Go Pro camera question

I've exhausted every source I know of.....but still have no answer.  Does anyone have experience using the GoPro (which takes a microSD memory card) camera and downloaded the SDcard memory into some type of portable device - other than a laptop ?  I've been repeatedly told to use a portable hard drive and when I question the vendor, at point of purchase, they end up telling me you cannot directly download a SDcard into a portable hard drive.  I have an iPad, but with 32gb memory, it can not handle too many hours of video.

What do the guys who travel extensively in the boonies do.......other than carry a hugh supply of extra SDcards to carry back home?  I'd love to hear from someone with an actual 'hands-on' solution.

As far as I know, there are no alternatives to a full blown laptop. Main problem is the power an external HD draws from the host. No table, to my knowledge, is capable of supplying enough. A portable storage device that will accept an SD card is sorely lacking. The Asians don't have a freaking clue and Americans aren't capable of producing such a device so you're stuck with a laptop.

Although I don't use my GoPro anymore, I just checked it and found I was using a 2gb card. I have a 16 in my Drift Ghost with an 8 gb carry along for backup. Memory cards aren't as expensive as they once were and I'll probably get a 32 soon. If you are using an android device you might want to check out dropbox or sky drive. They're cloud storage and with, like, sky drive, any files on your card(provided you can pull it from your cam and put it in your phone,E.T.C.) will be available on your pc, tab, phone. Mostly, I'd say a couple of 32's would do the trick providing your GoPro model accepts that large of a card.♫

I have exactly what you are looking for. I bought it off eBay about 2 years ago and it is called a 'Photo & Data Center'. It cost me about $20. It has a rechargeable battery and 4 card reader slots (CF, SD etc.) around the edge of the unit and a simple LCD display. You supply your own 2.5" hdd. Plug in a memory card push a button and it copies anything on the memory card into a unique folder on the HDD. When you get home you connect with a USB cable to your PC and it appears as an external drive.



So they do exist they are made mainly for photographers so maybe have a search for one in the photographic section of eBay.

I came across something close to the external hd memory card reader on ebay today.

Granted it's used but comes with a 160GB hd and the power supply.

As I said you put your own HDD in it. I have 120gb in mine. I don't know if it would take the1TB ones though as they weren't available when I bought it and 120 is big enough for my needs.
