A GL 1200 with a buddy ......... it needed a stator so out comes the motor. He changed the belts as well while it was out.

All went well till we started it up. Would not stay running unless the choke was on and I have never seen pipes glow red like these. The exhaust sound was off as well ......... sounds horrible!

I think there has been a mistake made putting on the belts. Is it possible for the crankshaft to have turned on him when he took the belts off. I think the fuel is igniting in the exhaust pipe to cause such hi heat.

All the timing marks appear to be correct. On a V-twin they can appear to be correct but on the wrong stroke and that's what I am thinking has happened here.

We're going to be playing with it Friday evening, any suggestions on what to look for would be great!

It sure seems like the cam/valve timing is off. Check it and try to get it right and then do a compression test. Let us know what you find.

Follow the manual. When I changed the belts on my Wings, the cam pulleys both turned, one of them a lot. Quick and easy to fix unless that bent the valves!!!

When I changed the belts on the 85 Aspencade I had didn't need to pull the engine. It was almost out unhooked and turned to the side.
Valker is right the cam pulleys turn I did a bunch of marking so I could return them to the correct position.

Definitely sounds like the timing is off. Red (cherry hot) exhaust sounds to me like the timing is retarded. Could have easily slipped some while changing the belts.

Well, I 'm not sure what to say other than it now runs beautifully!  :)

We put about 5 hours into it last night and we looked at a couple possibilities.............

First off we looked at what's called the "pulse generator" thinking it may not have been put back together with the rotor facing the right direction causing spark at the wrong cylinder but that seemed to only go together one way. We had a heck of a time getting it apart and back together as it's in a very tight space on the rear of the engine.
2nd, was to redo the timing belts and we were careless  :uglystupid2: in the repeat process. Pulled the belts off without looking or marking anything and of coarse everything springs. Finally got everything lined back up the way the book says and ............Varoooomm!!  :cooldude:

Can't really say what made the difference, other than being out a bit with the timing marks the first time the belts were put on.

It dont take much, if you had been off a few more degrees it coulda got real ugly real fast with pistons and valves becoming one.
