Any speedo-drive will work, Just on the I/S instead of the cable bolting in, The I/S has a transducer that bolts in and turns a rotating coupler to a digital signal.

I know this for a fact. After replacing the tranducer/cable unit on my I/S, it still didn't register MPH. I looked at my 98 Std. and the drive units were identical; I switched my 98 unit over to my 2k I/S and it worked just fine.

I bought a drive unit and axle on ebay about two months ago for $5.00 plus shipping. Shipping was a whopping $7.99.

what the heck is a "speedometer drive"? Is it the cable that runs from the wheel to the speedo? ???

the drive is the part that coverts from turnny turnny to spinny spinny, so the cable spins to operate the speedo. now the speedo converts all this from spinny spinny to sweepy sweepy.

the speedometer drive is fitted around the axle and engages the front rim. As the front rim turns the drive transfers this rotational motion 90 degrees so that it powers the speedometer cable drive tang. when the speedometer cable is attached to the drive, it transfers this pendulate motion to the input of the speedometer, there it is converted analogously to a display designed to be interpreted by the operator. please see attached Photograph.

As you can see: the drive is the part that converts from turnny turnny to spinny spinny, so the cable spins to operate the speedo. now the speedo converts all this from spinny spinny to sweepy sweepy.
