when i was young and rich, a buddy and i were going to buy a hummer and drive to Rio.  then the stock market crashed, and the stock that i was invested in tanked, and that was the end of that.  now, i'm married, fat, unambitious, and near the end of life and poor.......  so much for dreams......

Crazy roads!   

Several of my riding buds have KLRs and have done the Continental Divide route from Canada to Mexico.
I'm not into that kind of thing.  Too old.  Too heavy.  Too many body parts don't work.

I recognize so many of those places from my trip in 2007. I shipped my 01' I/S to Sao Paulo and rode around Brasil for about 2 months. Then went down the east coast of South America to the bottom of Argentina in Ushuaia. Headed north over the Andes along the west coast through Santiago, La Paz, Macchu Pichu, Quito and Bogata. Highest point we rode was just shy of 16,000 feet. Shipped the bike to Panama City and finished the ride to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Wonderful trip with a great friend. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Wow, what a ride......at first I thought the sign post forest was the one in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory.......

Damn....... Mike, tell me you didn't ride those little 3 feet wide flat topped stone walls they call a road!!!!!!  Those made my butt pucker!!!!..

We didn't ride those little donkey paths but we did ride some incredible roads. Roads that any sane rider would not even consider on a Valk (just learned something about myself). If my friend had not gotten sick we would have ridden the Highway Of Death in Bolivia. He just didn't have the strength to handle it. We did make several stream crossings that were very deep. I don't know how deep for sure as I was concentrating on the rocks in the stream. One crossing was following a big Caterpiller loader clearing the path for me as the water rushed by. My feet were on the pegs and my boots were full of water. The Valkyrie really is a very good dual-sport. No one told me or the bike it couldn't be done. I'm really looking forward to the Dalton Highway and the Dempster Highway in Alaska this winter on the Valkyrie with the sidecar. A little bit more prep work on this one than South America. Looking forward to seeing you and the gang on the 25th.  Safe winds!
