starter stuck

  Last year I did a cleaning job on my starter switch.  All was good until I noticed the button sticking.  It seemed like it was just the button sticking on the housing, not internal.  So I worked a little grease in and so far it seems to have cured the problem.
The problem is that when the button stuck last time I didn't notice it until after 30 miles of high way running.
How much damage could happen after the starter running at that speed?  Bearings, brushes?

What made you notice after 30 miles of running that you didn't notice when you started the bike to begin with?   

I don't think there is anything you can do to correct any damage that you may have caused already, other than replace it.... but i wouldn't do that until it breaks and not just because it got some wear on it.   After all.... some GW's use the starter under a load to reverse their bike/trike.

It wouldn't have energized unless you were in neutral or pulled the clutch in with it in gear.  Just riding along it wouldn't have done anything.  Chet (Rattlebars) used to hit the starter switch while riding to flash his headlights.

 I gassed up and evidently took off right away. When I stopped at the bottom of the ramp coming
home I could hear it.  That and I couldn't see my lights reflecting in the car ahead of me.  So I was riding without the headlight on also.  
Now I am checking that all the time along with checking to make sure I turned the signals off.

May not be hurt, it probly ran freely after the bike started.  I heard a funny sound as I turned back the throttle it was the starter spinning.   Shut it off and started again, it didn't do it again.  When I got home I cleaned the starter switch(it needed it).  It has not done it again. Hoser.    ???

the starter would not have run unless the clutches pulled in are the bikers in neutral so when you heard it running you probably had the clutch pulled in but when you were riding down the road the starter was not engaged
