now I live in FLA, I'm giving serious consideration to the life of a darksider. the few turns we do have in my area are pretty mild and you won't find an agressive curve for a few hundred miles.

mileage is the primary goal, being able to patch it is another consideration. and then there is always this to consider;

I was on # 7 when I Triked MGM out, so now I'm running on 2 car tires.

VERY shortly afterwards...my first rear tire didn't make it till the first oil change. Stupid dunlops sucked worse than any tire I've ever had in a lifetime of riding. 5000 miles and 85% tread gone and it was delaminating. I then burned through $1000 bucks worth of tires in a single summer due to the crappy elites coming apart, an exuberant throttle hand, and slices/debris in the perpetual construction zone that was my commute at the time.

Starting in fall 2001, I think...there were tire shortages as they had *finally* banned the elites and everybody else (avon/metz/bridgestone) was having some sort of manufacturing problem.

Needed a rear tire, they were not to be had. Went darkside. Never looked back.

Before I went darkside I had to guide that machine to a stop from highspeed and with a rear flat 7 times. Every one of 'em unseated. The Valk is pretty well behaved with a rear flat, but it's still not fun/safe.

After darkside, I've had a more than a few things in the tires, but only one where it was a running flat, and that was no problem at all. Full control. Much safer.

Wow.....I have had only one blow out (rear tire) at freeway speed and that was not too traumatic, but 7 is like rolling the dice!  You are living proof of good skills and a calm head keeping the shiney side up in an emergency......I still think there is a phenomena with this bike that seems to allow the front tire to hit a object and "stand it up" and it punctures the rear tire. I have had several objects that punctured the rear tire (not a blow out) and had to be plugged......a lot more than on my vehicles...just seems strange..

tank_post142

you gotta stay out of the center of the lane. that's when all the junk accumulates, away from the tire tracks.
I got a rock :(

Rio Wil

Tank.....looks like you hold the most mileage yet, rough add up is a bit over 250K and counting....

Another reason I never ride the middle lane is often drivers will straddle an object in the road and you don't have a ghost of a chance of dodging it....plus there is less of a oil slick when wet when you track the driver or passenger tires..

I'll venture a guess for the BF Goodrich of 225/55/16
About ½" less clearance on each side but seems do-able.

Mr.BubblesVRCCDS0008

0008 is my DS number. over 130,000 so far. about 5 or 6 different tires. Don't think I'm gonna change anytime soon.

I'm new to the Dark Side...put a Riken Raptor 205/55-16 on last Monday...put 1100 miles on it...LOVE IT! will never go back...:)

It is a 205/60/16, and it's discontinued, but can be found with a lot of looking. Beware that it comes in two tread styles: the flame and conventional. I found one and it's sitting in my garage in waiting. The date code on my tire is about 4 years old but it's real, real sticky and doesn't show any signs of aging.  I'm already darkside but love the looks of this tire.

BIG--T

So it looks like y'all are averaging 50k or so. How often you you grease her and check the rear end? I know I do when my mc tire wears out. Just curious- thinking about trying it when my Metz wear out. :cooldude:

therapist

As one of the early adopters of the the darkside life, that is one of the downsides.  It is way too easy to forget/ignore servicing the rear end every 15K.  I am way over, myself.  Haven't had the energy to tackle the job, plus would have to learn it all over again, it has been so long (don't put many miles on the lady anymore).
