Had a couple of teeth filled on May 1st......my Dentist accidentally hit a nerve on the upper one.....she said she got the bleeding to stop and then coated it with medicine, finished filling it, and then walked me up to the receptionist afterwards to give her special instructions to call in some Motrin(800mgs) and some Lortabs to the pharmacy......and then told me to go get the meds then go home and take a Motrin BEFORE the numbing medicine from the filling procedure wore off....... :o....she also told me that if it gave me any problems to call them back that weekend and they'd see me if need be.......my boss told me to take the rest of the day off.....they also told me to try to reserve the Lortabs(if I needed them) to the night time hours since it's possible they MIGHT show up if I had any kind of drug tests/etc.....

Later that day and for the first week after, I had NO pain......yea!!!.....about the second week I got a sharp headache behind my right eye that hurt like hell.....WTH?....then.... a few days later, I got another one......and it was after I had been working hard in the yard and stopped to drink some cold water from the fridge......felt a tingling in my upper right jaw(where that tooth was filled) and then the intense pain behind the eye......I took a Motrin......helped a little......

Yesterday I was working in the yard and stopped to drink some cold water once again......and then a few minutes later.....the pain started up again.....I hadn't eaten anything since lunch and the Motrin bottle says to take it AFTER a meal....but I knew what was coming if I didn't get it in me right away.......this time though, it made me sick at my stomach......I was stripped down nekkid, sweating like a hog, sitting under a ceiling fan and running into the bathroom to throw up only to find I had nothing to contribute.......8-((......I then went and took a Lortab and laid down on my futon in the office under the ceiling fan.....the pain started going away about an hour later.....

Told my boss this morning about yesterdays episode.....and at the end of the day, after a really hard job......you guessed it......drank some water from the cooler trying to keep it on the LEFT side of my mouth, but that didn't work......here came the pain.....I took a couple of Acetaminophen tablets to try to get ahead of the pain I knew was coming, but by quitting time, I had that sharp pain behind my right eye again..... >:( >:(...the boss told me I should call their emergency contact #'s and let them know what was going on in case it was an abscess now.... ..ended up throwing up in the parking lot before I drove home......got home and had to upchuck again before I could get in the house......I took two of the Lortabs and laid down until just now......the pain has faded away for the most part......I really don't want to have to mess their weekend up with this.....maybe I can just be careful and not cause it to happen again this weekend and get to them first thing Monday??...... :-\......

All I know is that when I had the big "Vasectomy" a few years ago, I only took about 3 Lortabs after it and threw the rest of them away......I do NOT want to have to depend on pills every time this pain flares up.......hope I don't have to pay to get this fixed......I love my Dentist.....she's been a good one and was very upfront about the mistake.....her first one with me in the 20+ years I've been going to her.....just need to get this fixed because I haven't hurt this bad since my last full blown case of the Flu many years ago.......

Hope you can make it thru the weekend. But an abscess is nothing to play around with. Not only is it painful as it can be, it can also lead to other complications that include blood infection. I would think that a good regimen of strong antibiotics would be ordered.

Stan, this may or may not be related to your dental work.  Accidentally hitting a nerve in a tooth means the cavity was way down in the tooth (like root canal depth).  Often a tooth that drilled out will crack without a cap (and root canal) (and have to be pulled.... then a $3k implant, or like me an empty space).

If it ain't dental, you may want a neurologist.

Get seen soon.  This crap rarely just goes away.          Drink luke warm until you do.

I got no pain killers for a vasectomy, just my own ice (once).  And other than the worry, that procedure was way easier and less painful than 25 of my worst dentist visits.

The Dental Assistant called me back after I left a message on the emergency cell # contact.......she said to come in first thing Monday morning and that they will have to send me to a Dentist(fancy name I can't remember) that does root canals.......that they will remove the nerves in it and it shouldn't bother me ever again in that tooth......tp keep taking the pain meds if needed......

I get cleanings every 6 months and this was the first filling I've had to have in several years......guess my luck was bound to run out sometime...... :(

Probably, yes.  The endodontist will fix you up.

Root canals on 3-4 root molars with raw nerves are just a whale of a good time.  Eat a little something and pop some dope before the drive over (I'd take a cage), and let them shoot you full of Novocain.

Sometimes, they will send you home with a strong course of antibiotics for a week, before the procedure, to calm down the nerve before they go drilling it out.

Been there done that got the Tshirt, several times.

Good Luck Stanley.       Glad you are finally taking the advice to call in.

I been there, done that and had to have it redone.     Seems as there is several nerves in the molars.    They missed one of them a few years back.

When I went back I wanted to grab him by the kahunas and say we aren't going to hurt each other are we.

This guy was, now I say was our dentist.    The kids would go and 1/2 the time they would say he was rough and he hurt us awful bad.    I put it off as it was just the kids not having any guts.      I had to go in for a filling.    The Asst, (helper, suction and water spray)  came in to give me a deading shot, Now understand, the tooth we are working on is in the upper set of teeth, she shot me in the lower portion.   Never thought anything about it as I'd never had to have Novocain for tooth work.     He started in and don't know what the hell he hit but it put a buckle in the back side.   Told him, hey take it easy, that smarted, he said oh just buckle up you are old enough for this tooth work.  He hit it again, I grabbed his hand in a Police hold, put him on his knees and I walked out.    As I went by the counter, I told the receptionist, whatever my balance on the acct is, ZERO it out as you will play hell collecting it.

I went to another Dentist and been with him for about 20 years now.   He called this joker asking for our records.  He wouldn't give them to him.    I went over to his office and said I'm hear to pick up the records for me, wife and all the kids.   He said those records are mine.   I asked him if he wanted put on his knees again, he said no, I'll get them for you.     Last time I ever saw him.

Since they are sending you to a specialists, don't think it will be free.  I scheduled a routine yearly physical 100% covered and they coded it as a regular office visit covered 80% along with the bloodwork s/b paid 100% and they coded it as 'obesity' paid at 0%.  Will call next week and tell them to reprocess with proper coding and if not, see if they get a dime out of me, won't be paying a dime!  See if I listen to the wife ever again bitching to me I should get a physical since haven't gone in years and you wonder why?

A root canal, followed by a crown.  (although I've had it the other way round too)

My missing molar followed paying cash, at the uninsured rate (which appears to be about a third higher than if you have insurance, even if your annual coverage is all used up) for both a root canal and a crown, only to have the tooth disintegrate anyway, no more than 10 months following the expense.  I was not happy about that, and would not reward my dentist with additional income from a three tooth bridge or an implant for the same tooth.  I am no expert, but if a tooth cannot be reasonably saved, do not charge me large for a 10-month repair, only to follow with even higher expense to fix the missing tooth.  It should have been pulled to start, followed with a three-tooth bridge.

I have always done well taking care of my teeth, but had bad luck anyway.  I have always told my dentists............ Doc, I only need a Chevy, not a Cadillac.

Having said that, I have since had two root canals and crowns for two additional molars, that just died painfully with no (new) cavities/trauma at all.  I can live without one molar, but I cannot live without many more.  And I'm 60, and you are.... much less than 60.  Pulling teeth is always cheaper, but you need some to chew your (good) food, unless you are ready for the oatmeal diet for life (gag).  I also am planning to never have dentures (gag).  Assess the pros and cons and make your choices.  My one missing molar has ended up stressing those on the other side that do disproportionate work.

BTW, I may have overstated your impending root canal, most of my single root fronts were easy but one infected-nerve molar root canal was the most painful thing that ever happened to me... and I had to pay a lot of money for that pain.

Ugh, I go in this next week to have a 20+ year old crown pulled off and see what's left under it, root canal at best, pull the tooth at worst... Not looking forward to that!

Hope things go well for ya' Stanley! Nothing like the pain of a tooth infection. (I developed one when I was working on an oil rig in Africa. The pressurization of an airplane REALLY hurts!!! Luckily the rig medic gave me some good oral meds to help me get home.)

I guess our resident dentist stays out of these posts.

Serk, seems to me they should just root canal thru the crown (I've had that done).  To pull a crown they usually have to cut it off and destroyed; if a root canal can save the tooth, you have to pay for another crown.  I could be wrong, but...

This one's evidently rotted out underneath the crown pretty badly, and the crown is a real old style (My previous dentist put things in my mouth that my current dentist couldn't believe, said I was about 30 years too young to have that type of stuff in my mouth) so I'm going in expecting to replace the crown, if I'm lucky. But he won't know for sure what's under there until he pulls it since the current crown is metallic and blocks most of the x-ray...

Gotcha.

Growing up, and in the military, dentists were well practiced at building up a very drilled-out tooth with metal amalgam; made them strong and lasted many years.  Nobody does that anymore.  Now it's a crown, which is no doubt stronger and longer lasting, but 10 times the price too.  My comment about giving me a Chevy and not a Cadillac makes my dentist laugh, but I mostly get the Cadillac because that's what he knows how to do.

I now have a crappy little dental ins policy that costs $300 a year, and pays up to $1K a year, IF you learn to play the system and time things right (my dentist's money/business/ins lady and I are good friends, and she has taught me how to work it correctly).  I hit my max for the year last month.

UPDATE:.........Just finished my first(hopefully only) root canal in my first 43 yrs of life......didn't hurt a bit having it done.....we'll see how it feels when all the numbing medicine wears off..... :-\ :-\.......Dentist told me to take ~800mgs of motrin every 6 hrs for the next 3 days....and only after eating something.....

$1,250 total.........$600 deposit and then they'll file insurance.....and later on, it's gonna cost some more for my dentist to put a crown on it...... :( :( :(.........I wish I had of won the Powerball lottery now......

Well at least your symptoms should be resolved, hopefully.  Take the Motrin whether you have pain or not, it is anti inflamatory (not a pain med) and will speed recovery of the trauma/surgery.

I know professionals are supposed to be well paid, but assuming this took about a hour or so to complete, I can tell you I never made $1250 an hour in my life.  (and yes there was probably an Xray or two, and some materials were used, like gutta percha (rubber to fill the hole).

I have paid out more in dental bills than any other expense but my mortgage, for several years.

Only slightly  related, but worth telling anyway:

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and was on the verge of being burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to change careers and become a motorcycle mechanic. He found out from the local technical college what was involved, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill.
When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%.

Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying
"I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding grade, but I wondered if there had been an error which needed adjusting."

The instructor said,
"During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. Then you put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."

The instructor went on to say,
"And I gave you an extra 50% because you did all of it through the muffler."

It must be root canal month?? I went in last week for some horrible mouth pain. Took some xrays. Told me best option was a root canal and crown. Gave me some atibiotics and I go in next tuesday to have it done. He said $12-1300 for the whole job and would do the crown at the same time.

Good price, around here it is about $800 for the root canal and another $K for the crown (for a molar, it may be less for front teeth)

I wonder how he does it all at one time?  After the root canal, they prep the tooth for a crown by grinding it down, then take a mold from that to make the crown (usually sent out).  I guess it's a one-shop stop.

Stanley Steamer

was $1,250 for just the root canal.....had to give them $600 deposit with the insurance hopefully covering the other half........got to go back to my regular dentist for the crown at some point.... :(
