..

I cancelled my reservation for tomorrow night due to crappy weather.

They are going to charge me 15% for credit card processing and refund. I've never heard of this before.

Not a great deal of money but no mention made at time of the phone booking.

It's my punishement for not staying at The Phillips Motel in Robbinsville.  ;)

Well, you can always challenge the charge with you CC company and see what happens.

My wife and I stayed there a couple years ago, be glad you did not stay there. the room only had a bed, 1 chair and a desk. No TV, no WiFi etc.  Had a community TV outside in a pavilion. Tried to take a shower, turned it on and the valve broke, took the manager 3 hrs to stop the water flooding the bath room. Place was horrible, I would never consider staying there again.

Dispute it with the CC...they'll probably get you satisfaction.

Otherwise, make sure you give them a "good" review on Yelp... >:(

I was just reading about questionable charges retailers put on credit cards at point of purchase.  :-[ Every one or most every one is out to increase the bottom line-no matter how it increases.  :-\ And we THOUGHT it was just deception central that was trying to clean us out. Paul-as an aside-I MAKE sure my change is correct BEFORE I leave the register. 15% of whatever is LESS money in your pocket.  :crazy2: If it ain't too time consuming"tune"their ass up.  :cooldude: Try to get a ruling in YOUR favor.  ;) RIDE SAFE.

Jeez Bill, glad you chose better than that when we travelled together.   ???

I go online to my CC statement.

Beside each entry is a DISPUTE button.

Press the dispute button and a screen pops up, fill out the details of the dispute.

CC does not charge you for itt until the dispute is resolved.    Works for me.

It's wrong if they didn't mention the 15% in their cancellation policy, but in fairness a business that has set aside a room for you and processed your card has incurred an expense and has possibly forgone other opportunities to rent out that room.  A cancellation within 48 hours certainly leaves them very little chance to replace the business.

To be magnanimous in absorbing the loss would possibly have endeared them to you as a possible future customer, but then again, perhaps not.

It seem as customers we have adopted a sense of entitlement that we don't generally like to see under other circumstances.

It's tough making a living as a small business and made even tougher by opportunities to deal with unreasonable demands by customers.

..

Willow,

If they had told me about the 15% I would not have a problem because then I could have made a choice about booking a room with the possibility of my cancelling it.

I agree, Paul, that as I said, not revealing the cancellation policy up front would be (or was) wrong.  The 15% to me sounds like a pretty reasonable amount.

Incidentally, I'm guessing they'll pass on the chance at kissing your hindquarters.   ;)

I can see up to 3% for use of credit card, but not over since they have to pay merchant fees equaling about that for the 'priviledge' of being able to charge as a convenience to  their customers.  Anything over that,  I'd not stay there either.

Worst motel I ever stayed at had bugs crawling all over and the double bed creaked terribly made in 50's or 60's but it was like 2 a.m. and couldn't drive any longer had to crash somewhere so took it but sure had a sore back from that flimsy thin mattress if you want to call it that.  I guess should have slept in the truck would've been better off.

When I was over the road and needed a motel I tried to be picky. Sometimes because of truck parking restrictions I couldn't be as picky as I wanted to be. There were times I wanted a motel and after them showing me the room I was better off in the truck.  :2funny: RIDE SAFE.

My favorite motel story.

Was riding up north in MI all day on a holiday weekend and waited too long to find a room.  Just seeing no-vacancy after no-vacancy until well after dark.  Finally I see this little cabin place that looks abandoned, but some life, so I stop.  He says he has one cabin left but it's not in very good shape.  Started pouring rain, and I was glad for anything.  Moved in and as the rain continued, the roof leaked badly in a steady waterfall, right into the middle of the one single bed. I made no effort to move it (too late) just watched it fill up with water like a sponge as the night wore on (ran down the walls too).  Slept in a pile of towels, clothes and cushions on the floor in a dry spot.  Listening to a waterfall is actually good for sleep...... except for the peeing part.

Left a little note.
I did not wet the bed, the rain did it (who pees 40 gallons?).  I think you need to install a life preserver in this cabin.

Was only $40 (30 years ago).

Was a have too situation, we were staying at the Phillips motel in Robinsville, and needed another week, but they were booked up so had to find an alternate. We were heading to Maggie valley so picked one on the way. BAD choice. On my list to never visit again.
