it was my first day on the job where I work now.....work for the local County Govt. as a Landscape Crewleader for Downtown Athens, GA.......lost a promotion that I had worked hard for at the 10 yr. mark for mostly political reasons......pissed me off so bad, I didn't let them forget it for 6 months.....probably the reason I was passed over again a couple of years ago for the only other Supervisor's job.....it was in ROW's.....and the  guy they hired from the outside for that one has already been suspended on two separate occasions......for 2-3 days at a time with no pay......he sure hasn't set much of an example for the guys working for him......so much for hard work, education, loyalty, and good work ethic/ethics....it sure as hell didn't help me..... :(

I'm confused, did you quit your previous sucky non-promoted job and work for a different company or what?

Get use to being passed up, that is the American way.  Happens all the time.
If you are not so far up the bosses wahoo,  you don't get too far although they all know you work the hardest and get the most done in the most efficient manner.

I get thanked near weekly from the fellow co-workers for such a great job and everyone knows it and I fill in as needed on several workstations in the office and yet am the lowest paid of most of the office staff.  Not saying I am great and not replaceable, but I show up for work and do whatever is needed and get it done correctly the first time around.

I found another job last April and was going to take the job offer although further driving distance and told my current boss screwing over her employees and got a 1.50 per hour raise so rightfully deserved.  I decided to stay but can guarantee you if that offer for 1.00 more per hour came along again somewhere else , I'd be outta there had enough of all the B.S.ing going on.  I highly doubt they would offer another 1.00 per hour to stay being tight wads, but I'd give them the opportunity to match the new job offer if it ever comes about again, but doubt they will, let them suffer I could care less.

Way to stay positive aye???   :tickedoff:

I'm still at this job....love most of it and get paid pretty good even though we didn't get any raises 4 of the last 5 years......I was making about 3K more/yr than the guy who was promoted back 7 yrs ago.....even though he'd been here 5 years longer than me at that time.....

Stanley, you are going to have to let go of the bitterness about being passed over. That will only keep eating at you for as long as you think about it. A man has only so much energy, and can choose to use it either for positive things, or to have negative thoughts.

I've been where you are , and had un-diagnosed terrible headaches. Several Docs told me they thought I had a brain tumor. One Doc asked the right questions and found that my problems were all due to tension. I left that company, took a couple of weeks of vacation, and no more headaches!

You've posted about this same thing about a year ago I would guess. You're definitely not over it, and unless you do, it'll keep eating at you. Good luck!!

I had a city job in Garrison Tx. Pay wasn't to awful bad but i needed something local as my oldest boy was acting out. I had to get off the road to help out with him. Anyhow within a couple months of hiring on i was replacing the old iron pipe gas lines with the orange plastic pipe. Had to attend a school for that pipe AND be certified by the state of Texas to do the heat welding on said pipe. They hired a local resident after my supervisor quit. I trained the supervisors replacement-he became supervisor and got the bigger pay check. Got my oldest boy straightened out and went back on the road. Small town politics SUCK. Course being a Yankee in East Texas and"not knowing my place"according to that drunk ass mayor we had-well enough was enough.   :uglystupid2: RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.

I've only had 2 jobs in my life...28 years as a  :police:  (retired) and 32 years in the fire service. Currently chief of the same fire department my grandfather was chief of, pretty cool for me at least. I like(d ) both my jobs, did both at one time,  but hate politics. Leave me alone and let me do my job. Don't like something I'm doing, be a man and come through the door and tell me, don't wander around behind my back. If you can't come into my office and have a decent disagreement or discussion with resolution to a suspected problem, go away. Act like a person for cryin out loud. If ya can't do any of that, I don't have time.

Over the past forty years or so I've been passed by a few times when I was certain I was the right man for the job.  I've also been recognized for my performance when I was pretty sure I should've done better.

As I've matured (sort of) I've come to believe that I am, possibly we are, seldom in possession of a truly accurate assessment of my own or our own value to the organization.

I further believe that when I've reacted to a missed promotion with bitter criticism I have, in fact, confirmed the wisdom of those who made the decision.  Bitterness and criticism just don't go with real loyalty.

I've been fortunate in my career in that I've usually gotten better than I deserve and my financial needs have always been provided for although I have often been dissatisfied with my employment.

I have been working for the federal government in Canada for the past twenty years  I have been past over for many jobs mainly because I can't speak french very well.  It used to bother me but I have learned to live with it.  I tried taking language courses but I guess my head is too thick to learn the language.  I am in a position now where I am just biding my time until retirement.  I do enjoy the position I am in today because everyday is something new and I make pretty good coin doing it.  I remember a job I went for about 15 years ago for the Canadian gov't.  It was located in Houston Texas.  I fit the job requirements perfectly.  The only thing I was missing was to be fluently bilingual in English and French.  :uglystupid2:  I asked them what the hell do you need to able to speak French in Houston.  Do you guys have a large French population down there?  It turns out that it was to be able to talk to the other French people that work in the workplace.  I guess it was to give the false impression that all Canadians are bilingual.  I think there are more Mandarin speaking people in Canada than French speaking.

Well....one thing I've learned in the last few years, we.....no, I can always count on Willow to give a seemingly good counter argument minus some important details..... but shooting from the hip, it's about what I've come to expect...... ;).......

I don't dwell on the slights from the past nearly as much as you guys imagine I do.....it was just the 17th Anniversary on Monday and it sparked those old feelings from long ago......out of 35 or so employees, 32 of them were behind me back then and indicated that I had gotten  a good old reaming without the benefit of some lubricant of a popular manufacture......my immediate Supervisor has always been and was behind me, but even after they spent 5 years and much $$ giving me extra education/tools for that promotion, some things happened in that last 3 months before the interviews that derailed my "train".....some things that the Big Man had planned didn't happen that caused his house of cards to fall.....mostly on top of me......he admitted it to me a few months later, apologized for not counting my 10 years(at that time) of hard work, dedication and loyalty as much as he should have....came right out and told me that he realized my 70% effort was better than most of other guys 100% efforts......and that he normally would not have let politics affect his decision like it had in that case.......and the real kick to the nether region was that those 2 "political" concerns left the County less than 18 months later.......hindsight is a bitch!......

This new ROW Supervisor has been suspended more times in less than 17 months than I have in 17 years(I've never been suspended)......guy came from the outside, is 55yrs old, has to only have 10 yrs with us to be vested which puts him at his full retirement age....pretty slick math huh?!!..... :cooldude:

I do still enjoy my job......98% of it.....and the pay is ok for what I do....the Wife keeps telling me though that I am going to have to get an office job because I'm not going to make it another 20 years in the mud and blood as hard as I go at it.....she may be right?.... :-\.....well.....maybe if I fall apart, Obummer Care will put the pieces back together?....... :cooldude:
