What kind of gun posts? We have shot the heck out of quite a few prairie dogs. The Swift, 22-250 and 6mm have performed well. A friend brought a .17 and .204, they shoot pretty good as long as the wind isn't blowing. A lot of the dogs have been poisoned, a shame. To my way of thinking death by a lethal dose of lead poisoning is by far a more honorable way for these dogs to meet their end.

A doctor buddy of mine has a closet full of class three weapons, and participates in the WWI games.
Told me I could only be a good guy (Allies) if I shaved my face hair.  But I can be a German with all the fuzz I want.  Trenches, biplanes, and everything.  It sounds like fun.  I got all the 03s, SMLEs, Mausers and bayonets, but no uniforms.

In any event, I would not be a frog.

I have been looking all over for a 2" model 15 Smith (face to face in VA only).  Every kind of auto pistol known to man is being listed, bought and sold daily, but it is hard finding old revolvers.  People must be holding on to them.  I love K frames (in blue only).

I waited for this new gun, a Henry Mare's Leg, from last October to about 3 weeks ago.  Finally got it in, manufacturing and shipping were delayed due to hurricane Sandy.  .44 magnum
Picture doesn't do it justice, the brass and bluing are top notch!

I have a S&W that looks very much like that, except mine is an Model 37 Airweight in Nickel. Bought it from Walmart about 28 years ago

Trying to figure out what would be the best high powered rifle that would work as a sniper style rifle. Looking to be new York compliant (bolt action or a five round magazine). Would also like the bullets to be reasonably priced. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Move to a different state?

In all seriousness, a model 700 Remington or a Savage.
.223 is a decent round, not overly pricey for ammunition and the .223 can be very accurate.

Well blow me down!  I also have a nickel 37 with the square butt J-frame (my bike gun).  That is a pretty rare piece (and obviously worth holding on to).  :cooldude:  Picked it up for a song in an old pawn shop some years ago.

The 15 is an all steel K-frame 6-shot with adj sights; weighs more, shoots better.

So when they come to collect the black scary guns... Since the only part that is considered a "gun" is the lower with the serial number... you can just hand them the stripped lower, correct?  ;)

D, "best" covers a lot of territory and prices can be up there.  Are you looking to hit deer or minute of bad guy at 2-400 yards or more, or make cloverleaf groups at long range?  Will you carry it around, or only to the bench?  High power most often means .308 (7.62) or 30.06 which are both cheaper than 7mm mag (longer range).  And a .243 is a very flat shooting cartridge at distance as well (also used in Vietnam as sniper rifles).  Heavier bullets do better in wind than lighter. The 30.06 goes about 200 fps faster than .308 in the same bullet weights, but .308 is a good cartridge and a bit cheaper than 30.06.  You can spend more for stainless, long target bull barrels, synthetic stocks, bipods, adjustable buttstocks, and ultra light weight rifles, but most really do not need these things.

Any decent bolt rifle with wood stock should be able to fulfill a sniper role (Ruger 77, Winchester 70, Remington 700, Savage, or CZ).  I have a simple inexpensive Lightweight Mod 70 Winchester with a reasonably priced 3-10 variable scope that works.  Also have some 30.06 military Springfields that may even shoot better, but they are iron sight only.

The first thing to do is go to a bunch of gun blogs/forums and read up on the various choices.  Then go around to some gun shops and try to find people who know what they are talking about and ask questions.  Often as not, this is other (older) customers more than counter people... but not always.  You may want new, but will be able to find very nice used rifles with good optics already in place that have likely had any bugs worked out in the past.  People rarely shoot the barrels out of these rifles, but some people do not clean or take care of them very well.

Optics have even more choices than rifles.  And it is easy to spend more for the scope than the rifle. Better glass will allow you to shoot in very low light.  Weight is also an issue.

Not very specific here, but a starting point anyway.

EDIT/  I guess I should have mentioned the .270 and .280 as well as the 30.06/.308, but I think ammo is a bit more because the others are the most used and most available.

Stepping up, I also should have mentioned the .300 Win Mag (along with the 7mm mag), as the higher powered cartridges.

As mentioned below, true military sniper rifles may be .338 Lapua or .50BMG, but these cost a small fortune as do the ammo, and are really way beyond what the avg joe may ever need.

.338 Lapua - Chris Kyle's favorite for long range sniping.  On SEAL team 3 for four deployments to Afghanistan & Iraq, Chris was the most prolific sniper in history - more than the legendary Carlos Hathcock - I'm recalling over 190 kills IIRC. He was recently killed in the range incident by a fellow veteran suffering from PTSD.  Chris wrote American Sniper and founded Craft International.  He made a 2000 meter one-shot kill with this caliber & 25-power scope.  Longest verified sniper kill - over a mile.

One of my sons has a bolt action Tikka in .308. It's the most accurate rifle I've ever personally shot. I put 3 shots into 1.5" at 300 yards with it once from a bench. I stopped there since there was no way my old self was gonna get a 4'th one in there that tight.  ;D

I just bought my first handgun as an FFL. It's an Arcus 98dac. It's a modern day Hi-Power clone but it's double/single action instead of just single action like the Hi-Power.

Finish is mat blue and looks pretty good. The gun is imported and kind of hard to get (supposed to be the current issue to the new Iraq police and military but I didn't check that myself) and was full of oil when I got it and had kind of a gritty trigger. After a through cleaning and a little internal polishing I'm really happy with it. 4.2 lb single action and 12 lb double action trigger pull. Seems pretty accurate and goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Feels like a Hi-Power which is my favorite Browning design but it's got the double action capability and a trigger activated firing-pin safety. So, it's safe to carry hammer down on a loaded chamber and easy to get into action from there.

Only downsides are that it has no hammer drop safety so you have to let the hammer down manually and it's all steel which isn't really a down side depending on what you want to do with it. This makes in a great home, truck, shop gun in my book although maybe a little heavy for carry.

Serk

Here's one of my toys. And this one is purely a toy for me, I just made it for funsies. I made it myself (Nothing like what Fordmano did though, I bought a complete upper and a stripped lower and put all the parts together.) Legally it's a handgun, chambered in .223/5.56. It's actually a fun little bugger to shoot, but because of the extremely short barrel the bullet loses a lot of the .223 high speed punch, it's only really effective out to about 100 yards.

Define "sniper style rifle".

There are rifles and there are rifles used by snipers. If you are a civilian PD sniper then a rifle that works for you is not what you would use as a military sniper.

Interesting Mike, I just did a quick look on line and everybody says they are very good functioning and reliable pistols.  The only complaint I found was that trigger reset after firing was very long.

What I could not find discussed anywhere was whether it has the original Hi Power's magazine disconnect.  I have Hi powers, and have removed the magazine disconnects because it gives a better trigger pull with no other smithing/polishing, and of course I want it to be able to fire even if the mag got dropped in a scuffle.  Now if I was selling it, I would leave it alone (or reinstall it).

Isn't that an 03A3, with new or refinished wood?  And is the scope a period original or copy?  Mine is an all original beauty and a great shooter but iron sights only. Bought it from a dentist at a Great Western gun show at the LA County fairgrounds before they closed them down.  He nearly sanded the original service cartouches out of it, but it looks like a brand new firearm except for the parkerized metal.

Its a 03AFaux (fake 03A4) I put together for the Vintage Sniper matches.

A 03A3 action and bbl with the front sight removed and a scope added.
It is a Weaver period scope, 2.5X fine crosshair, base is a remanufactured Redfield type and the wood is new manufacture that I finished with tung oil.

The 03A3 looks like this with a 5 rnd 200 yd group prone with a sling. First low one was a foul bore.

Not bad for 70 years old.

No not an AMT, is a Fraser, R.B. Industries Ltd in .25auto they are from Fraser Michigan.
I got it probably 10-12 years ago, I was out visiting my sister in Texas and I was trying to hit the pawn shops every trip out that way and pick up some thing unique each trip and I couldn't find anything this trip so my older sister felt bad about me not getting a "prize" so my other sisters son had taken her pistol apart and they couldn't figure to get it back together so sister #1 (first one mentioned) her husband got it and put it back to working order so sister #2 said they could keep it so sister #1 said I could have it to make feel better (yep I am the baby of the family and my oldest sister helped do a lot of my raising she is 10 years older) still mothers me. So now I have it and I have no idea of its actual history so I call it one of my throw away guns. Or JIC (just incase).
It shoots as fine as a .25auto with a 1.3" barrel can shoot it for up close and personal type of work.
I think it's actually 6 or 7 in the mag & 1 in the pipe has a really positive safety so I would feel fine carrying with one in the pipe. But since I don't know it's history I rarely take it anywhere.

I saw no front sight. But nice work on a faux sniper.

My O3A3 looks nearly new, an all matching Smith Corona.  A great shooter.

I also have very nice O3A1 with all machined parts and full stock; Springfield Armory, but with a Remington bolt.   Also a good shooter, but shot very little because of the forward ladder iron sight. I really do enjoy shooting original rifles but with combat rear peep sights... with old eyes.

Like this, but no Unertal scope.  (I do not try to post my own pics, just examples from the net)

I always wanted a good shooting original O3, but never found just the right one.  I used to carry the serial number list of the possibly unsafe/exploding nickel steel  O3s around to gun shows, and ran across a few, which I would not buy.  Never did get a nice 1917 either.  Always looked clunky compared to the O3s, but good shooters anyway (it was good enough for then-Cpl York).

Three of my newer revolvers...... from right to left, .22 9 shot, 9mm 5 shot, .45acp 5 shot (moon clips).
They go well with my Semi-Autos of same caliber.  I do have a S&W Model 10-6 (38) that was my first gun back in the mid 70's, barely used like new in original (cardboard) box.

Your left, or my left?   ;D  (I know which is which) (you fixed it)

I really like .45ACP moon clip revolvers.

1937 Brazilian contract Smith Mod 1917 Hand Ejector (worn and a little loose, and still shoots extremely well)

Smith 625-3 (Model of 1989) (Nframe, Lframe full underlug bbl, round butt)

Smith 625-2 (Model of 1950* with walnut presentation case) (big N-frame, 6.5"bbl, target trigger/hammer, full partridge front sight)

*But the 1950 roll stamp on the bbl was a mistake. It is actually a Model of 1955, produced in the 70s.

I am a fan of caliber interchangeability, and of 45acp.

Actually York really did carry a 03 and not the M17. He was issued a M17 but traded it because he liked the sights on the 03 better and the 03 was what he shot in boot camp. It was stolen when he crossed back over to the US.
His family hosts a flintlock shoot every spring in Pall Mall TN and that info comes from them. I have 2 03's, one is correct, very late 32 action and a very early 33 bbl. Proper scant stock, sights and parts. The other is a MK1 that was rebuilt for the home front in 44. 1919 action, 44 bbl, stamped floorplate and a butt ugly C stock. At 100 it will still do 2 inches with good ammo. Sernos are not that hard, over 800K for a Springfield, and over 288K for RIA, Remington did not make them until later and are all double heat treated. I am still kicking myself for not getting a M17 when they were like 100 bucks and all over the place.

FYI, you can get a higher front sight ("C" blade?) that will put the battle sight (ladder down) dead on at 100 yards. If the A blade is in you can use the ladder or the battle sight is 347 yards with the ladder down.

Nope. No magazine disconnect. I detest them too and got rid of the one on my hi-power also. The Arcus had enough oil packed into it that any place you set it down would become a superfund site. Never seen anything like it. It shot that way just fine but was way more fun to shoot after it was degreased a little.

Huh, all my life I heard Gary Cooper used an 'O3, but York used a '17 to win his MoH.

Good to know on the front sight, I always left the ladder down and did my best, which was not great, and not very often (twice, I think). I much preferred the O3A3.  I have most of the whole collection of little NRA softcover books/pamphlets on US battle rifles..... been awhile since I looked them over.  I've kicked myself too.  Back in the 80s you could find any number of good to excellent condition collectors/shooters for reasonable at huge gun shows.  I could get two rifles, ammo and a pile of slings, strippers, ammo cans, sight covers, yada for $300.  I did get a bunch of stuff, but missed a few, and I am not paying what people are asking today.  Who ever thought they could make a bunch of money buying 30 beat up old M1 carbines?  I always looked for best price of course, but never contemplated selling anything.

Varmintmist

Get a chunk gun, go to Pall Mall, and you can ask his grandson directly.  :cooldude:

30-40 Krags were another. You could find them for 3-400 in great condition in the 80's. Now a decent one that has the faintest cartouche is 800+. Last one I saw was 1300, it was pretty, but I couldn't do it.

Get out on a clear sunny day and try that little peep on the 03. I bet she will impress you. If you roll your own, try a 168gr Sierra Matchking over IMR 4530 at just under 2700fps.

They are real accurate front stuffers that shoot off of a "chunk" of wood as a rest.

Good Krags (unsporterized) always impressed me with their uniqueness, but I was never willing to spend that much for one.

I haven't seen any .223 in a while, locally that is, pricing mat be a factor. finally around here you can get almost any center fire rifle ammo under the sun (at a premium price)

However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

Former Army Ranger's Amazing Off-Hand Shot With .50-Cal Rifle at 1000 Yards

This took place at one of our Texas Triggers spring events. The instruction/explanation footage of the M107 was during the long range portion of the weekend. Ryan's actual shot came at the end of the day after constant urging and egging on by our guests and staff to see him shoot the Barrett off-hand. He agreed to do it, but really didn't want to be filmed. I coaxed him into allowing us to roll tape... Now he's glad I did. – Colby Donaldson

I have been looking all over for a 2" model 15 Smith (face to face in VA only).  Every kind of auto pistol known to man is being listed, bought and sold daily, but it is hard finding old revolvers.  People must be holding on to them.  I love K frames (in blue only).

I too like wheel guns.  The one in the middle is my carry.  five shot .357

Got this in an e-mail this morning from GOA. Seemed like a good place to post this.
It's legit. The ph# is for a poll at Gov. Sandoval's office. I just called and placed my vote for freedom.
Press 1 if your in favor of the Bill - Press 2 if your against the Bill.
Seems a shame that a supposedly "R" Governor would have to conduct a poll to decide where he stands on an issue. I just hope that the voting fine Americans don't outnumber those of us who actually understand what's at stake.

Encourage the Nevada Governor to Veto Gun Control!

Gov. Sandoval is sticking his finger in the wind,
trying to decide whether to issue veto

You don't even have to live in Nevada.

But you should know that Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval (R) is trying to decide whether he should sign or veto SB 221, a bill so extreme that the left-of-center United States Senate even voted down a version of it.

If he signs this Universal Background Check bill, it will have ramifications for you -- even if you don't live in the Silver State.

So please call 775-684-5670 and press "2" -- to vote AGAINST the universal background check bill (SB 221).  You don't have to live in the state.  You don't even have to give your name or address -- the entire process is automated and it will take you less than 13 seconds.

There are many reasons why ALL gun owners from around the country should call.

For starters, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is generating his own calls into the Governor's hotline, encouraging the Sandoval to sign the background (registration) bill.

Mayor "Big Gulp" has posted a video where he encourages people from around the country to cast their votes.

But YOUR VOTE could make the difference!

You may not live in Nevada.  And so you may be thinking, "Why should I take action on an out-of-state bill?"

The reason is that what happens in Nevada wont' stay in Nevada!

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) has been on the fence in regard to universal background checks.  He voted right on a key vote back in April, but we had to put a LOT of pressure on him in the state to get him to do so.

Every vote count that the Left made public had Sen. Heller as a possible pick up for their side.  And that's why we need to keep Nevada from adopting a universal background check bill.  If the Republican Governor signs this bill, it becomes much more likely that this U.S. Senator from Nevada will vote to strap the rest of the country with gun control.

So please call the Governor's hotline number -- no matter where you live!

ACTION.  Call 775-684-5670 and press "2" -- to vote AGAINST the universal background check bill (SB 221).  Again, you don't have to live in the state.  As noted above, you don't even have to give your name or address -- the entire process is automated and it will take you less than 13 seconds.  So no matter where you live, please make this call for the sake of freedom!

Also, please distribute this alert to EVERY PRO-GUN PERSON you know -- your family and friends, even your enemies -- as long as they are pro-gun!  We need to flood this hotline with people pressing "2."

BILL HIGHLIGHTS. There are a lot of problems with SB 221, but these are the key ones for Nevada residents:

* SB 221 would expand background checks -- and hence the framework for gun registration -- to most private gun sales.  Even if you live hundreds of miles from a gun shop, if you want to transfer your gun to your next-door neighbor, you and he have to travel together to the gun shop (even if the buyer holds a concealed carry permit!).

* Under most circumstances, when you and your neighbor travel to the gun shop, he's going to have to get a check with the FBI.  Given that 8% of these checks result in "false denials" -- normally because his name is like someone else's -- you'll have to stick around the gun shop for three days. Most likely, your neighbor will effectively be denied the right to own a firearm.

* Even if you're a purchaser with a CCW, the dealer has to make a 4473 on you -- and, increasingly, ATF is going around to gun shops and copying (a.k.a., registering) that information.

* If you go through the entire Brady Check procedure and it turns out the purchaser of your firearm -- unbeknownst to you (or the Brady System) -- is a marijuana user, you go to prison.

Bottom line:  This is a horrible bill!
Please call 775-684-5670 and press "2."
