cell phone signal in metal buildings

You guys with metal buildings, how do you overcome the lack of cell phone signal? Is there a good, inexpensive outside antenna system?

Inexpensive is in the eye of the beholder! How about the price of two kick-shifters or one hard bag? ~$500

There are also microcell boxes that work with your DSL provider. The boxes are around $150 from AT&T and can be had free if you're persistent enough about your crappy signal.

I am assuming that you still want to walk around with your cell phone. Then a repeater is the only answer and is not cheap. They are available via the Net, various prices.

If you do not mind a stationary phone then a piece of wire running from you cell phone antenna to the outside top of the building is very cheap. Cell phone antenna length is not critical.

But an ungrounded wire to your cell phone is a lightning attractor, so I would not use it during an electrical storm or disconnect it.

If there is one thing I could live without it would be a cell phone.  But my kids want me to have one in case I get lost or something.  I know I won't get lost in a metal building.

Thanks guys. I've been looking at wireless alarm systems and would prefer one that communicates primary through the cell network since it's immune to cut phone lines. Also, texting is a very handy way to communicate when you're running equipment and can't stop to answer the phone or when numbers/times/sizes and like info is involved.

I've heard of people using auto cell amplifiers with external antennas but don't personally know anyone who has done so. I've seen systems which look like they should work priced from $250 on up but I'd like to get it done for less if possible.

I'm running an underground landline and DSL network cable out there from the house anyway but neither can replace the convenience of texting or the safety factor of having a communication device on your belt when you running lathes and other equipment alone.

I'm going to find out if the base unit of the alarm system has a provision for a wired cell antennae. That's a great idea I hadn't thought of.

My wife was like that.  Only wanted a basic phone just to make calls.  Didn't see the need for any new fangled doohickies.  

Then I got her a new fangled smart phone with all the doohickies.  The thing barely leaves her hand now.  I think she's in the other room playing games on it as I type this.
