80,000 road miles......what to do maintenance wise?

My 98 standard darkside gal just turned 85,000. Not very much problems since new. I run 20w 50 mobile 1 synthetic. I bought a set of timing belts at 75k but never installed them yet, and almost had hydrolock due to a bad diaphragm...(my quick release of the starter button saved me on that one  :o )
I've also done a desmog on her when i had the diaphragm problems.

♫ ☼  The ole gal just runs too well to go into her.

......course I'm beginning to notice a lil play in the rear. u-joint??? :(
I will probably do some major maintenance this winter and I wanted to begin getting the items i need for it. So I need to know what to start inventorieing. ←is that a word?
♫♪ so any suggestions on some of the things i'll be needing to get for a good tuneup. I'm not talking plugs, filters and such...I replace those regularly. I'm talking about rear end stuff. maybe waterpump. I will certainly replace the belts.
↓§ any suggestions are appreciated.

You could look at the U-joint, but the first thing I would suspect would be the rear wheel dampners. They go before most anything else that causes driveline slack. The rear should be looked at, at every tire change. The u-joint can be removed without a lot of major disassembly. Search the tech page for the method. Other than that, you seem to have everything else covered. OH, I assume you have looked at the vacume tubes and such as that. Check the carb band clamps for tightness/ (there are 18 of the clamps, I think). good luck :cooldude:

Check out the upper shock mounts, cheap easy maintenance item.

Check the pinion cup, the propellor shaft, the shaft oil seal, the thrust washer and O-rings, as mentioned the dampers (replace with 2000 or newer parts), the brake pads, etc.

I'm going into this blindly. I won't go into it till this winter, but I'm getting the components a little at a time while i have the money (probably won't have it in Nov.). Definitely gonna order a set of dampners. How about o-ring, seals, and bearings? Does pinion cup wear quicker than the shaft? I just want to already have everything before i go tearing into it. If I do need any of this, does anyone have a link to get these components?

As Farther said, if yer running the stock shocks, check the upper shock bushings.  When they wear, they can give a 'wallowing' feeling in turns, and you may experience trouble holding a line through turns.  Look at the top shock bolts, and if they are not perfect dead center to the shock mount, they're probably worn.

Cheap, easy fix.

Ok.....I just have to ask..it does not seem that you have been doing a periodic maintenance on the final drive splines nor have you been removing the final drive/rear end and checking the lube in the pinion cup/ drive shaft (no insult intended)....80K miles.....tell us your secret.... :coolsmiley:

Yes, I have been doing maintenance. Everytime i would have the tire replaced, my meka nic would lube the splines. Been running darkside for over 8,000 miles now and not even close to having tire wear.  :cooldude: , but it does now mean that i won't be removing the rear wheel anytime soon. replaced gear oil with synthetic a year ago when i switched to darkside.
