Cliff

trying to stir up interest in the shared rental of house for Sturgis 2014.  Sleeps approx 18-20 people.  $3300 for the week divided up amonst the 18-20.  So for 18 people it would be about $183 per person.... price already includes taxes and cleaing fees.  Got 6 signed up so far.... My eldest daughter living in NC is the "booking agent" for this, it is for her husbands birthday ,, another item off of his bucket list ....The dates are check in  August 4th through check out August 9th 2014.

If interested contact Jenn at  ohmersucher@hotmail.com  ASAP.... trying to get the number of people going  soon... many places require an upfront deposit and don't want to put a deposit on place that is larger than we need.

The original plan was for the few of us to rent a small place (avoiding motels) and splitting up the cost amongst us.  After some thought it seemd to me that this would be a great opportunity to gather together some Valkyrie riders to join us, this meant that if some joined us we would need to  move the reservation to larger accomodations still sharing cost among all.

Tina I are both going.

UPDATE BELOW HERE......(INFO MY DAUGHTER SENT TO POST HERE)
My name is Jenn(ifer). I am Cliff's daughter and I will be your coordinator from start to finish if you choose to join this little band of riders! I am very very well traveled (both domestic and abroad) and leave no stones unturned in planning or deal hunting! I am a rider myself as is my husband. I can be reached at ohmersucher@hotmail.com  for any questions you may have. Below is all the information I have on this trip. I have been working on it for months so I have been in contact with dozens of property owners and managers already.

The rent will be evenly divided among the attendees. The average cost of a 5 bedroom rental will be 3300-3800 dollars with average sleeping accommodations being 16-22. Some more, some less. Varies from house to house along with the individual property's minimum rental period requirements. All houses require a cleaning fee that ranges from 50-150 dollars not included in rental cost. Many of them have 2-3 bedrooms set up for single sleeping (meaning queen or king bed only/private room) with the remaining bedrooms being set up with multiple beds (dorm style, multiple twins/doubles, bunk beds etc). This is my husband's 40th birthday trip so I hope it goes without saying that we will be in the master bedroom (plus I am doing all the legwork, I hope I will have earned it!) Nearly all the houses have sleeper sofas and the like as well. I am thinking the most fair way to decide who gets the remaining private bedrooms would be based on couples. If there are multiple couples, older people get rank. Just how I was raised. RHIP = rank has its privileges. Beyond that, I will leave it up to you all to decide. We are trying to only consider houses with large hot tubs for obvious reasons. Also, trying to only consider those with garages to park our bikes. Covered parking will do but certainly garage parking is much preferred. All houses we have been looking at are intentionally located in the Deadwood/Lead areas rather than Sturgis SD simply because they are very cool little towns and away from the noise/crowds but still only 20 minutes or less leisurely ride time from Sturgis proper. The closer you get to Sturgis the more dramatically the prices unreasonably skyrocket. I will be booking the houses hopefully by the end of April (providing I have the down payment in hand) because houses are already being snapped up for 2014. I have spoken to quite a few property owners that are even booked for 2015 so the quicker I get this settled the better off we will be. I can increase the size of the home I am looking for if need be based on how many affirmative respondents I have. The largest house I have found so far is 8 bedrooms/sleeps 35 (blows my mind. That's BIG!). I also have a few properties that are neighboring that can be rented together. But, as with everything for the trip, it all hinges on attendance.

We will have truck/trailer/mechanic on the ride with us for any "incidentals". People are welcome to ride or follow in their own truck/trailer as they see fit. We (the family riders) are also planning on bunking for hotels along the way thereby reducing the cost of rooms. I am able to utilize my corporate discounts so I can get rooms cheaper than a lot of people can. I would recommend you do so as well.  I am handling the logistics of the entire trip so once I have a solid idea of how many riders I will be coordinating, I will begin the route planning (and rally points in the case of out of state join ups)  and hotel/motel stops to book those in advance. We are targeting an 8-9 hour ride day so as not to over tax any of the riders on the trip. That is a safe span and keeps us in daylight the entire time for rider safety. Our plan (from our state, NC) is to leave Friday morning August 1st, 2014. Riders in the area and points east should meet at the rally point to be decided upon at a later date. It will be planned to be central to all coming in to that rally point. That departure puts us in arrival range no later than Monday August 4th, first day of rally and check in date. Departures from Sturgis will be completely up to the individual participants and their needs. No proration for early departure will be provided as houses have minimum rental times. It's up to the rider  to utilize the rental period fully.

Because I will be monetarily fronting the majority of this trip until it is actually underway and cost will be reflective of the number of those who have confirmed their attendance, I would have to require any riders joining to lay in a  50% good faith deposit once the house is decided upon. (meaning 50% of what their portion would be so that I can pay the security deposit and 50% down payment to reserve the property, hotels etc). Otherwise, there will be no way I can shoulder the reservation costs alone (I can JUST swing the money for a 3 bedroom but anything bigger taps me out. I am paying for my daughter to go to Peru for school exchange program this year and my mom's birthday trip to Ireland so I am "broker than broke" lol). I'm good but I am not that good. Deposits would be made through PayPal so this way they are trackable traceable and provide a certain measure of security to both parties (this also permits credit card payments not afforded by any other means of payment). I will eat the PayPal fees with no penalty to the rider. The balance of the payment to be made by March 31st, 2014. I will provide the house details as soon as I have a solid number so I can decide on the house size and begin negotiations with the appropriate home owners. House details to include a link to the property's webpage and the final negotiated cost I have been given from the home owner/property managers. This will allow the interested parties to review the accommodations in detail prior to committing. I will need a solid commitment within 2 weeks of the house details being shown to the prospective riders. That's all the time I can get from most owners to hold without cash deposit. After that they will release it back into the wild for anyone to snap up. Anyone who pays their deposit will then be required to join the Facebook event page in order to ensure that they receive all trip broadcasts. Those without Facebook accounts will be added to an email mailing list but facebook will always have the most current information.

To address anyone interested in riding with us that are camping types that would not want to pay the cost of sharing the house: We can allow tent camping on most properties on a limited number basis. Since properties charge a per person rate in addition to base house rental cost, the only amount that would be charged to prospective campers would be the per person per day rate (and this has been ranging between $20-40 per day on these properties). Campers would have full access to the house and would be expected to clean up after themselves outside as appropriate. Camp fires would be permitted only insofar as the property would allow. That would be addressed at arrival. I cannot allow them to camp for free because I have no intention of fibbing to the homeowners. I will provide a fully accurate headcount and as a result will be charged accordingly.

When and where? Not that I'm interested since we are campers. Maybe we can meet up for a few. I'm a poor house guest anyway!  :D

Hmmmm... I've been thinking of making a trip there this summer, but just suffered a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder.  I will have to wait and see how that progresses or if surgery is warranted etc.  That would be a great way to get housing there.

What are the room configurations/arrangements etc.... more details if possible.

I wouldn't mind hearing a few more details myself. Never been there.

..

I visited Sturgis the same way in 2005 following Dana's post about a shared house on this forum.

We were in a house in Spearfish away from the central madness.

Crossed it off my bucket list .

The local rides are spectacular if you can avoid the LARGE groups of wobbly "bikers" taking in the scenery.

Figure $100 a day. That what I do and its pretty fair. I start saving the day we return with left over Sturgis money, it there is any.  ;D Last yr I went solo and only spent $800 cash. This was a 8 State tour also. In 06 I went out with $500 and barley made it home. It was a trip I needed and will always be my best.

My biggest problem is I keep buying cars and motorcycles then have no $$ to play, lol.  If I'm lucky and get rid of one or two .... well, who knows.........but I'll get there sooner or later.

I can thoroughly recommend going to Sturgis if you've never been.

You can keep away from most of the madness and go ride somewhere new every day.

But a visit to Main St and a couple of the event saloons is worthwhile just for the experience.

The even is spread over many towns with many bikers never even going to Sturgis itself.

Do some Googleing to check out rides etc.

Here's just a few of the most popular

http://www.sturgismotorcyclerally.com/travel-services/scenic-maps.php

http://sturgiszone.com/sturgis-motorcycle-rally.html

The ride there from Atlanta was great. Even riding across the grasslands was eye opening. All I could think of was all the riders going by Interstare and missing some of the outstanding natural beauty of the USA.

Camp fires would be permitted only insofar as the property would allow.

There will be a fire ban in effect for the weeks up to and after Sturgis. Esp if you are in the Hills.

Hello guys! This is Cliff's daughter Jenn (hence my super clever handle  8) ) Just wanted to pop in to provide some updates. We figured it would be easier if I just registered to post here myself. Rental dates are now firm with an August 4th (Monday) check in and August 9th (Saturday) check out.

Hey fudgie....where did you find that data? I have been looking everywhere trying to find Sturgis restrictions/rally rules/laws and have come up empty. Tried the stugis city official page, sturgis rally page, and even the Forest Service page. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

From going out for the last 9yrs!  ;D Never seen them permit a fire during rally time. Its usually dry out there and with the pine beetle infestation killing off the pines its worse. I guess they, forest agency/State, decided its best to ban open burning. Which makes sense with that many people out there. There are forest/wildland fires out there every yr which is kinda neat to watch.  ??? Now there are ways around it. 2 yrs ago it was cold, into the 40's, and we used a propane burner, which was allowed. It was like a 10" self contained fire ring, not much but kept a few of us warm.
Last year you were not permitted to smoke at your camp sight. Had to go up and smoke at the office.

I would send a e-mail to the forest service and ask but I'm a 100% sure there will be a ban.
If I can help in any other ways let me know.
Hope to see you out there!  :cooldude:

C'mon you Valkyrie riders.

Just do it.

I'd love to see 10 or 12 Valkyries rolling down main street Sturgis in a slow non duck foot waddling procession.

When I rode out to Sturgis with Coot in 2005 he said it made him laugh to see me overtake a slow pack of 20 to 30 H-D's cause he could see and smell the cloud of unbunrt gas vapor billowing out of my "98 Standard as I went W.O.T. and ripped by them.

Just another quick update for you guys. I now have 6 serious interested parties from this forum in addition to our original group. I have also narrowed down my house choices from 21 to 12. I am on track to have the house rental secured before the end of the month so the window of opportunity to hop on this band wagon is getting smaller and smaller. 2 of the houses at the top of my list have been booked out from under me in the last week so, as you can see, time is of the essence. I cannot delay beyond the end of the month or risk losing the ones I have ear marked. If you are mulling it over, mull faster or you may miss the chance at an awesome ride, the stay in an awesome house, meeting some great people and making some priceless memories!  :cooldude:

Update time again! I now have the field of options narrowed down to 3. 2 of the 3 will leave ample room for any late comers while the 3rd option will only allow 2-3 extras.

#1 is a 3 story 5 bedroom, 3 bath in a nature setting (sleeps 15 comfortably with pull outs and futons in addition to the bedrooms) with pool table, foosball table, fireplace, wrap around porch. Its gorgeous (not to mention 4 of the 5 bedrooms have king sized beds). Its in the Terry Peak area approx 20 miles from Sturgis and 8 miles from Deadwood. It does not have a garage. That's the only drawback, however, there are ways to work around that.

#2 is a 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath (sleeps 12 comfortably, 14 a little less comfortably) located in downtown Spearfish (15 mins from Sturgis via interstate). Walking distance to Spearfish chain businesses. 5-7 blocks to bars/pubs/non chain eateries. Fireplace but no hot tub or other goodies like the first one has but it has a 34'x22' garage (=huge).

#3 is a 4 bedroom, 2 bath in a nature setting (sleeps 11-12) fire place, hot tub, garage, several large screens, gas fire pit. 20-30 minutes to Sturgis.

All three are super close in price so its looking like the cost per person is going to be $460. The two I really wanted that were comparably sized but cost less have been rented already so these listed here are the next ones up in price but still keeping size and comfort. I am going to have to make a decisions next week because all three of these have had other inquiries and I don't want to lose out yet again! This serves as final call for interested parties. Late comers will be permitted HOWEVER, on a VERY limited and select basis since I have to book on the number I have not the number I might have. I found some AMAZING ones (for instance, inground heated pool anyone? :o ) that I would have jumped on if I had about 10 more people! Some gorgeous properties out there! Stay tuned for the next update!

Let the unveiling begin! The house has been decided on. Please click the link to see pictures of the house. Here is the description: 5 bedroom, 3 bath, sleeps 15-16. This executive-style cabin has just been updated with some wonderful new amenities! There are 5 bedrooms, 4 have KING-size beds and the 5th bedroom has a bunk bed with full on the bottom and twin on the top. There is also a futon in the Master bedroom and a futon in the loft. The cabin has 3 full baths with a jacuzzi tub in the Master Bathroom.

The lower level family room is now a spacious game room with pool table, foosball table and flat screen TV. The family room also has a queen-size sofa sleeper. The main living area is still open to the kitchen and dining room with a gas fireplace and now has a large flat-screen TV and satellite!

Other amenities include the Full Kitchen, washer & dryer, Hot Tub, BBQ grill on the deck and all-new linens, towels and kitchenwares.

Central Air Conditioning
Propane BBQ Grill
Deck with Hot Tub
Gas Fireplace
Jacuzzi Tub in Master Bathroom
Game Room with Pool and Foosball

There is not a garage however, we will be bringing our heavy duty (very durable and adjustable hieght canvas canopy which can completely shelter 4 bikes. I will consider buying another one though they run about $150. We will also have a support vehicle as well as a trailer. This property DOES has a gravel lead in (driveway) but I have spoken at exhausting length with the property manager and have been informed that it was recently graded and hard packed and will be again before next years rally so she does not anticipate any problems nor have there been any problems with groups in the past. I am easily the "greenest" rider on this trip and I am comfortable with the driveway after having spoken to her.

Pictures are here: http://s243.beta.photobucket.com/user/sucherwoman1/library/Sturgis

Price per person is $460. We currently only have 8 confirmed heads. One of the confirmed persons has indicated he may have one more possibly two coming but I can only work in absolutes for pricing purposes. So, unless others confirm, $460 it is. There is room for 7 more and if any late comers sign on and make their deposit, the the remaining amount due from the original 8 will be reduced to reflect the change in per person rate. My paypal payment address (to use for your 50% deposit) is sucherwoman1@aol.com. When sending your deposit, please include your name (along with the names of anyone else you are paying for), your forum name, address, phone number so that I can properly track payments made and payments needed. I will be putting the deposit down on this property on 03/29/2013. If I have enough monies paid before that, I will be paying the deposit the second I have it. I have no desire to have this one rented out from under me! Please email me if you have any questions at all. I am very quick to reply to any emails. Thanks guys and I look forward to this adventure!

We have had one more rider join up!  :cooldude: That has dropped the price per person down to $406. The next person that joins us will have the per person rate drop to $365. Anyone who has already paid the deposits can adjust the remaing deposit accordingly. I will of course be sending out updates on final payment amount when those come due. I just wanted to let everyone know where we are at with amounts especially those on the fence about coming so they can see what we are currently at! We have room for 3 more. 2 spots are being held for friends of the family who can not commit right now. They may be released at a later date but right now, free and clear, we have 3 more spots open.

ANYONE THAT HAS NOT PAID THEIR DEPOSITS: PLEASE remember that I need that money no later than 03/29/2013 in order to secure this house! I have to pay 50% of the total rental cost in order to have the reservation completed.

2 more sign ups (a married couple)! We are nearly out of unreserved room for this trip. 1 (2 possible, please inquire for the stipulations) Per person rate is now at $335. As I mentioned before, I am holding two slots open for family friend's who can not commit this early due to work restrictions in addition to what I still have publicly open. Once the current spots are closed, the door for newcomers will be closed as well. If the two spots that are being held for the family friends are not taken, I will release them for anyone to lay claim to but that will likely not happen until next summer. So, this is your last best chance to secure a place in the house if you are interested. The only other chance will be if those other 2 being held are released. But thats only if the family friends do not take them.
