Choke lever won't stay down

Any tips on keeping the choke slide lever down. It creeps up on its own. I sprayed it with WD-40 and it got worse. Thanks.

It only needs to stay down for start up. It should not be on just to warm up the motor. If you need the chock for more than starting, you may have a tuning/carb problem.

I know that sounds like a stupid question, but these choke levers are known to slide down and then seem to stop, and if pushed a little firmer will go past that point to the actual bottom of the stroke.
Several people have had problems in the past with not getting it all the way engaged. Especially when buying a machine that has sat that lever can need a period of adjustment...that is to say it needs a period for you to learn how to push it without breaking it.

I was in that "gotta be gentle with my new valk" club the first cold January morning I rode the bike to work.  It took me a minute to realize it would push further.


Just an option.  If it's not all the way engaged it might slide up.

Thanks guys. I've had the bike for 8 years and the problem just started. It's a minor annoyance. The choke slide is not for the weak of thumb. It's tuned and purring along otherwise.

mine started doing the same thing when i put to much lube on it.

 does your bike have handle bar risers? if it does I think you have stretched the cable a little bit...see if when you turn your handle bars right or left if that is what is causing the choke to return....if it is make sure your cable is not clipped into stays on handle bars

Replaced my choke cable from the lever down to the left carb bank.  Original one was so hard to engage it finally popped the end right off the cable.

I thought - " I'll lube that cable and the plastic slide at the handlebar so I won't break the new one "  - you know where this is going......

I push it down and hold it now to start, since it won't stay down.  There needs to be a certain amount of friction for this one to work correctly.  There is no mechanical means of locking the choke or tightening the strain on the cable. 

The bottom line - Don't over lube! - Or lube at all, if it doesn't need it.  This could be the cable or the handlebar actuator piece.
