Hey everyone, i know this topic has been beat to death ( i searched) But this queston is for smoker who uses the cigarette lighter 12v plug as an actual cigarette lighter.  I got the socket wired up, the outside of the plug gets hot but the lighter is dead cold. Bought the socket brand new with the lighter. Does it just take a really long time or something im missing?  Thanks in advance

Not much to hookin' it up.  Positive to positive, negative to negative.  Should work...unless you've got a dud.

Try it with the lighter from your car and vice versa.

A power port will have small wires and a 5 amp, or smaller fuse. A cig lighter needs at least #14 wire and a 10 amp fuse. Maybe you haven't got a large enough electrical supply.

I just added one to the pod on my Interstate. I agree that the wire has to be the proper gauge (I used 12 gauge). One thing I notices when shopping for a waterproof lighter is that many of the lighter style 12V ports are not suitable for lighters. Did the lighter actually come with the port? If not, its probably not suitable for a lighter but only for a auxiliary port.

I have this on my left handlebar, http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/14/141/20809/DPITEM/Cruiser-Motorcycle-Power-Accessories-Emgo-Handlebar-Mount-Cigarette-Lighter.aspx
I cut a hole in the bottom of a long pill bottle, painted it black, siliconed the wires and the pill bottle to the bottom of the lighter and loomed the wires under the tank. Works great and has a large knob so you can use it with gloves.

Thanks everyone for the input, I think you have figured out my problem. It had a 12v power port wired up when i bought it, so i just changed the socket over for one that accepts a lighter. I will have to run new wire back for the new socket. Its 10 amp fused but the exisiting wire probably isn't heavy enough. Ill get it changed out and let ya'll know how it turned out.
