WTF roof vent pipe flashing

 >:(So I while up on my roof I noticed that my roof vent pipe rubber flashing has a hole big enough to shove 2 fingers in it?    . I check the other one and the same thing now I am really pissed.  I had those changed 10yrs ago when we put a new roof on.  Oh and it been raining on and off for the last few days.So what to do in the temp fix.   I took a small plastic bag and wrapped it around the took one of my wifes old cool whip contaniners and cut a hole in it and slid that over. Kind a redneck but it should work for a day.   Anyone ever replace just the rubber boot only or do I have to replace the whole flashing?

Think you have to replace the whole thing. A lot products anymore are truly inferior. I have two gas water heaters that are needing replacement because the controls are failing. There only ten years old too. Frinkinjunk!

Depending on the condition of the shingles would determine what I would do. If the shingles are still flexible and the weather is warm, I'd change the whole vent.
Its kinda normal for the boots to deteriorate after about 10 years. There are slip-on replacement boots that work well which I would use if the shingles are too brittle.

It's either that or on the side of your house and I think on the roof is more attractive w/o side vents going thru the vinyl siding, etc. 

Could be those darn squirrels if you have them nearby they can raise havoc on vent products.  My mother in law has squirrel problems around her roof vents and i had to install wire mesh around them since the darn things were chewing all around them.  Either them or other rodents putting holes in the roof vent and other areas maybe?

Anyone who thinks the tanked gas water heaters made in the late 90's and more so 2000 and newer will last more than 12 years is fooling themselves.  Ask any good plumber/tanked water heater installers and they will tell you the 3-4 companies who make the tanks are now so thin they will leak and fail within 7-12 years.   All the tanked water heater installers I contacted say the average life expectancy is 8 years is all.  That is why I went to a tankless on demand gas water heater that hopefully the extra costs and piping needed will last 25+ years or more and is already saving me about 20 bucks per month in gas savings.  If I was 65+ years old,  only then would I go to another traditional tanked gas water heater.
