oil and filter question

I am looking for a suitable oil and filter substitue away from the honda line now that I live a good distance from any honda shop, thanks for your help.

When you do your search, you might find that I use the Purolator Pure One filters.  Either the PL14612 or the PL14610.  The later is longer (you can use 4 full quarts) but if you use a chrome filter cover, it won't fit over this filter.  The PL14612 is the stock length. 

As for oil, I like the Mobil One V-twin 20-50.

Just to add to the pot, I skimp on the synthetic and use Rotella T-6 in 4 qt. jug from Walmart, then to make up for that, I use an Amsoil chrome filter for safety. I pick up the filters at automotive swap meets I frequent.

Back before walmart quit selling them, I bout 8 of the Supertech filters that work excellent on my 98 standard. they cost me about $2 each and do really well. i run mobil 1 20w 50 synthetic and even changing at 6,000 to 7,000 miles the oil is perfectly clean. check some of my other posts on this one. I cover a lot of your questions on filters.

On that Mobil 1 oil, be sure it does NOT say energy conserving in the API rating circle on the bacl. I also use the Purolater Pure One filter and change at 10,000 miles. 135K and no problems.

Used to go to the parts store, closest was O'Reilly's.

Back in the filter section, they usually have a reference book hanging on a chain.

Find the motorcycle section and then find the one you ride.    Sorry I don't remember the part # right off the top of my head.

I use the longer PL14610 and use an Iron City beer can for my cover. I sand off a little of the rough texture to make it smooth enough that where can fits snug. Try this with the chrome cover.

I spray paint the filter careful to not get any on the gasket.. baby doo yellow really does not go with my black/silver racing strip/chrome.

 Try this site it has been arround for a while. I used the supertech 6607 before they stopped selling them. Now a fram  filter from that site 1773 I think. Tired of paying Honda $19-21 for oil filters, I ordered 12 from Summit Racing. Delivered, to Canada, they worked out to $6. per filter. Champion CL6607 oil filter. I made the purchase due to a post on this board some time ago. Haven't tried one yet, will be changing oil within the week.

i prefer the  PL14612 but will use any filter in a pinch. i tend to change filters at 2000 mi top off the oil and do a full change every 3500 or so. using Mobile 1. have done this since i picked the bike up with 17,000 miles on it.

    I just got off the phone with Purolator and was trying to find a sales distributor for their PureONE filters in the Toronto area...this is what their tech support advised me about their filters:

    1) Purolator PureONE PL14610 oil filter is a automotive oil filter ONLY and is NOT tested OR recommended by them for motorcycle application. They stated that the type of filter paper used is not acceptable for motorcycle engines and also that they have too high a pressure drop.

I guess a lot of cyclist will have to rethink things if they use a Pure One. I for one will use it over a Fram. The same thing has been said about Rotella T6, but that hasn't slowed its use. There Is a lot of  practical experience in the cycle world that says different. FWIW

Well, that settles it then.  It's a darn good thing that I've got a six cylinder car engine in my bike.  

And IMHO, you'd be better off stuffing a roll of toilet paper in a beer can and using that for an oil filter rather than using a Fram oil filter.

Damn.....the price in US dollars is 2.97.....thats a whale of a import/duty tax!!!! They also have the cl7317, they supplied Walmart with the supertech brand of both of these filters......

I use the oversized dia, same length as oem Pure-One PL14459.
but as usual another company is cutting corners the newer pure-one is shorter than the older blue painted one I have in stash.


presently I'm using my last ST3593A that was pushed to the back by the Pure-One stash.

any SS re-useable filter was developed for nascar high rpm racing, endorsed by Smokey for that purpose only. a good street filter should filter btwn 10-15 microns. the smokey oil article was at one time on different websites.

I use Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5w-40 , thanks to the info from this board.
Previously, I was using Amsoil 10-40 Synthetic Oil. 

Also, thanks to this board, I now use a NAPA Oil Fiter #1356.
My chrome cover fits and I can use all 4 quarts of the oil.

Guys, even with the OEM filter you can use all 4 qts. There's enough headroom to accept .10 quarts of extra oil even with heat expansion.

How many miles on your bike Mallett?? If your oil is getting dirty quickly, you probably have some blowby either around the rings or through exhaust valve guides.

pancho, I've got about 48000 miles on my bike...my spark plugs look great & my bike is not using any oil between changes...
