Maybe I misread it, but I took Tx Bohemian's comment to mean the thought of Joe Biden being one heartbeat from the presidency is far more frightening than the thought of Sarah Palin being one heartbeat away from the presidency...

I saw this about biden when I was getting my "fox fix" this morning and he actually says if there is an intruder  attempting to break in to get a "Double barrell" shotgun and to fire two rounds off your porch, or something like that.

After this statement if there is a somewhat "smart" crook attempting to break in and he hears two shotgun blasts he will realize that you've got an empty gun now and it'll take a bit to reload!
And that's if you've got shells handily close by!

Is this right or am I off in left field with my thinking?
I realize that the term "smart crook" may be an oxymoron...

Probably, but as I stated, if the shells are handy.
But we're also calmly sitting here at a computer using our head and having time to think about it.

In a burgulary situation the anxiety would be much higher to where you'd probably grab the gun run out to the back porch and fire off a couple of rounds and then think, "dang, I should've brought more shells with me!!"

While I was working at LGA in New York the news reported some gang members threatened a home owner.  He fired a warning shot outside his home.  Detectors in the area localized his shot and dispatched the police.  Seems to me he was in some trouble for the shots.  Now Biden's wife might not have the same issues common folk face in the same situation.  We get all the law we can afford.

That said maybe I should get a shotgun, as directed by the VP USA.

EXACTLY Joe's point.  He WANTS you to be standing there with an empty gun in your hands. Remember - he's all about gun control - not your safety.  Might as well be holding your Johnson.  WAIT that might be more effective, particularly if the thug is gay and thinks it's an offer.  Reminds me of the scene in The Unforgiven when Little Bill is explaining what really happened at English Bob's legendary killing of Two-Gun Corcoran, whose Walker Colt blew up and and all he had left was his big dick to fill his uninjured other hand - and the cowardly Duck of Death thus blew his unarmed and injured rival away:
