Deer Crossing Signal

I had a deer cross the road in front of me today riding WI-35 along the Mississippi.  Nothing close and there was no one close behind me so I slowed and watched for followers (deer that is).  Seeing approaching riders, I tried to alert them to their presence.  That is, I tried to alert the H-D riders to the presence of the deer, not the other way around, although it probably would have done as much good.  The on comers just waved.

Has anyone ever heard of a "deer crossing ahead" signal that could be flashed to on coming riders?  Perhaps left hand on top of head/helmet with all fingers up, simulating antlers?  Of course, some may gaze at us, asking themselves what that fool is doing, the instant before hitting the deer.

A group of us came across a motorcycle/deer accident last year, and it is not a pretty site.

Glad you are o.k. the news said June is a bad time for collisions as well with new fawns and all going on.  Have only nipped a fawn once but no damage so just kept on driving luckily in the cage but one huge doe crossed right in front of me booking and glad I was driving slow right after dark since I knew that area was full of deer. 

I'm sure one year I will hit one good it is only a matter of time, hope it is in the cage though.

They would have to cover my entire steet! Haven't seen any such siganls like you menitoned only the yellow signs with the deer "happily" leaping in the air. Lotta good those things do!
   This time of year begins my "more alert" time. I hate the corn season. The farmers here plant right next to the road and intersections. Makes for some heads up riding.

I still think they should move those crossing to less traveled areas, and maybe put up a light so they wait their turn like everybody else!

 I hit a deer in 1988 that did not have a valid insurance card. About $1500.00 In damage to the bike and a minor hip and shoulder dis-location to me.

They should fine those deer that don't cross at the designated "deer crossing" zones.

I agree whole heartedly.  They should also require them to carry insurance.  The one I hit 4/29 didn't cross at the sign or have insurance.     Funny thing, I got a letter in the mail Saturday from an ambulance chaser, I mean attorney's office, wanting to represent me if I wanted to sue the "uninsured motorist" that was responsible for my accident.  Can I claim the deer was a "ward of the State" and seek compensation from the forestry department?

About 2 weeks ago I was on a Mo. letter road-as opposed to number-that I hadn't been on before. Nice stretch of road-curvy tree lined and the surface itself in good repair. And truth be told I was groovin on it. And something SCREAMED at me to slow down a LOT. Came around this sharp right hand sweeper and there in my lane lookin right at me-forest rat bitch.  Had to come to a complete stop. No signs no lights and had I NOT slowed down I would have had that bitch in my lap. And there are folks on this board that just KNOW having one in yer lap on a M/C is something you just don't wanna do.  As to warning lights some years back on the Indiana toll road they had some what they called-deer warning lights. I don't even know if that setup is still there or not or how well it worked or didn't work. RIDE SAFE.

Perhaps simply use the universal 'slow down' hand signal?

The other riders may then slow down while they look for the reason you flashed them the 'slow down' signal.  Doesn't matter if they think you are warning them of some debris up ahead or a speed trap.  The result should be the same--slow down and become more alert for the next couple of miles.

This actually happened!  Came upon a deer vs auto collision late one night and stopped to help.  No one injured except the deer.  Car with some off duty soldiers.  When talking with them while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, one remarked that he had not seen a deer crossing warning sign.  With a straight face I managed to say, I'd guess the deer didn't know how to read anyhow.  Blank looks, and then the light bulb came on, they cracked up!  Hoser

they used to have a wildlife alert system in northen IN on I-80, a series of poles that had infrared beams running between them and a yellow light would start flashing on the pole if the beam was broken.

pretty slick but almost anything could break the beam and then your lookinbg for game instead of watching traffic.

William, your right!  The universal slow down signal is probably the best.  That's what I was looking for.

I just knew that this thread would be migrated to "Dear Crossing Signs" and that the "Please Move the Deer Crossing Sign" video would again be posted.  I have listened to that dozens of times and it is still hilarious, don't think it ever get old.

We see so many deer in the evening, returning home after a movie.  Just last Saturday, I had to brake hard when a doe crossed in front of me.  Susan is amazed at my ability to see them when there is only movement out there beyond the range of the car's headlights.  She will not drive at these times.  My closest encounter on a bike was just last year on the Pig Tail in Arkansas.  Front tire missed a young one by inches.  Have you ever done a stopie on your Valk.
