Magnacharger and detonation

I'm attempting to tune this Valkyrie w/Magnacharger. Can't stop the pinging from 5K up. The timing is pulled back to 15 degrees @ 5,000 and 13 @ 6. Fueling is as supplied w/the Mikuni. Even pulling the choke on does nothing. Has anyone gotten a blower that is producing too much boost?

If you're lean at high rpm and it's not the advance then it's a combination of both the main, slo-jet and needle position. Have you methodically tuned the SC by following the Mikuni HSR-45 tuning recommendations? I can find the pdf for the HSR-45 and send it to you if you don't have it. Going step-by-step through their procedure did the trick for me.

By the way, I have a Dyna 3000 ignition module, set to curve 3, and wired to a Hobbs switch that's set to take off 10 degrees of advance at 2 psi boost. That said, curve 3 gives 24 degrees advance @ 5K rpm and 28 degrees @ 6K rpm. The Hobbs switch takes off 10 so I'm running 14 degrees @ 5K rpm and 18 degrees @ 6K rpm. I hope this helps.

T.RexRacing

It does. Thanks.

I've never had a bike give me this much grief tuning. And I'm 54 with a few decades tuning hot rods. I've had a turbo'd 'Busa give me less problems.

I was amazed when I got into the supercharged valk I got from Big Mike.  It had a boos gauge, but there was no boost switch, as the Dyna 3000 was not out when it was converted.  Mike was told they had modded the trigger wheel, to retard the ignition.

But, it had a stock OEM trigger wheel.  So, it ran 16,000 miles without any retard on the ignition!  Kind of amazed me!

Put more spring in the clutch, and the carb needed a complete overhaul.  Now runs pretty good.  Probably not as nice as the newest editions, but for an original setup supercharger, it is pretty good.

Got 130 hp with it running like crap, and the carb shot.  Have not had a chance to dyno since, but runs nice.

My god this thing loves fuel! The detonation is almost gone. The main jet is drilled with a #33 drill. One more with a #30 and we should be done. It's wheelying off throttle in first and second now.

What it took to feed the beast. The (oops)left jet is the drilled out jet that came with the kit carb.

I'de be interested in seeing a dyno when you are completed with the project T.Rex. Also, if you have taken pictures during the process of doing this project, it may be a nice article for our tech section... cheers.

T.RexRacing

Sure there's a few photos.

It made 117 HP last week. Should make a few more ponies now that it's being fed properly.

before anyone gets excited about that number our dyno is notoriously conservative. The Mighty ZX-14 only makes 162 HP on it. See here We don't have an EC997 but a properly maintained and calibrated DynoJet 250 is accurate.
If you have to ask.................

I'd love to know what your jet was to start with and the final size as well as the jet needle setting and your final slo-jet selection. Also, beyond the dyno, how the engine performs throughout the rpm range, cold & warm starts, any flat spots, loading up, etc. Please keep up the posts.

T.RexRacing

27.5,needle clip #4,main jet started at .089"/finish at .128". Tried a .140" drill but the jet broke when I installed it.

Very civilized off boost. Stable idle no surging. Only needs the choke from stone cold. All in all a nice bike to ride. It will flat out run from a late model Mustang too. :D

The one drawback is if you tun the key on w/o starting the bike or park on sidestand with it running it overflows the carb from the fuel level setting to keep it from starving on boost.

Yeah, i'm interested in a fresh dyno as well. I would love to supercharge but am concered about the lack of options to retard timing and i don't trust anyone locally to tune it
. My bike was jetted by factory pro and made 93 hp on their dyno so a gain of 23 hp is not enough to justify it for me. Thanks T-rex!

Wow, thanks for that. I'm going to have to pin my main jet to see what it is. I don't trust the marking as I've "heard" that they've been drilled. I don't have a high fuel level in the carb and don't have a lean condition at speed so I don't have any fuel overflow issues. Do you have a fuel pump? If not what does the key on without starting have to do with it? I'm guessing that you started with an older supercharger with J-tube and have the fuel pump still installed. Mine was updated from the J-tube and the pump removed so I just have gravity feed to my HSR-45.

You should be about 140 hp.  I tell you, 47 hp gain is a lot.  Mine gets out and goes!

Often times pictures speak louder than words. These slips are from different dyno runs using the old manifold and carburetor setup way back in 2001. One shows the difference between exhaust setups and the other between poor and good tuning.

Thanks for posting, BonS.

I was at 129, with the carb so screwed up it was dripping gas!  Have not had chance to dyno since fixed, but sure runs nice now!  My neaest dyno is 350 miles away.

Read me. Our dyno is calibrated and maintained.

I won't argue the numbers. However I will say this. I am no kid w/limited experience. I have built engines that set 14 landspeed records both as a rider and tuner. There's more but then again this is the 'net.  ;)

If my contributions are to be met with d**k waving contests then I'll move on. All you have to do is say so.

I always follow any supercharge post with interest. I didn't really think anybody was d**k waving. Just sharing other sources of info. and dynos. Need some cali cush to mello out there t-rex... ha ha totally kidding  :2funny:

You should set the fuel pressure so it has 1-2# of pressure at full boost. I threw out the regulator and pump that came with the kit and put a better set on. They are notorious for going lean at WOT. Mainly because the pump and regulator isn't keeping up. I put a temporary fuel pressure gauge on it and do some WOT runs and tweak the pressure till I still have some, any, pressure at wot. That rattling is going to break pistons.

I got everything sorted well. Bike wheelies off the throttle alone in 2nd and the customer has put 10K miles on it so far.

Here's a big payback for the help you guys gave me. I used an TCIP4 ignition from these guys. Plug and play,10 separate advance curves tied to boost sensor installed in manifold. Took some dyno time to sort it out, beware it came with too much advance at higher boost levels. All in my hands for under $300 USD. I have used them for ignitions on my 2 stroke landspeed bikes with excellent results. Their after sale customer support is great with the caveat that English is a second language for them so sometimes ya have to spell it out carefully for them. Here's a couple images for ya.

Boost sensor installed.

Ignition installed.

Thanks again for the help.

Whole shooting match. Curious about the cost. Been on my mind to do a supercharger. If I could still get the parts.
"Go sell crazy somewhere else,we're all stocked up"

Big Mike

It will cost you thousands. Might be better looking for one that is already done. They do come up once in a while. I may even know someone looking to sell one. The blower kit alone will cost between 4 and 5K.

As for that makuni carb, here is what I am using. It is a Holley 4 bbl. If you wondering what the 2 solenoids are on the back. One os for the water injection and the other for the nitros.

Mike, sweet setup, I'd love to do something with a blower on my ride but at my age there's two things I don't need: #1...a mistress, #2...a supercharged bike. Either one can kill you and in about the same amount of time.  :2funny:

IF I were to do it, I would most certainly replace the pistons/rods for stronger/better reliability. I'm interested in the ignition T.Rex spoke of. I'd like to have more info on that system so if you read this T, please expand on sources, models, how you got it to work on the Valkyrie.

EDIT: I went back and read his post re. the ignition and saw the link this time...missed it first time around. (duh)

Big Mike

Hi John,

I agree about the mistress, maybe not with the supercharger part though. As for the ignition I am not familiar with the one he used. I have an MSD ignition. No need to do any of that engine work with the Magnacharger kit. That was built to work with a stock motor and if set up correctly the motor will be fine. I intend to go to INZANE as a participant this year so we can talk all day about the bike. To much to write about here.

The supercharger kits were last available through Bill Bushling. His website, Magnacharger.us is now dead. I haven't tried calling him. I'd say that if you want one you'd better grab a used one while you can.
