Thoughts on aftermarket seats

I am thinking about changing out my seat on the ole El Diablo. 

I currently have the Mustang studded seat with backrest, which I like well enough, but want to get something that will allow me to ride longer in the saddle without soreness and numbness.

I have looked at both the Russell Day long (which my brother has and loves), and the Ultimate Bigboy and feel that one of these will be the direction I will go in.

Can you give me your thoughts on either (or both)? I would like to hear why you chose which you have and why you love it...or don't love it... Or if you would go another way if you had to do it again.

I know this is dependent on a LOT of different factors, but I am just looking for general feedback, especially from those who may have had both...Thanks

I had a big boy on my 97, but to be truthful I had 4 valkyrie interstates and ended up putting corbins on them all and loved them, I know you either love or hate a corbin, my butt was made for them.

I have the Ultimate Big Boy with an Alaska Leather's sheepskin and an airhawk and with that, I have no problems.

I've heard the actual "ultimate" is the Russell Day Long, since it's fitted to your derriere versus a "standard" gluteus maximus. Also that the Kingboy may be a better way to go as you can sit back a bit further on the bike.

I have ridden many 500 mile days on my combo and while other parts of my body (knees) may complain, no complaints from the southern region.

Anywho, the Ultimate King Big Boy, I had was just a bit too "dished" for me, especially in front. Pressed on the "boys" if you know what I mean. Now that shouldn't be a problem for you, as yours are in your wife's purse most of the time.         


Went with a Russell and never looked back. Nice flat, wide surface good support. Has been good for about 5 iron-butts and many, many 400 mile days.   The only issue you would have is ordering a Russell now means you probably won't get it until August or later. That's why I had mine done in the winter, getting it back in about 2 months.

I've got about 4 months into the Ultimate King Big Boy seat. Just finished a 650 mile ride to South Florida with no complaints. With my long legs, getting me a little further back in the saddle was important and the Ultimate did that. Now that I have my stock seat just laying around the house I'm thinking about sending it off to Russell and getting it done. But as for now, I'm quite happy with the Ultimate seat.

I'm happy with my stock I/S seat good for 200 miles and under rides which is 95% of my riding plus I have a full sheepskin cover on top to cushion the ride a tad.  If I drove longer distances routinely over 250 miles per day,  I'd consider the ultimate (either king or big boy not really sure) or russell day long although I've seen the russell and not as nice looking but people who have them love them but neither are cheap.

  Love my Ultimate King Big Boy with back rest. Ride many times more than 400 miles in a day and my butt is never the part tired. Sometimes one of my knees might start complaining a bit,  but I just usually move them around ie.. exchange high way pegs for stock pegs or some variation.

I've had a Mustang w/backrest for over 10 years and 100K.  It's served me well.

Just got a Ultimate Bigboy w/backrest and it is more comfortable for me.  Hope it holds up as well as the Mustang.

I had the Ultimate before the King was offered and it didn't work out for me. I then got the Russell Day Long and really like it. +1 on the Lengthy wait though. If you're wanting a Russell this summer, you better call soon!

Hello tell ya what the stock I/S seat killed me ...... Bought the ultimate king big boy seat.... Much much better that being said , still after 75 to 100 miles my stuff is wanting off  I mean I sometimes would have given the bike away for a ride home in a car.....  So if I were you I would buy the Russell and if for some reason you don't like it I will work a deal and a swap with you if your is in as good a condition as mine still looks brand new....... I  was weighing in at 360 but today  a bit less at 298

I tend to think it's my behind that's lacking.  I did an iron butt on the ultimate seat before I got the airhawk.  Since then, I've developed sciatic nerve problems and my knees are becoming a bit more arthritic, so I added more padding to allow for distance riding.

Heck, I've taken the airhawk in the cage on long trips over the last 2 years to help.  Otherwise, I can't really drive for a long trip.

So don't take my extra cushioning to be a fault of the ultimate seat.  It's more an issue of asphalt.

Bought an Ultimate KBB, it has lived up to it's name.

Try this on top your Mustang.  Floating on air is good.  Partially inflated (as it should be), it sits you up another half inch or so.  And on hot summer days, your butt is always dry.

In your situation, I understand. I used to use an Airehawk with my stock seat. It did help. I admit, I've got a candy assed rear end that usually couldn't go over 120 miles without needing to stop, stand and take the load off. That's why it was important to me to get the Russell. I wanted freedom from all the "gadgets".

My Ultimates are not really lacking, but all seats can be improved upon... mainly on long rides and hot days.

Rode over 600 miles (first time ever doing that many miles at once) on the stock seat to Inzane 7 and ended up with two numb spots, one on each cheek.  Three days later they were still numb (as I kept riding)  and I really thought I did permanent damage.  Ultimate just happened to be a vendor at that gathering.  I sat on all of them and determined that the King Boy was for me, but I didn't open the wallet just yet as I really didn't want to spend the dough.  The numbness finall did subside, but now I dreaded riding home so I pulled the plug and got the seat.

BEST thing I ever did.  I'm 6'4" and already had the peg lowering kit and mini apes, but when I got to sit another 1.5 back I was in heaven.  Aaaaaaand, no numbness, no nothing!  When I got home I ordered the back seat for the Mrs. and both backrests.  And they look fantastic as all are studded.

I also reccommend not riding in briefs.  Boxers and boxerbriefs are good.  I find that with the briefs, the seams at the leg openings can cause discomfort after sitting a lot because there is usually 4 pieces of the material bound up to make that seem and it is just enough to make it uncomfortable for me during long hauls.

I tend to think any seat made specific for you would be the best seat. That said, I had Corbin seats for my goldwings and rode many long days. Not sure about the newer seats, as my last non stock seat was a few years ago. JMHO

My Interstate originally had a Corbin on it, but I couldn't stand how hard and uncomfortable it was. I've had two Ultimates since then, the original, which was way to high in front, and the remodeled lowrider, which I've had for many years, including the Iron Butt we did a couple years ago. No complaints, but on really long rides, I'll sometimes change the feel with beads or sheepskin. BTW, I enjoy the banter between the brothers.

Now, as for you, if you need a better seat to ride to the spa for your mani/pedi's and then the 4 miles extra to treat yourself to a mocha latte with sprinkle of cinnamon after they nipped your cuticle, you can just sit on a doily (taken from your lace collection) covered 2x4.

It would be a win-win, as once you get home, your arse would look like a pitzel which might make you more attractive to your significant other.

Now there's a suggestion for distance riding preparation that hasn't previously been put forward.    

Seriously, for most riders I agree with the wiser brother's observation.  The best thing a rider can do to alleviate the discomfort of long distance riding is to ride regularly and long.

Little brother, your toughened hindquarters come from YOU riding a 2x4 (doily covered or not), but having it mounted standing up ! I know that is how you stay in the saddle on those long ironbutt rides (or is it that the saddle stays in you???)

And as for how attractive my arse is to my wife...what can I tell you....she loves to run her fingers through my hair (since I shave my head, she has to find hair somewhere to run her fingers)
