither makes them great or makes us less great

BUT, let me ask you this.  To which country do more people risk their lives to come to?  To which country to more people on the planet owe more to for aid and assistance in times of trouble?

America is great because of AMERICANS.  What my generation said of some of the the previous generations was they were the Greatest generation of Americans and they had (we still have) the American spirit.  

America is still the greatest, despite our reprobate (lately) government.   The government doesnt go to war...the American soldier (Airman,Marine etc) does.  When the chips are down you want to see an American coming to help.  All across the globe people know if an American sets his mind and heart to help you...there will be help.

Yes American society is declining on many fronts.  Its a "Me" generation right now, but guess what.  If you are comparing us to the rest of the world, then you grade on a curve and from what I have seen we are still above the curve as far as whatever moral decline we can see.

America is not great because we have a great president or a government that has all the answeres.  Seems the government has no answers lately and is most of our problems.  

We are a great nation OF PEOPLE because we have never lost sight (as a people) that what is more important than a new car or a big house or lots of cash was the fact that I may be able to help somoene out.  

Americans help more people from the widow next door to a refugee thousands of miles away than any other people on the planet.

Love your neigbor as yourself.  Is the second of the two greatest commandments we have from the God that our forfathers declared was the source of our freedom and liberty.

Even people that do not claim to worship Him, prove the validity and importance of that second commandment by doing it everyday.

The day we truly extinguish the influence of the God that created us from our borders and actually forget the two greatest commandments there are...the first being to love God with all you have.

Then we will cease to be the greatest country.

BTW.  I believe angels are real!

I posted that because he brought up a lot of good points and I didn't know the source was from an HBO series-not that that mattered.  I also would never give up on America or those who fought to preserve our rights! Believe me, there is no other country I would rather live in.

But what the responder hit upon gives a warning that if we stay on our current path, there is no way we will remain the leader, especially due to outsourcing and of people in power giving away our technology and trade secrets.

I always dislike the whole "greatest country in the world" debate. Why is it even important? It's the wrong way to think in my mind. I think we should concentrate on our problems here at home, revive the economy, build more stuff here again, with higher quality, and accept to pay a little more for it, and put everything into becoming energy independent within the next 15 years. That is an achievable goal, given all the oil and gas we can now economically go after in the Dakotas and other areas.

A recent european study on the world supply of energy, and particularly the effects of using fracking and its impact on the global energy supply, concluded that the US might be completely energy independent within 10 to 15 years. The impact on the world could be dramatic. US interests in the middle east would decline, and China would have to secure the political situation down there themselves. They are freeloaders right now, but that would change. China is currently not capable of doing anything like that, their army is so far behind it's not funny. The study further concluded that energy independence would be a significant boost to the american economy. Think of the money we could be saving if we did not have to buy all that oil. The report concluded that the long term trend in the US is up, not down. With all the negative news about the decline of this country, it was a real refreshing read.

One more thing. EVERY generation talks about moral decline, and how everything used to be better. We are becoming a more urban society, a highly specialized labor force that moves to the cities. In the cities, you lose personal touch with your neighbors, and you go down the spiral of everyone caring for themselves. That is sad, true. But many things have changed for the better in the last 50 years. 50 years ago not everyone could even use the same restrooms, or seats on a bus. We live in tough times, but so did many generations before us. I'm not sure I'd like to switch living in our time for any other time. I like the internet, and the technology we have access to. I like affordable traveling to distant places, the amount of free time we have, the advances in science and longer lives we can live based on medial achievements. We need to get more done here, and less overseas, and let's not get dragged into any more wars far from home.

The end of the world? Not anytime soon.

Well said Chris.  We may not be number one in many areas anymore but there is no place I would rather be than America.  Everytime I take a cross country trip, I am reminded what a great country we live in, dispite all our problems.

Chris, you nailed it.  Like many others on this board, I have been in several other countries, but the good old USA is where I wanna be. Years ago, everywhere I had been, the people took notice of an American and it was like you were on a platform. It's like that still in many places. Sure, we are hated by our enemies, but you look at the ones who want to be free and out from under tyranny and yeah, they are in awe of America and Americans. Now days, with television, some people think we are all movie stars and live in Hollywood and dress and act like the goons on all of these shows they see, but if you work with the people, they see someone special in Americans. I still go to El Salvador every year working with my brothers in Christ down there and they love us like we are angels, even in the airport, we have been stopped and asked what we are doing here and they tell us thank you and go with God. It is very humbling in deed. We are a blessed nation still and there are so many good people doing what is good and right and trying to live by the Golden Rule. So, yes, I believe we are still a great nation and a leader in the world when it comes to standing up and doing what is right,. Like someone said, the people, the veterans, the ones in the armed forces, they are the do'ers and movers that get things done.
Now our guv'mnt leaders on the other hand, well, I am ashamed of them
