That takes a ton of practice and smarts to be able to use open sights at that distance let alone, for me anyways, over 100 yards.

Heck, I find it a challenge with a scope to down a deer at 300 yards.  Then again, if I practiced firing at 300 yards vs. 100 yards tops it would help. 

With the price and scarcity of bullets nowadays, you cannot just go out any old time and fire a dozen rounds week after week.

FYI,
You use the peep that you see at the bottom of the ladder, and as long as you have good eyes, they are EXTREMELY accurate.
At 1000 that is some awesome shooting, but I know the rifle is capable. It always comes down to the stock nut.

Years ago when I got my first 03, I was shooting at a game commish range and a guy on the bench to the left of be kept telling me how it was junk and I needed a Remchesteravage just like his with a Lee-ya-pold (whatever). The guy on the right was looking through a spotting scope and told him that my groups were better than his, and "he don't need anything else".

My kids are going to shoot that same rifle at Perry this year in the Springfield shoot.

My eyes prefer the rear peep that came on the 03A3, than the ladder on the '03 (and old Mausers).  Not for long range, don't have any around here.  I can ring a chest size plate at 200 standing with a sling with my Garand all day.  Probably my favorite rifle ever.

Pretty cool going to Camp Perry.... never been.

Jess, take that Garand and go. Point the car west and north. Its a games match so not really all that anal. 5 sighters, 10 slow fire prone, 10 rapid fire standing to prone and 10 offhand. No slings in offhand though.

Its a blast. I started with the 03, and now do the Springfield with a 03a3, the Garand, the carbine, the vintage and if I get my 03AFaux done I will be using that in the vintage sniper. Used a Mosin with a PU scope last year and as a team we came in 72 or 74 out of 240 teams. Oldest daughter and the son did a Garand match last summer so I asked them if they wanted to do the carbine and Springfield matches, they said yes. Its my vacation.

I'm not one for waiting in lines.  But it's on my list of things to do (at least to see if not shoot).

Definitely my kind of crowd!

My 03A3 is a perfect condition Smith Corona.  It is also a great shooter.

My Springfield Armory Garand was an arsenal rebuild in the early 60's, appears the stock went to two wars (not sure) and I wouldn't change it.

I am now working on finding a place to shoot them a ways downstate on private property, ranges around here are few, expensive and crowded, rifle ranges nearly nonexistent.
